News Progress on Horizons

I believe, from what DB said, that the SRV and its associated gear will need 4 tons of cargo space, so you will need to find room for at least a 4t cargo rack in there somewhere. The PAS is the gear to allow Orbital Cruise and actual planetary landing, I think. Doesn't seem that an Eagle (of either variety) can really handle that and be a good all-round explorer. Flying without shields when you are going to be touching down on planets may not be the best choice!

It is as I feared then :( Have to use my Cobra then. *sigh* Cobra for everything!
Imperial Eagle is just a useless ship. I had hopes I could use it for planetary exploration, but nooooope can't have any of that can we. Who wouldn't want to return after a long exploration trip with your SRV and see that ship on surface..
So what is the Imp Eagle for? Combat? With 'Agile setup', nope, it handles like a brick compared to normal Eagle. 'Shield tankish setup' then, nope, to weak.
As far as I can see the only use an Imperial Eagle has is .. ... uhhhh fast courier/smuggling missions? Sure, but the Cobra is better there to with more cargo space, range and slightly better speed, and just as good handling. Go Cobra! Yey.

OK. I've got to go now.

Hopefully I'll post here tomorrow...

Hi David

It is has been great to see you on 'On the Horizon' doing Q&A sessions and even better seeing you interacting on the forums. I know it is difficult with the 'Internet' to always say what you want without upsetting those that are looking to be upset, but personally I love the when you and other employees of Frontier are so in love with the project that they are prepared to break the PR rules to talk openly about the game in an open and honest manner.

I will always support a developer who is passionate about their product and forgive you for any missed deadlines or features in exchange for an honest and open interaction with the community. It is great to see you here don't be a stranger ;)

BTW my memory is you necked all the champers and owe me a drink ;)

Such a great, racing, attitude, Jynessa :)
You should come out to the race on the 22nd! (Special invite, despite sign-ups being closed)

It looks like he didn't specifically mention racing but the fact that he responded specifically to your question is very reassuring :D

Thank you so much for the invitation - I really want to take part, but I have family commitments on a lot of days, including that one. ;-;

One day, I'd love to try out with the Elite Racers. One day. ;-;

Any chance of a dev blog about the 32/64 bit issue? It's interesting to us devs.

+1, I'd love to read about the various technical details. I hope your code is 64 bit clean, I don't want to hear about crashes caused by DWORD foo = (DWORD)&bar; :)

Hi David, will it be possible to land in a remote location, sent your ship into orbit & drive around in the srv & if you find your way to a starport, could you request your ship to dock at the starport?

Will SRVs require internal compartments, or will they fit inside the Planetary Approach Suite compartment? I'm planning to use an Imperial Eagle for planet exploration(it's just so damn nice looking). Unfortunately there are just 3 internal compartments in this ship, and all will be filled with essential exploration modules(discovery module, surface scanner, and fuel scoop). Right now I can, JUST, make it fit by removing the shields and cargo comparment, but compartment for SRV would ruin the whole thing :p

If i understood right, the Planetary Approach Suite houses the module that allows you to land, which has to be fitted at starports. The SRV or probably SRVs go into the cargo hold at 4 tons each for the initial Scarab SRV.

would totally like to see more heavy ground vessels.

With legs :D well wheels will do too ;)

I hope they don't go the 'chicken walker' route for ground vehicles on airless worlds - it's been done to death by every mech game and NMS.

Tracked/wheeled vehicles, like a grown up version of the tanks in Wild Metal Country, or these 1970s Matchbox 'Adventure 2000' range, would speak the retro-sci-fi design language we have in the ships.

no 32 bit support anymore?
not happy. not happy at all.
oh well :(

Further up the thread:

I hope people realize that they don't need to re-buy Windows in order to get a 64-bit version of it... All they need to do is download a 64-bit version of Windows from Microsoft, make a bootable drive out of it like on a DVD or a USB thumbdrive, then re-install Windows using the key you already have. There are plenty of Youtube videos that can help people unfamiliar with the process.

Phew, so relieved to discover that I have a 64-bit Operating system......though I still think it's high time I upgraded my RAM & Graphics Card ;). Maybe early 2016!

Hi Robert,
thanks m8. But i know from bitter experience that installing an OS over the top is never a good idea.
so its a format and re-install - or a new pc.
sad sad times.
cheers anyway

Having recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, I (fortunately for me) have not had a bad experience in that regard.

I did have a problem with the update for Windows 10 1511 but simply went through the upgrade procedure again and installed 10 over 10 (remembering to use disk cleanup / system files to remove the previous installation and any temporary files) - working like a charm.

David has already stated that for those who cannot upgrade to 64bit will be entitled to a refund for the Horizons update.

The update toward Windows 10/64-bit, is free for the owners of Windows 7/8 / 32/64, no ? Why there should be a problem ?

:)
