It's a documented glitch, but if there are indeed alien life forms out there that are into painting large areas, I have a few rooms in my house that also need painting.....

Still not as bad as the one I saw last summer (and wasn't quick enough on the F10 key to catch)....looked like a planet had a docking bay that could hold a coriolis station behind it, then it suddenly disappeared...terrifying at the time, since it COULD be a hollowed out planetoid that was used to store a huge invasion fleet....*puts on the tinfoil hat*

HOWEVER, I like the chocolate idea better. The object might have been left there from the planet Chololatia in the Hershey star system. I understand there may be a rectangular object orbiting over their home world that looks like a giant Mars bar. Their orbiting platform looks like a large Oreo cookie.
Well, at least, that's what I heard from some guy claiming to be from the Ford Galaxy.

That's called a patch. When FD needs to patch up a planet bug, they put a patch on the planet to fix it:
