A bit more support for playing as a small group would be a superb addition, I reckon. It would make piracy a lot more viable, and also make defending against it a lot more viable. Plus, the optional ability to play with yer mates is always a good thing, even if it's just two or three of you bodding around the place.

You've just perfectly described what I expect wings to be, fingers crossed

Apart from all "arena" games - Aces High ( avg 400 ) , WW2OL ( oh boy, was quite massive sometimes ), Armas ( baremetal server runs 128+ / 256 max ), etc

90% of MMOs are instanced but they give you a freaking massive feeling with the "public chat areas".

Anarchy Online is actually one of the oldies ( along with EVE and some few others ) that actually bring massive into the tabletop.

Tell me a moden MMO that fits 300 - 600 players in a single combat place... ? Then call it MMO.

Lineage 2 was my first (and the only) MMO I played and it had hundreds of players together. I NEVER missed my friends in it, I didn't even know that there is a thing like instance. Never had to tinker around with re-logins, IP issues or any other limitations in the online game together with masses of friends. A castle siege was always a major event with hundreds of players on both sides - for everyone together at the same time and same place.
So that's how I may be illiterate in regards to how multiplayer games are organized nowadays. :)

ED is far from being an MMO. I wish it would be one because all the info I got about it triggered my L2-experience and without deeper knowledge about the topic I expected it to be an MMO. Maybe one day if the devs have the same initiative.
But that's ok as it is right now as I enjoy flying around in this beautifully constructed universe. I see where a real potential lies in this question and know how better gaming experience it could give but as I'm not a coder and can not contribute anything to it other than playing it I'm alright. And again: ED is not finised in this stage so I can wait for more features with the excitement of a child :)

Agree!

Only the huge (and i had once 1200+ ppl) castle sieges or clan wars were crazy, and not because server side, because gpu's wasnt able to handle it. So yeah, L2 created in me some expectations about MMO's that most of later games werent able to reach. I would love to see such player interactions in ED.

Thanks for the Lineage drop line. What bugs me is that games from the very late 90's / early 00's could have massive numbers in a arena space, sims and some other MP pioneer games and nowadays the netcode seems more fragile. Granted the amount of data going back and forth is bigger but the connections have such a large band that there is no comparison.

ED caters for the group, the Wing, the bunch of space jockeys doing their things. As Braben said, they have the system in place, so from the launch moment onwards is simply making good use of the foundations they built. I expect more MP dynamics and in all honesty I expect most MP groups to be a great bunch of folks that can take a challenge. If a Wing ( max 4 pilots ) want to blockade a Nav beacon there will be wings of traders trying to run the gauntlet. That is dynamic. Same as wings working for competing factions within a system.

Sadly the 32 cap makes for less intense dynamics but overall everyone will have a great experience. Make no mistake, the simple change with Wings will make the entire game, Open and Private groups feel completely different.

And what with lonewolves? For example: I want interaction with players, but mostly do not want to play as group/wingman.

I dont want guilds like eve. The worst time I got was in eve when I needed to go trough some sort of academy with other players in order to get access to some good guild... And then constant grind. Its for no-life people. Dont want to live in such a universe.

This poll needs a third option, which is the one I was hoping ED is going for...something in between. A lot more mulitplayer interaction, that actually works, but staying away from the Guild/Corporation size of player factions. It should be you make your squadron of friends and join the Federation, Empire, or Alliance...and that's it.

Right now your poll only gives you an all or nothing choice, I don't want either.

Agreed and for that reason I have abstained.

I voted for the one that was losing to try and balance it out...because that's what I want, some of both ;D

Considering how the game has been marketed, I think it's critical to get small-size Wings functional, and comms needs a lot of work (including some canned challenge/response text for HOTAS users). That would be enough to make me happy for the few times I'd want to get together with friends in the game.

However, my approach to this game will always be experiencing the Galaxy primarily as a solo pilot. Maybe with friends occasionally, but most of the time alone. If Frontier puts all their design and programming hours into MMO content for the next year, and doesn't also focus on supplying content attractive to people in Solo mode, then I probably won't be playing this game or buying DLC a year from now.

Poll options missing.

Including ( and not limited to )

- Elite was amazing as solo 30 years ago. Eagerly waiting for reliable MP Elite experience.

^ This, indeed.

I love old Elite, I love new Elite, and if the Open/MP aspects of new Elite improve, I will consider playing those as well.

I don't play Elite Dangerous for the combat, trading and exploration all the way. I rather play in solo and have time compression back instead of fsd. I would like them to spend some time on exploration, trade and mystery solving missions. Investigate ancient remains, find a suitable planet, discover spatial anomalies, scan dna traces, search for bacterial life, transport passengers, rescue missions. There's so much that can be done in this huge universe, why default to shooting things.

Don't know what this thread is about as have not read it, but here is a brain dump:

More coop mechanics and opportunity required in stations, mining, piracy, combat etc. in particular player-set missions and contract work in a templated format, more banking facilities to transfer money to players, take out loans from bank, purchase of ship insurance and cargo insurance

Better player comms required in-station, in-system and pan-galactic but tied to buyable ship comms modules

All players in a system should be in the same SC instance and all players at sub-SC should be in same instance

Player-created factions in systems where faction type and associated mechanics are chosen from template e.g. A communist type faction would have specific missions generated and goals to achieve in order to gain influence. Once a controlling influence was achieved then a new set of mechanics would be available including control of npc security, setting political relationships, managing / balancing economy and market place etc

For me ED is a solo experience that can be enjoyed with friends...it wiil never (I hope) = 'The barrens'
What it currently lacks are adequate tools to allow the 'enjoyed with friends' part to provide a meaningful co-operative group experience.
Hopefully this will change once wings are introduced and should enable far more opportunity for players to create their own fun and content such as fighter escorted haulers/miners, group mining operations and more group based combat/pirate hunting etc
Wings alone could radically change the feel of the ED experience

not sure what the point of classes is in this game.

but atm i think there are too few reasons to 'play together' except for killing (cough, griefing, cough) other players.
