PS4 Elite Dangerous - The unanswered questions

Dear Lloyd, Brett and Ed. :)

I have basically gone through the questions which were raised on here and removed all the answered ones, in the FAQ which leaves a much smaller list but still a few questions.

Lloyd is it possible to address these separately or add them to the FAQ

Gameplay

G1 - On the 27th of June, will the PS4 game servers be up and running from 00:00 GMT? Will there be a day-one patch? Will the 2.3.10 update be part of the Digital Download? Or separate? In short: when will we actually be able to start playing?

[Edit - This was touched on very slightly, but not definitely answered, the placeholder said 16:00 UTC but that was dismissed and then it wasn't really clear what FDevs plan was apart from accounts could be set up and training missions played from midnight local times]

G9 - Will it be possible for the context UI menu to include also R2 and L2 (and not just R1 and L1)?

[Edit - I raised this elsewhere so copied here for clarity

Is there any reason why these have not had L2 and R2 (Triggers) added as you can bind them for shift commands also, just like the d-pad and the L1 and R1 (Bumpers). It would be good to know if I have Chaff or SCB bound to X + R2 and X + L2 for example until I have memorised it all. The game is hard enough but having these prompts early would be very useful. Small things. :)]

Tech

T1 - What learning points have Frontier gained from their previous deployments on the Xbox consoles? Where there notable differences between the architecture of the two consoles? Is there anything that we can do to help during the early days after the servers will go live?

T2 - What is the expected target framerate for PS4 and for PS4 Pro, respectively? Will these be locked or variable (for ex., 60 in space but 30 on planets)?

[Edit - this was skimmed over really and not really discussed in much detail. Could an answer be expanded on. Lloyd basically said its difficult to do comparisons, but the development team must have had aims and goals with respect to performance.]

HOTAS/Controller

H5 - Can we save controller bindings (as separate files) to USB and/or to PSN-cloud? Do/can we get multiple named config saves for controller bindings?

PSN Ecosystem Integration

P2 - Why are EU players not receiving the ED avatars as a preorder bonus (like US players do)? We've been told it is some kind of legal reason?

P4 - Will you implement PSN "players met"?

[Edit - this was answered "This won’t be available at launch but it’s something we are aware of.". Could the history tab like the PC version be introduced in the interim?]

Extra

X5 - Roughly, how many FDev full time staff members (or aggregated equivalent if shared resources) are (or have been) dedicated to the PS4 conversion? And how many of those will still be dedicated to PS4-related matters in a few months post launch?

I think that was all that was missed, if anyone wants to add anything just post in the thread. Hopefully Lloyd will respond being the nice chap he seems to be o7.

Thanks

It sounded like they didn't want to commit to a time as they don't really know tbh. They did confirm a day one patch would be needed and they don't know what time Sony will release it which is why I think they were hesitant to give a firm time.

I think four pm UTC is probably a realistic time as all formats are being updated so the servers will be down anyway.

T2 was one of my questions (though perhaps others asked as well). I feel like it was answered, if somewhat indirectly. Lloyd basically states that framerates vary depending on demand (10 Anaconda's vs open space), and he also mentioned that in open space there was little difference between the performance and enhanced graphics settings on the Pro, which implies that open space FPS is "fast" compared to planets, rings, or entire fleets of ships.

This mirrors what I've seen in PC demo. So long story short, I expect a variable framerate of at least 30 fps, based on watching video, up to 60 fps in open space. There's no reason to go above 60 fps because that's the typical refresh rate of TVs & monitors.

Yeh, I do see where he is coming from but we did see press articles on the Xbox one which gave hard numbers, I of course understand its a target and with 10 ships on screen that goes out the window.

Ironically, you can switch on the FPS numbers on PC, but not, AFAIK, on XBox or PS4 so there's no way of checking. Did you see the mock ups of the FPS display on the Scorpio? I see that got dropped...

But does it look good? Sometimes people get all wrapped up in FPS and miss the forest through the trees. Most sci-fi movies we watch look amazing at 24 FPS, LOL. Don't get me wrong, I love my 60 FPS games, but number alone don't tell the entire story. My favorite is the comment like, "I've got 92.5 FPS, OMG OMG OMG!!!!!" on a 60 Hz monitor / TV. [wacko]

It looked pretty smooth to me, but DF are the dogs danglies when it comes to graphics analysis, both FPS and quality and effects etc etc.

Yep I'm with you. Don't care. Am I enjoying myself? All good. We don't need to go through the whole 'when I was a lad' do we?

Hi everyone,

I've added some details to the questions I'm currently able to answer below.

Gameplay

G1 - On the 27th of June, will the PS4 game servers be up and running from 00:00 GMT? Will there be a day-one patch? Will the 2.3.10 update be part of the Digital Download? Or separate? In short: when will we actually be able to start playing?

The game will launch on the store at midnight allowing you to link your PSN and Frontier accounts and play Training Missions. Access to the full game will depend on when our server update for 2.3.10 goes live; we will have further information on the timing for this closer to release.

G9 - Will it be possible for the context UI menu to include also R2 and L2 (and not just R1 and L1)?

We don't currently have any plans for this on PlayStation 4, it's an interesting idea though. I'm not sure off the top of my head if there are technical limitations with this one.

Tech

T1 - What learning points have Frontier gained from their previous deployments on the Xbox consoles? Where there notable differences between the architecture of the two consoles? Is there anything that we can do to help during the early days after the servers will go live?

I wasn't around during the Xbox launch time so can't comment on learning points but the best thing you can do to help during the early days is to be patient! Launching a game is a hugely complicated process (but you all already knew that :p)

T2 - What is the expected target framerate for PS4 and for PS4 Pro, respectively? Will these be locked or variable (for ex., 60 in space but 30 on planets)?

They are variable on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro in both Performance & Quality modes. Our targets were to make the game play as well as possible in all areas!

HOTAS/Controller

H5 - Can we save controller bindings (as separate files) to USB and/or to PSN-cloud? Do/can we get multiple named config saves for controller bindings?

Unfortunately controller bindings can't be saved individually.

One question I've got and couldn't find an answer for:

Will the PS4 version run at 60FPS? If so, is this restricted to the PS4 Pro?

Another unanswered question is how much hard drive space is required for the disc and digital versions. The digital version on the psn store shows 13.9 Gb. Will the disc version have the same size as the digital? I'm getting the disc version and my hard drive is getting full.

I've just pre-ordered. Game asks for 13.9GB, but this is just for the base game.

You install the game from the disc anyway, so you'd still need the space. I believe it will be bigger than that though, that's probably just for the base version of ED.

I'm planning on upgrading my HDD at some point, it'll be £80 well spent, imo.
