PS4 Controller setup advice and FA off issues

Hi All,

So this is my first ever post on the Elite forums. I previously played on PC with Hotas and voice attack when the game came out and stopped playing a while back due to other commitments. I just purchased the game on PS4 and have to admit I am surprised how good it is. The only issue I am having is the PS4 controller and finding a setup that allows me to use yaw and thrusters in combat at the same time, which is proving tricky. TBH I still haven't got my head around flight assist off either which is driving me insane, I simply cannot control the ship when its turned off.

So which settup do you use using the controller and what has your experience been of using FA off on the PS4?

Thanks for reading :)

I would also love to read about tweaks and adjustments for the PS4 control settings.

I have rebound some settings from defaults.

Pitch and Roll on Right thumb stick - so it feels more like a flight joystick.

Yaw on left thumb stick, and vertical thrust on left thumbstick as well. The vertical thrust adds an edge in dogfighting vs NPC.

Alternate controls I have vertical and horizontal thrust on left thumb stick - use this to fine tune landing.

Changed R3 to be Flight assist Off/On as again in combat this is much quicker to flick between.

Throttle on R1 & L1 I have set to incremental 12.5% and full range so you can stop on landing quickly and in combat quickly go from ahead to reverse.

These minor changes have kept me from buying a HOTAS for PS4, as I have a decent one on PC and can't justify a 2nd one!

I've found it's easy enough to switch between the two preset fight modes on the fly using L3 to switch between yaw and L/R thrusters.

Yes this ^^. The default controller setup is perfect, just click in left thumbstick (L3) to switch between lateral thrusters and yaw. I have not needed to change anything yet and the long press button prompts are a great feature.

Use landing override instead of alternate flight mode, this frees up your left stick for FA

Basically, barely anyone flies around with FA off. most people just use it to turn turn faster in combat
