Hail: "Understanding the Griefer: Piracy and You"

"Greetings fellow CMDRs!

For those unfamiliar, allow me to introduce myself: My name is CMDR _Fissure; Imperial Naval Officer, full-time freelance griefer hunter, part-time look at pretty things and take pictures, and a formally commissioned privateer in the Imperial Naval Auxiliary. I am what some might call a Gentleman Pirate . If our paths ever cross, know that I avoid firing upon my targets at all costs, and do my best to make the experience enjoyable for all parties involved in our transaction. Over the course of my pirating career I've held jolly conversions, told many a terrible joke, and made a number of friends that I fly with to this day. Oddly enough, piracy is one of the fundamental career paths in our galaxy alongside bounty hunting, trading, and exploration. In fact, piracy is so central a part of our galaxy that even ships piloted by Artificial Intelligence engage in it! (yes, AI still exists. You didn't think that the ban would get rid of it, did you?). As such, there can be a reasonable expectation that piracy can and will occur while visiting well populated systems and shipping lanes. Speaking honestly, I've had some of my best experiences as a CMDR while pirating, and more often than not both parties leave the engagement having had an enjoyable time ( Click here for pictures, stories, and good feels )

That being said, piracy encounters are indeed high-stress situations, and the safety of all involved is reliant upon the understanding and use of a common language. Understanding words and phrases such as "throttle down," "submit," "you are free to go," and "you'll never take me alive, ya dirty feds!" is central to your ability to leave a pirate encounter unscathed. Miscommunication can often lead to undesirable outcomes. For example:

Griefer: : "a person who harasses or deliberately provokes other players or members in order to spoil their enjoyment."

I cannot speak for others, but I for one do not engage in piracy to deliberately harass or provoke others. I do it for the unpredictable and meaningful CMDR-to-CMDR interaction, as well as for the honor of the Empress! (May we bask in her glory). To avoid any future miscommunication, let it be clear that engaging in an activity designed, implicated, and promoted by FD (the Formidine Deity, who rules justly, if not often incompetently, over our galaxy) does not constitute "griefing."

I have attached an example of CMDR-to-CMDR miscommunication (and poor manners) to this transmission. Please study it to ensure similar mistakes are not made during future state-sanctioned piracy encounters.

Thank you for your time. Fly safe, CMDRS! o7"

Report player for swearing. Doesn't belong in the game imho.
Personally I'd have let him know that you are killing him because he isn't civil then blown him up and reported him.

Thank you for being the "true" pirate that this game needs and I look forward to being pirated by you some day... If you catch me first ;)

I always break for pirates. Even when I'm not carrying cargo. Just explain that I'm dry and let them scan me to prove it. The closest I've come to being killed by pirates was when two gentlemen in a wing pulled me out of supercruise while I was on a rare trade run. I offered to dump cargo but they never once attempted to communicate with me. After a few minutes of me pleading for my life and offering a deal they opened fire ... and I opened my cargo hold. They left me for dead and I survived thanks to a reboot/repair.

he didn't combat log, you have to give him that.

Oh yeah! I agree. Nothing is as rude as a CLogger.

Good effort, a credit to your profession Cmdr!

+1

Did you say "state sponsored"?

If so then you are not really a pirate, I think this makes you a "Privateer"!

Wow you had a LOT of patience  i wish there would be more pirates like you out there. This is what i call fun but this reaction.....i can't understand it. Don't give up! We need more pirates like you!

Here's the thing, though.Telling people you're not a griefer does nothing to prove that you're not a griefer. Anyone who's had a bad experience isn't going to just take your word for it and pull over simply because you're being polite about mugging them.

Piracy is theft.

Remember some commanders would rather die than give a mealy mouthed, penny pinching, persimmonous pirate one tonne of their cargo.

Heck if that was me the commas would be. A bit bluer than "duck" and "go fly yourself".

I don't know what you are complaining about, they didn't log, they gave you grief and they went down with their ship. You got a bounty and no cargo, he escaped in his pod to the insurance claim lobby, smug in the knowledge that another pirate family will starve tonight.

Sooner we wipe the pirate scum from that system the better!

I can get preferring to die than hand over cargo. It's kind of interesting to think that all he had to do was roleplay a bit and he could have had the same outcome for the same reasons, without making it a worse experience both him and you.

At least I'm assuming that real pirates wouldn't mind a bit of "You'll never take me alive, ruffian!" type banter.

That guy was absolutely right to curse you out, it's pretty obvious you're only doing "piracy" so you can get off on what little power you held over him. If that wasn't the case, you wouldn't be gloating on the forums about it afterwards, would you?

So if you attack me in game I have a right to say whatever I want to you? I disagree. Thats why report for abusive behaviour exists in the game.

Elite is remarkably civil compared to other games, especially some of the online shooter variants with voice chat. I'd prefer if it was kept that way tbh. Swearing works in some games but not in Elite imho

Last time I had one of those encounters I self destructed to deprive them of the kill and cargo.

No griefing is by all counts is deplorable, but "genuine pirating" is also dispicable. (maybe not on the same level).
