Progression / Endgame?

Goal number 1 - to be Elite again - Yes it was a grind but the reward was/will be worth it. This time its going to take years, (too much real life is going to get in the way this time) but courtesy of missions/contracts and injected events much more fun.

Can't wait - bring on first Beta

Goal 1: Try a bit of each role like piracy, trader, explorer etc

Goal 2: Fly all available ships (and paint my sidewinder orange:) )

Goal 3: Fly like a pro like manual landing on various planets, take close ups of interesting objects, fly through the rings of Saturn etc

Goal 4: Visit the places mentioned in the books and special places like where Voyager took the photo of the pale blue dot, mars landings and see stars Sirius or polaris etc

Goal 5: Become Elite in favoured role

Goal 6: Become Elite in another role

Goal 7: Join the Dark Wheel

Goal 8: Meet my named npc and others from the forum

The ultimate goal, enjoy doing this :)

Extended goal survive after dumping radioactives in Slough :)

You make up your own goals and ambitions when you start playing - am sure that there will be a stage when you have to choose between two paths that you want to go down for whatever reason but you obviously cant do both so you pick your route and try to fulfil the other goal later but there will always be something that you want to attempt - you just need to find it

From reading on different forums, it seems that (and I'm not being ageist here - and it's only my opinion ;) ) younger gamers don't want to use their own imagination in games. Modern gamers seem to want a storyline fed to them a little like a movie, where they don't have to make too many choices, just enjoy and be a part of the action as it unfolds.

Sorry, I think that is false. Minecraft, a "somewhat popular" game (especially among younger gamers), is the perfect example of this. No storyline whatsoever. The whole concept in Minecraft is to use your imagination, be creative and do whatever you want.

It has much more to do with what the industry thinks people want and what therefore is available to play rather then what people want themselves.

You may disagree with me, not a problem. But it can't be 'false', it's my opinion. ;)

I do think you make a valid point about Minecraft in particular, but then again I still stand by my observation that I read a lot of stuff from gamers who seem to want a 'career path' to follow, for want of a better expression.

I did write that I think that is false.

In other words...in MY opinion your statement is false. That sentence therefore can't be false..since it's my opinion. ;) :p

I dunno, if a lot of younger gamers are like that it's probably only because they've never had the opportunity for more open game experiences. Big-name games have been dumbed down to triviality for the past 10 or 15 years, with a few notable exceptions such as Minecraft and what have you.

Fair point.

In that case, The Prime Minister is a packet of Cream Crackers.

If this forum teaches us anything, it is that everything is an opinion and nothing is a fact.

Erm... Back to young gamers...

Going by best selling games, CoD, BF etc. young games like FPS. Given the on-rails campaigns on these sorts of games are very short, I assume they really want the online MP aspects of the game. So, MP FPS is the most popular.

Personally, I hate these, just because I don't like being called a noob, by some kid who sounds like he is 11 years old. I'm a miserable old sod after all.

That said, GTA5 sold like hot cakes, that is firmly a sandbox experience, but with many semi-structured missions.

So, in conclusion. Its inconclusive. :D

You can't have true or false opinions, you can believe opinions to be based on true and correct information or based on false or incorrect information. Opinions in themselves are always true.

Besides the point, there will be Thargoids. Something special is planned for them thar critters.

Be afraid.

Very afraid.

IMO both can coexist, take a game like Skyrim, sandbox and almost endless exploration with mission generation but at same time there is a background story that you can chose to pursue or not or start pursuing when ever you feel like it.
I wouldn't mind such a background story in ED, like the hostile invasion by Thargoids (with base locations on planets that you attack, search, plunder) and at the end maybe repel or halt or whatever.
Maybe find ruins (explorable) of another extinct great space faring race and lead to a story to find out what became of them. :D

But there are statements of opinion that are not even wrong.

And then you can be of the opinion that the earth is flat :p

In CoD, BF... the MP games are pretty short, if you lose really badly you can join another lobby, you can also choose not listen to the voice chat...

... squeaky 11 yr olds do my head in too, normally swearing and whining about how I am cheating lol... "watch the replay idiot"

played Ghosts couple of nights ago, against a full of clan of adults!... in the lobby they accused me of cheating, I suggested they watched the replay, one of them had the decency to message me later to say Sorry! Then offered for me to join their clan... ermm "NO!"

When in MP GTAIV I get chased and killed pretty much as soon as I log in, was the same with Red Dead Redemption, because there is no consequence to killing someone... they then pay to become invincible because they don't like it when you do it back!

I am sure that the consequences of killing and death are going to be way more advanced and long term in ED.

Elite: Dangerous is a space sim. It's not an MMORPG. The OP seems a bit genre confused here. You won't get XP, levels, gather healers and tanks and shoot a 20 foot high ship in its ankles.

At the risk of seeming picky, it's not a sim; it's a game. It's an important distinction - not least because of the amount of, um, lively discussion that has taken place over the subject of scientific realism. A sim would put emphasis on such things, but a game doesn't need to worry about it quite so much.
