PSA: VR works in the Odyssey Vanity Cam

Here's a vid of some quick messing about with it:

It's obviously not meant for outright gameplay, but it's still fun to charge about in. Can operate your basic weapons and tools, throw grenades etc, but without interactions or a target reticule it's not really practical for any of that as such.

With a bit of tinkering with the camera position I'd guess you could probably fudge a form of first person here, for exploration at least. (At points when I was edging around on rooftops checking for scavengers I could almost believe I was doing it in first person. But then my avatar would run into a wall out of sight ;))

Frame rate was totally comfortable for me, although I was reprojecting obviously at points for sure. Was running it on the standard High defaults at the time (not VR defaults) on this kit:
1080, i7 4790K, 16gb ram

Neat-o! I usually play ED in VR, but I have been playing Odyssey in pancake. Tomorrow, I will have to get my VR headset out and try this! Thank you for sharing this info with us, CMDR Golgot! o7

Just spent an hour with it - nice find! 👍

Performance is slightly worse for me in 3D (GTX 1080 + i7 8700, Rift S, mostly High settings) and I’m definitely in ASW, but it’s still fun to run around set at the Right Shoulder cam for a Mass Effect style experience.

The “dust clouds” and other smoke effects that can be seen occasionally on the planet surfaces suffer from head movement Force powers though 😅

Managed to get a very rustic form of 'first person' going:

You can manoeuvre yourself into a kind of first person position in the Odyssey cam. (For some reason the actual free cam doesn't seem to work on foot or in ship for me).

If you're very good at hip firing without a reticule (I'm not ;)) you could maybe actually play a bit like this. Especially with a few more key binds. I could only shoot, reload and throw grenades here, but changing weapon should be possible for example.

You still wouldn't be able to interact with any panels or pick up items etc, AFAIK. But it's fun to mess around with for now ;)

Nice!

edit - no it's excellent! What are FD worried about???

A bit OT but I remember using the VR vanity cam on my sidewinder when it first came out.
I plonked the camera on the ground and I used my controller (set up to how I have my cheap quadcoptor). It felt... like I was controlling a large quadcopter!
Pretty cool!

I agree - I’ve just had another good low-G leaping session and legging it around for a bit, and I’d say comfort-wise that the SRV turret view is worse than the feet vanity cam. Like, much worse.

I’ve found the Commander Right Profile view works best for me - I can walk into it and turn around, and I’m almost perfectly positioned. Looking down, I can see my feet leaving footprints which is the best thing 😅

OK, its working.

For a god sake, this 2d reprojection is poor idea and worst VR implementation i ever saw.

UPDATE:
I have shared my feedback about current implementation:

UPDATE2:
I just ran VR on the free camera, and played from the cmdr shoulder, its simply AMAZING in comparison to 2D reprojection.
on free-camera i can touch the Elite world, 2D reprojection is totally KILLING the immersion.

Guys, i just cant imagine how this decision was made. Its unbelievable downgrade of VR flagship game.

Frontier... WHYYYYY? 2D reprojection could be only as option for low-performance machines, not mandatory VR set.

Thanks for this, for just romping about on the surface this is fantastic - although my performance takes a big hit, this is infinitely better than the 2d screen thing

Trying this, but having scaling issues (my commander is huge). Mind I'm going from sitting to standing up, maybe I need to reset my VR position in SteamVR ?
Any suggestions, comments ? :)

My procedure is to stand up when I’m in the virtual flatscreen, reset my view (using ED’s reset view key - default is f12) while ducking about 2 inches, then selecting the camera suite “Commander Right Profile” view. Stepping forward into my avatar allows me to be almost exactly matched. Without the little duck while resetting my view, I end up just a little too offset due to the camera view height.

Fantastic, will give it a crack

Great video. Really shows how embarrassing the 2D screen looks for FD. Sorry devs - I don't mean to denounce the awesome work you've done on the alpha so far.

Neither am I meaning to denounce, just needs to be repeatedly highlighted, I really can't see any reason why, apart from effort from Frontier :)
And it's only an alpha, beta next ;-)

Recorded this, not flash, just hoping like hell that Frontier will add proper on-foot VR soon after launch :)

Elite Dangerous Odyssey: Alpha Phase 3 - Day 2.
A pseudo on-foot VR :) experiment, and sampling Lifeforms.

If you flick through the various CMDR views, then “Commander Right Profile” is only two paces away from being stepped into. I find if I duck about 2” and then recenter my view while in the virtual flatscreen, then it’s almost perfect when I align myself with the avatar. Great for walking backwards and looking at the boots leaving footsteps 😁

With the news that FDev are getting rid of the spinny-wheel mini game, it looks like Exobiologist in full VR just got a bit more viable.

Yeh, not sure what you mean by "Commander Right Profile" is one of the keypad # set cams?

Exactly that - when you go into the camera suite you can flick through the various views.

“Right Shoulder” is great for Mass Effect-style third person, or “Right Profile” is good for stepping into.
