Proper Rear View like in old Elite or external camera change proposal

Can we simply have a rear view like in old Elite? It really adds to the immersion when flying away from a station or landable base to watch it from the rear. I know we have an external camera view but it's such a "faff" to mess about with it to get it to the rear view I want.

If we can't, I'd be happy if I could set up the existing external camera so it remembers how I've previously set it, voila, rear view solution!

+1 great idea.

A simple key binding with toggle on/off vs hold for it would obviously be a great thing to have.

Used to be useful in combat IIRC.
Interesting to know why it has not be implemented. Is it a technical issue for example.

I would love a 3rd person camera mode for the game. One which actually included some HUD details while following the ship. The current implementation of using Free Camera mode feels very stiff when you start turning as the camera maintains the exact distance and relative position instead of performing a slight rubber-banded follow position.

I like the toggle idea a lot. surly that's just 'Another' Key bind.

although it would be nice if the camera remembered where you left it.. ..that could be a solution too.

I think it would be super neat to have something on the dashboard! Maybe a screen on the lower panel? Maybe part of the helm description being a screen with rear view on it? Doesn’t change combat too much but adds the option. (Too clunky to make combat any different but still effective without addin too much) just my two cents

Save'able camera positions would be great. There are some default ones at the moment, but it'd be good if we could change the camera and save it.

What you see in real life fighter aircraft are little mirrors on the canopy struts. Can we have one or two those perhaps, in ships where they make sense?

I do support the suggestion though - my 21st century car has a reversing camera, but my 33rd century space ship the size of a large office building doesn't.

That's a great idea - it took a while for me to remember the rear view camera and I am too old to faff around with the camera suite. A really neat tutorial for the feak and weeble (me) might help.

Dfference between old elite and current is the fact you as a pilot do not have the faster ship anymore. You could outrun most things in old elite and fire backwards. Even missiles couldn't gain on you that quickly

Isn't the aim now to keep enemy in front of you or jump out. Enemy in your rear only leads to once thing... death.. And now you cannot get away based in your speed alone.

I m not sure we would use it

84 Elite had a choice of 4 full-screen "views". Front, rear, left and right. You could mount a pair of the best weapons in the game (military beam lasers) in all directions. You could pre-press a key (I) to ID the next target that flew through your gunsight then launch missiles, if you bought any. Four seeker missiles, plus eight fixed hardpoints.

84 Elite was one of the first true 3D games for the home computer. Pioneering, highly advanced for it's time and yet 'primitive' due to the hardware limitations of machines with S-Cargo processors and less memory than your average goldfish. Technology made the H-Jump but not all network 'nodes' are equally equipped to cope with the updates.

Now, we have a "gunna" seat that could fire missiles and turrets at pursuers, if doing so won't slice off part of our own tail, but there's a catch. A 'volunteer' has to sit in that seat instead of flying their own ship. Despite multi-million CR salaries, our NPC employees refuse to do anything but fly fighters and sit around getting filthy rich in the crew lounge?

+1 for a 'rear-view' via the Helm / Fighters / SRV / Crew [Galnet video] panel.

+6 for staff training programs. Don't wealthy virtual couch potatoes get bored?

I'd like to have a rear-view-mirror type display, rather than external camera options, because I'd want to remain in the cockpit during landing/takeoff. The display could be only available during docking and landing, even.

That's really the main reason I'd want the feature -- to keep track of the crazy NPCs inside and around stations when I'm landing or docking. :) Those guys can't fly worth beans.

Ah ok, now we need one that points straight up as well for lift off in stations :p
