Proper VR settings for gtx 1080? X Flight Hotas help

Backed this in 2014.... Just getting back into it.
Got an Oculus Rift, running gtx 1080 and played around with supersampling with the oculus tray tool. Then started playing around with in game graphics settings and became overwhelmed, It would take a whole day of fiddling with settings while checking fps to get things set right.
Surely there has to be a guide or link to universal settings alot of people with a gtx 1080 and VR are using? Any help here?

Also.... Ordered a thrustmaster x flight hotas setup. Are there any control binding guides or anything for this throttle and stick?

Thanks

I can give you my settings when i get home which is about as good as its going to get with a 1080 imo.

For now though i'd download a program called "Dr. Kaii EDProfiler". Exceedingly usefull tool for toying around with your ED settings as you can do it on the fly and save profiles. So at home i have a regular setting for playing on a 1080p screen, then a VR setting for my vive.

I have SS on X1.0 and HMD Quality on X1.5. Both using the in-game graphics settings, I don't use the debug or tray tool. Then I have Shadows, Environment Quality and Terrain Quality all on Ultra and everything else on High. With that I get smooth gameplay, pretty much zero stuttering and sharp enough for me. :)

Ive been reading for hours and all the different supersampling options is what I dont get. You have ED SS, steam vr SS, steam VR beta SS, Chaperone tool, OVR tool, these are all different ways to set supersampling.... not mentioned is the oculus tray tool supersampling which is the tool I currently am using.
Then you have HMD settings.
Ive read posts where people say to run VR low graphic preset and crank SS to 2.0, Ive read other posts that say keep SS at 1.0 and crank HMD up to 2.0.
Then I find these settings which are suppossed to be great https://imgur.com/7gyVV8q

But everybody suggests something completely different.
I know nobody can tell me what to set my settings at for my machine, Im just looking for an up to date guide explaining all the different SS options and tools and what settings are critical for VR etc.

Another thing Im lost on.... Are people using ASW?
Then I guess steam has there own version of ASW.

is it better to leave ASW off and let the hardware do its job with medium settings, or crank everything to ultra and ss up high and let ASW software kick in?

I'm also using a 1080 (although processor and RAM can make a difference too). Basically, you will end up setting it as high as you can go without starting to get very poor frame rate / stuttering, so to an extent it's a bit of trial and error. I continue to play around with my graphics settings, and the ones I put above work for me. I've read people using less powerful GPU's putting SS way up, but if I try that on my setup I get unacceptable stutter in stations and on planet surfaces.

As I said, the above works for me. Previously I had SS at x0.85 and HMD Quality at X1.75, that was also smooth.

ASW will probably kick in anyway in stations and on planets. It's not particularly noticeable, so unless you get some jarring effects I wouldn't worry about it. I can't say about steam, but the Oculus software has ASW on by default.

I have just reformatted, my PC was lagging and after a previous post where I stated I was getting awful performance when I popped on my rift and seeing others were getting better performance with a lower spec PC I decided to pop a Samsung EVO 960 M.2 SSD in to see if that would help. Well the PC is faster yes, but if I now try playing ED on the Rift it just gives me the spinning loading circle and tell me that ED is having problems or whatever the message it gives to say "it no worky". Everything is the same as before regarding Oculus software but now it wont work. Unknown sources button is set to allow, I have tried starting ED and popping the Rift on and popping the Rift on and then starting ED, none work.

I use a 1080 with CV1, when I boot up the rift, I set graphics to VR high and 1.5x SS, no glitches, no issues, all perfect.

Your hard disk has no bearing on ED performance (except how long you see loading screens) or functionality in any way shape or form. If ED is having trouble starting after changing a hard drive, then the hard drive is faulty or the installation somehow corrupt. For future ref, if playing games on the monitor is fine, but laggy in the rift, it is either a settings issue of the game, the rift, or the PC, or a driver issue.

The HD was purely so I could have Win10, any relative software needed, Elite, Oculus Software and maybe a few other games installed. The old SSD is so I can have more stuff installed at one time instead of having to delete all the time. My older one could manage Win10, Elite, Oculus software and that had to be uninstalled if I wanted to play CoD WWII (zombies with my brother).

And it not laggy on the Rift playing Elite, it never even loads up like I already typed. Elite wont even get going.

Edit:  I hadn't gone through the activation process. LOL!! My excuse is I had a mental night shift and I was tired after being awake for 22 hours. Its a perfectly valid excuse and I'm willing to stick to it.

Also try various Nvidia drivers, am running the CV1 with a 1080TI, pretty much everything on ultra & 1.0 HMD, 1.5 SS. Rock solid 90 FPS, it was the driver that made a huge difference, the performance between drivers can be huge, latest driver is not always best. Am running a slightly older driver, away from home but I can find out the driver version later this week.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I get my third rift sensor and hotas tomorrow. Hopefully will have time to get it setup and play around with it this weekend.

How are you guys checking fps in steamvr?

If anyone else dont mind posting there gtx1080 vr settings....i would appreciate it. I can get a good feel what everyone is running and have a basis to test my settings.

Why a third sensor may I ask?

Why a third sensor may I ask?

Not specific to ED.... other games I have I loose touch controller tracking when turned away from my desk. Its just that the sensor shipped along with the hotas from amazon so mentioned it even though i didnt need to lol.

Got third sensor installed, got t flight hotas x and pretty impressed with it compared to old saitek cyborg i have.

Didnt get chance to use it though. Ive been fighting displayport issues with my gtx 1080 founders card and my lg ultrawide. After running the rift my monitor looses signal alot of the time.
It ran fine on hdmi but now my rift is on the only hdmi port so have to run monitor on displayport with hdmi to DP adapter and its causing me alot of issues.

Ive read about alot of people having similar issues with early 1070/1080 cards but not sure if there was ever a firmware release that solved the issue or not.
Might have to just sell the rift and go back to flatscreening it :(

So.....

Reading more about cables, hdmi, and displayport specs.... it looks like the hdmi to displayport cable i bought only supports resolutions up to 1920x1200.
My monitor is 2560x1080.
So maybe the cable isnt supplying the signal needed and creating the issues.

Am I better off putting the rift on a displayport with known and approved hdmi to displayport adapter, and keeping my ultrawide monitor on its native hdmi connection to my 1080?

Should i try this?

My Pny gtx1080 has only 1 hdmi out, 1 dvi out, and 3 displayports.
My LG 2650x1080 ultrawide has only hdmi inputs.

I gave my rift the hdmi slot on the 1080 and used a hdmi to displayport adapter I had on my monitor but had issues with the screen turning blue after taking rift off, and extended time where monitor was black logging into windows or coming out of sleep. Sometimes a reset would straighten it out but monitor was being fed 90Hz instead of 60Hz.
Started to think my 1080 was bad but it worked flawless before messing with adapters and stuff to run the rift.
I ordered a hdmi to displayport cable from gatorcables and having same problems as above. I checked the specs and says supports up to 1920x1200 so I dont think its carrying the signal I need for 2650x1080.

So I guess I will try it one more time before I just sell my rift and go back to flatscreen gaming.
I need to make sure I get correct adapter and right option this time.

My monitor is 2650x1080 and sofar 2 different adapters dont work right with it. So should I just keep my monitor on my 1080's hdmi and get the cablematters 4k hdmi to displayport for the rift?

I also have a dvi port on the 1080, would a dvi to hdmi be able to feed the signal my monitor needs or do i need a special 1.4 or 4k dvi to hdmi adapter?

Any suggestions?

On the VIVE here but personally I find the vanilla in-game VR Ultra settings fine as-is.

Used those settings on both my previous 980 Ti and my current 1080 Ti. As a general rule of thumb, I would just take the factory/game defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Where NVidia settings are concerned my personal global default preference changes from the defaults are:-
  1. Ambient Occlusion: Quality
  2. Antialiasing - FXAA: On
  3. DSR - Factors: All enabled (disabled by default)
  4. DSR - Smoothness: 33% (probably default setting)
  5. Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA): On
  6. Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance
  7. Triple buffering: On

Not sure how many of these settings have an effect on the VR but I would bet the DSR settings are moot.
