PS4 to PS4 pro upgrade

Hi there,

I am thinking about upgrading to PS4 Pro together with a new TV. I am wondering now if a) is the change worth the quality increase in ED? (aside from the new TV) b) is there any chance that I, if logged in with the same Gamertag, can use the same Commander with the same amount of Credits and Ships on the new PS4 Pro? Or do I really have to create a new Cmdr and thus start from scratch? I currently own 1billion and some very cool ships that I don't want to give up if somehow possible.

Thanks for your help!

Hi There

I upgraded to a pro specifically for ED when it was released and haven’t regretted it one bit. Quality mode is great for planets and stations.

As for the save - all of your commander data is held on the frontier servers so as long as you login with the same PSN ID and frontier account all will be good. The local ED save on you PS4 is for your keybindings/options etc... so just make a backup of that too and reload it onto your Pro and all will be as before.

Outstanding! Thank you very much madmattnz for that swift reply.

This was perhaps not the best analysis DF ever made, but it's good to give you an idea

However, consider this. The Pro does improve quality settings and performance, on average. But it's far from the large leap you see in other games. It still has a number of graphical bugs, and offers nothing more than the regular 1080p resolution. So for example, no advantage in having a 4K TV with Elite.

Yes, although its more worth it for other games, Elite Dangerous does benefit, just not as much as other games with improved resolution.

I elected not to upgrade my PS4 Slim to a PS4 Pro, but I'm an edge-case (for example, I need to worry about things like power consumption). If you are on an original PS4, then I definitely do recommend upgrading to a Pro. If you just bought a new Slim, then perhaps you can get a good value on a trade-in, or just sell the Slim to recoup some of the cost of the Pro.

If you don't have Red Dead Redemption 2 yet, and the game interests you, then I'd recommend getting the RDR2 PS4 Pro bundle, as this version of the Pro is the newest, and thus it's noticeably quieter than older versions of the Pro.

All that said, Frontier still needs to get their act together when it comes to the graphics quality on PS4. ED should look good on PS4 Slim and support some version of 4K on PS4 Pro. Don't let them off the hook regardless what you decide!

The bundle with RDR2 I've seen too. I already own it on Xbox One Standard though. Got you, my edge position incorporates worrying about bills...but since my standard PS4 is turning 4 or 5 yrs now I thought that the initial costs are long amortized.

Thanks to all of you for the support - really appreciate.

Out of curiosity, what made you choose to get ED for PS4 but RDR2 on XBox? I've read ED looks better on XBox (at least shadows) and RDR2 looks better on PS4...

fair question. My girlfriend gifted me RDR2 but she bought it for the wrong console. I used it as a reason to buy a second hand Xbox One.

Hello I just upgraded from the launch ps4 to the pro and bought a new tv as well. Money well spent I bought a TCL 4k hdr tv and it works awesome on the pro just make sure your new tv has 2.0 or better hdmi port or it wont upcale very well and hdr requires 2.0 for the extra bandwith enjoy. o7
