PvE player activity dvarves PvP player activity

... in Bungie's Destiny.

And therefore for Destiny 2 Bungie will concentrate on adding PvE content.
This was disclosed in a Bungie talk at GDC.

From PC World:
People seem to assume the split between PvP and PvE is roughly equal, but as the slide above, taken from a Bungie GDC talk on User Research given in 2015 shows, PvE activity actually dwarfs PvP. So it makes sense for the developer to spend commensurately more resources on creating features for PvE players first. http://www.pcgamer.com/the-5-biggest-unanswered-questions-about-destiny-2/

No, no dear mods, this is not actually about Bungie or Destiny!

But I am wondering if this would be the same for Elite Dangerous. Personally I think the chances are that this is indeed similar for ED.
Should FD therefore put expanding the PvE content for ED first?

I think everybody, pve-er and pvp-er alike would profit from this because even pvp-er's main experience is the game world itself.

Of course FD stated that after season 3 they would concentrate on enhancing fundamental gameplay mechanics, so perhaps they agree with Bungie.

I'd like to see an official poll:

Leaving aside Private Groups just for now, which of the three modes below would you play in if they were your only option:

Solo
Open (PvE)
Open (as it is now)

I'd really like to know the answer.

Rather than do a poll, just ask the devs - they know the answer, as they have access to all the telemetry from the game clients.

I think PvE dwarves PvP massively in ED. So I'd hope FD pays more attention to this.

That said, because PvP simply "exists" in ED, it requires constant balancing, and also requires attention.

Solution? Remove PvP!

... I'll get my coat. :p

CMDR Cosmic Spacehead

Oh no, even though I do not care one iota about PvP, I would not want FD to remove PvP at all.
Too many people like PvP and that is perfectly fine by me.
But I do think that PvE content enhances the game for everyone.
All PvP-ers will enjoy an improved Elite galaxy with improved pve mechanics and deeper gameplay in general.
I believe that for a game like Elite PvE is the heart and soul of the game. PvP is extra.

That is why PvE has to be rock solid. I think that therefore FD should have implemented npc crew before multiplayer crew, and npc wings before multiplayer wings.

i missed out on destiny due to not wanting to get on xbox 360 and it not being on pc.

i am really interested in getting D2 however and the news that it is going to be primarily PvE fills me with joy :) single player and co-op MP is the future :D

I too would like to know as well. But I'll bet the PvP players would not like the answers. I'd have to say Solo for me personally, with NPC crew or ships I can wing with.

open as it is now kind of makes this a loaded question. Even the majority of open players admit open as it is now is in desperate need of work. Certainly the devs accept this.

at the very least it need a further option.. "Open when it works as explained in the early dev diaries".

for me, to answer your question - and forgetting PG

as above it would go open PvE followed by solo.

open as it is now i would probably slowly drift away from the game.
------------------

BUT a working open as intended i would prefer over an open PvE.

(PG however will always be my number 1 for numerous reasons).

One of the problems with measuring the metrics though is just because a person isn't currently pulling triggers on someone, it doesn't mean that they aren't engaged in or interested in PvP.

Oh we have had a lot of polls about this, the problem was that the result was always different depending on which forum or reddit section it was asked.

I think the article is true, most players are pve in most games. But there is limit to pve content available in any game. So i would say most people play the available pve content and then uninstall the game and never come back. But in theory in pvp there is no limit to content if the mechanics and pvp is well designed. SO i would think those who are interested in pvp stay with the game much longer as they have stuff to do after they have finished the pve stuff.

One of the problems with measuring the metrics though is just because a person isn't currently pulling triggers on someone, it doesn't mean that they aren't engaged in or interested in PvP.

Or grinding so they aren't in disadvantage in pvp because they have worse gear.

They always concentrate on PvE content though don't they? (except CQC, which was essentially a different game)

The reason we have so much ganking in the game is because PvP has been left to rot - there is no purpose or meaning to it, so people find their own fun.

In the order you gave. If it was the only option, Solo.

Open PvE is all right across the board, wouldn't mind it too.

Only Open? I wouldn't play this game.

(and you forgot a no1 option for many of us, Offline)

Or grinding so they aren't in disadvantage in pvp because they have worse gear.

So... in other words, engaged in PvP to an extent. I mean, if you're in Open, a place where you risk being attacked by other CMDRs at any given time, you are engaged in PvP to a degree.

I get the feeling they want to stay silent on the matter.
One of the devs (Dav, IIRC) acknowledged that the vast majority of player time in E:D is PvE in a relatively recent livestream.

They were obviously talking about combat at the time, and yes, even though such actions are allowed, expected and inevitable in the E:D universe, I've long felt that PvP is simply not a development priority. To support that assertion, I'll simply say: Engineers.

They are already concentrating on PVE content.

Let's summarise:

1.1 - CGs - PVE activity, PVP has no direct influence on CG outcome
1.2 - Wings - Useful for both PVE and PVP
1.3 - Powerplay - can be described as "PVP through PVE activities", no direct contact between players
1.4 - CQC - The only PVP-centric patch so far
2.0 - No PVP-centric features
2.1 - Engineers - Material gathering and engineering is PVE activity, no PVP involved at any stage. Some mods are meant for PVP, but majority of them is designed to be used in PVE.
2.2 - Paasengers and SLFs - obviously PVE-centric patch
2.3 - Multicrew - mainly meant for PVE co-op, not pure PVP like say CQC. Thargoid-related content is pure PVE.
2.4 - Thargoids - looks like PVE patch to me

They always concentrate on PvE content though don't they? (except CQC, which was essentially a different game)

The reason we have so much ganking in the game is because PvP has been left to rot - there is no purpose or meaning to it, so people find their own fun.

The game needs a basic working environment with a few gameloops and that takes up most of the development time.
But FD also implemented multiplayer wings and no winging up with npc.
FD also implemented multiplayer crew, but no npc crew mechanism.

This is not directly for pvp of course, but more multiplayer related, but to me this always seemed a weird decision.
As I said I think FD should have implemented winging up with NPC, and an NPC crew mechanism first.

I would like to add that I sometimes might actually enjoy playing a game with others (not actually tried it in this game's Open, for obvious reasons), but I am not interested in player vs. player (PvP). How about a game where players play together against the game, instead of each other? P&P? ;)

You should try it. People play cooperatively in Open all the time without ever shooting or being shot at by other CMDRs.
