PSA: You can criticize something you also enjoy.

The Devs are on a hiding to nothing, IMHO. I posted in another of these interminable threads that no matter what they do, a section of the forum will shoot them down in flames as development x doesn't scratch their cr/ton/hr - pew-pew - use your imagination itch (delete as appropriate).

My perception is that massive griping is making the dev list play whack-a-mole to try to implement things out of order instead of ignoring the forums to a great extent except for bug fixing / stabilizing v1.0. There is little constructive criticism and the griefer / carebear / fanboi loops soon take over anything even approaching debate.

Content is king and again, in another thread I did a list of the top of my head that would add "interesting" kinks such as a nest of NPC Pirates actually using those bases that fly the Pirate Skull hologram, but that would hack off the cr/ton/hr crowd as their fragile treasure boxes would be attacked more often than they'd like.

So there's just lose / lose for FD. Even if they presented an entire games worth of content in v1.3, say, the first threads here would be "why didn't you do this in v1.0 or 1.1 or 1.2!" or "I still can't super-cruise for 9 hours instead of jumping between systems" or some other silly thing that becomes a monomaniacal fixture in someone's mind.

The soapbox is free, next contestant please. :)

Since this forum is filled with people who try and deflect any criticism of the game by saying "You don't get it" i feel someone needs to state something most 6 year olds have figured out:
(SNIP)
Heres the bottom line: if you actually love this game - and aren't just someone that has to justify ever purchase they commit to by pretending its the best thing ever - you will be able to discuss and see its flaws and shortcomings.

You can criticize something you like. However I would suggest that comparing other players to 6 year olds and implying that their arguments are only attempts to justify a purchase is not going to get you very far in the "friendly and constructive criticism" department.

I can characterize the people criticizing the game in exactly the same way and apparently you're not too pleased about that.

You can criticize something without disliking it, and even if you do dislike it that doesn't preclude you from making a valid point. Additionally you can have a stance on something or posit a question without it being "whinging" or without even really having a vested interest in the outcome of a poll. You can play devil's advocate for the sake of good conversation!

Unfortunately there are some around here who take any criticism of the game or any expression of disappointment in it as an attack on the game and on themselves by extension. Totally innocuous questions are met with hostile and sarky remarks, valid points are met with cries of "Clear off back to your pew pew, you don't get it" implicitly suggesting, or more often explicitly stating, that you're a cretin whose feeble little mind can't grasp the complexity of the intellectual behemoth of a game before him.

I don't really get the attitudes, it kind of stifles conversation a bit.

Anyways, the sincerest form of patriotism is dissent, right?

Pretty much my experience here too.

Criticizing something doesn't mean you hate it or its bad. Criticizing things is how things are improved. Adults who have rational minds can enjoy something while realizing it has room for improvement.

Many people on this forum - such as myself - love Elite Dangerous and are happy it has made it this far. However we are entirely capable of admitting that the game has failed to pull some things off and has some areas where it needs some significant improvement.

Heres the bottom line: if you actually love this game - and aren't just someone that has to justify ever purchase they commit to by pretending its the best thing ever - you will be able to discuss and see its flaws and shortcomings.

Wholly agree.....I love the game but it still needs a lot of work and extending. What we have is a basic implementation so far, maybe a small amount more.

A decent base to work from though.

Constructive criticism is welcome on this forum and always has been (from my experience). What is not welcome is when OPs approach topics/general observations from an aggressive stance.

It always ends badly (or doesn't end at all)

Explain then the huge amount of posts with constructive criticism or even innocent questions from new players being utterly derailed and trolled by senior forum members who claim to be original funders/supporters?

Yes this forum is entirely mature and its only the dirty people such as myself that are the problem. Of course.

/eyeroll-drive engaged.

Ah yes - I forgot to add 'hyperbole' as well as 'aggressive'

Constructive criticism and innocent questions are not the posts which receive negative responses though, generally, although there are all manner of responses from all manner of people

the problem is that a huge number of threads are just repeat-trollfests that don't add anything constructive. They simply aim to tear down, to diminish.

You ask if people like you are the problem and I'd say Yes when you start a thread like this:

constructive? No, serious? No, takes the debate forward? No

Another issue i struggle with in all these threads is that they move on so blooming fast and i have to wade through 27 pages of stuff in order to get up to speed with the arguments before making my small contribution which inevitably gets completely overlooked and ignored. A lot of people make some excellent posts and they just disappear into the ether...

Totally agree, that said, there's a massive difference between being constructive in your criticism or not, being constructive is useful, just complaining, not so much.

Holy Moly! You're arguing about how you argue and complaining others don't argue just like you, while validating your point of view as an adult versus six year olds!
Try reading or researching into how real argument and debate works.
Pointless thread.
