PSVR2 vs HP Reverb G2

Pimax is free of all that sign up malarkey. You do sign up for pimax software but that's just email + account creation and inputting your order number. Straightforward and for warranty purposes.
Software is easily setup. And their going native with openXR soon so no more steamVR!
As a lover of G2s astonishing black ⚫♥️ I wanted a replacement that's better.

I found it.+

So I DO need an account to run my headset.

Well I'm not fully conversant in consumer law. But pimax is Chinese.
And l for one want a cast iron clad guarantee 💯 % they won't shaft me if my headset goes Pete tong.
Will also add that when you purchase the headset you asked to give personal details in order for them to mail it to you.
I get that some folks are uneasy with this way of doing things but if it goes wrong your covered.
That's good enough for me.

Doesn't matter if they are chinese, warranty regulations do apply for all sellers on the local market. More precise, the seller is obligated to it, whether it is Pimax directly, or Amazon, or someone else. When my G2 broke, my seller (bestware) replaced it under warranty, not HP.

Not if you jump through the hoops as per. I've had alot or dealings with pimax including reviewing a headset they sent me mths ago in advance. Their a modern tech company and would not bite the hand that feeds them. That's us. The modern day Western gamers.

Quest 3 is an excellent HMD - almost edge-to-edge clarity from the pancake lenses with a decent field of view - and the Meta account I set up to use it required my name, date of birth, and an email address.

Coincidentally the same requirements needed for a Frontier account to play ED.

I am not trying to be difficult. I can see the need for account creation to play an online game. I don't see it for a piece of hardware. I get that the Q3 is standalone and you need some kind of account to run the shop features and such. But in an (my) ideal world, this should be optional. Don't want to run the headset standalone and buy games? No account needed!

I can see the Q3 being the bang for the buck replacement once it's time to say goodbye to the G2. Unless there will be something else on the market by then that offers similar features, possibly with a DP connector, I'm probably going to cave. But I will sit this one out as long as possible.

I'll throw in my contribution to what headset after the G2 to consider here, having been a G2 user.
I switched to the Meta Q3 with the Elite Strap, currently £467.47 on Amazon.
Thanks DS, but I'm happy with my G2, I just want a way to keep using it. Also, as Helmut says:

yeah, but that's.... Meta. Facebook. Evil and the like. The one thing I really liked about the G2 was that it was plug and play. No account creation nonsense and such. Sigh.
That's exactly how I felt when I bought my G2!

My simpit is a work in progress. I'm fond of chopping and changing, adding new peripherals and retiring old ones. So, full disclosure, I was always going to replace the G2 eventually. But this 24H2 malarkey is forcing my hand ridiculously early! The G2 is a superb bit of kit. The resolution is still some of the best in class, it's reasonably light and compact, the sound is good, the refresh is more than adequate.

I like it. I like it a lot!

My plan was to pick up a 5090, possibly a Founders Edition, around release, which is potentially January next year. That'll probably need a new PSU as well, so some modification of the PC will be required. I might add some extra storage at the same time.

I enjoy the whole process and I've already budgeted for it.

The whole 'bricking my headset' thing is a major spanner in the works!

I had hoped to get used to the new GPU, then perhaps move on to a Pimax Super, as early as August (birthday present to me!) or when it releases, if later. I wanted to see what reviewers have to say about system requirements before pulling the trigger. No sense in buying a shiny new headset if my PC can't run it.

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men...

New plan. I've disabled updates in Windows 11. The rig is running sweet right now, I think I can live with it the way it is. 11 has this brilliant feature where you have to keep opting out of updates every few weeks, so I'll have to keep an eye on that, as well as anything else on my system that breaks for want of the latest version of Windows.

What was that about Linux users?

I also liked the G2, but saw its demise coming and decided to sell it while it had some value to fund a replacement.
Can't say I'm keen of Meta either, but they changed from have to have a Facebook account to just an account for which I used not-me credentials.

what turns me off all those standalone headsets is battery life and expected runtime. I don't do that at the moment, but in the past I've played whole afternoon / days on the weekend, we're talking 6 hour+ sessions - can't do that on battery I assume. Also I read that tethered mode isn't as good as wireless, provided you have access tp Wifi 6. Which I don't.

A lot of hoops to jump through to make a headset that isn't meant for it PC based.

Cheap £65 TP-Link Mesh WiFi 6 Booster cabled to you router + USB cable to headset from its PSU (not PC), play as long as you like.

For reasons I won't go into I have no access to modifying the network structure right now. I don't know if that might change in the near future, but for now that's out.

But as I said, I am going to sit it out with the G2 for as long as possible. Support for Windows 10 ends October next year, and the WMR downloads will be purged from the MS store some time in late 2026, I think. Windows 11 24h2 will remove WMR support (or not bring it in the firtst place), and I am not too sure if you can re-insert WMR support into it with the downloads from the MS store.

If in doubt, just stay 23h2 and at least have security support for the OS. I don't care about missing out on "features".

By the way, the biggest question anyway is if the headset breaks before Microsoft does it. My face shield is starting to go flaky, I've had a damaged cable connector once already that required a headset swap (on warranty), and the earpiece connectors are starting to act sketchy - sometimes I need to move them around a few times to get proper audio out of both of the ears.

Yer, with my G2 I had some issues with the spring-loaded pins within the ear pieces not always making contact giving intermittent sound, dismantling and reassembly seemed to sole the problem. I also did manage to buy a v2 face shield as a spare.

I have two 3D printed facial interfaces with... I think HTC Vive PLU cushions that fit perfectly as spare, so I am not worried. Also, if everything fails, you can still buy 3rd party replacements for reasonable prices. The audio issue is more annoying, and I'm worried when the cable connector inside the headset will fail again.

Re WMR - there is some hope for a community framework that will make it functional following the removal of WMR.

I'd feel really bad trying to sell my Reverb G2 now, hence I'm sticking to it until the bitter end (or community solution!).

I'm terms of image clarity, how good is Pimax compared to G2?
