Engineers [PVP] Can anyone explain to me funky gimballed behavior?

If you would be kind enough and take a look at this short 20 second clip you'll understand what I'm talking about.

twitch.tv link Especially at the 15 sec mark the issue I'm describing is made clear. Gimbal tracking just gives up completely.

Is this engineer sorcery or a game mechanic that eludes me?

Thanks.

Your opponent activated Silent Runing mode and started using heat sinks, it allowed him to extremely reduce his signature and reduce gimballed lock of your weapons

Gimbals have a maximum angle they can track within that's dependent on the target's signature. The effect is especially pronounced in the Clipper given its hardpoints are so far from centerline that they have to track pretty far to converge even under ordinary circumstances.

This seems to be the only reasonable explanation. I wasn't aware that silent running had an impact on gimballed lock when the target is so close and appears "red" (instead of grey).

Fascinating. So this is the result of silent running?

Silent running is one of those things that completely breaks PvP and turns it into a rock/paper/scissors kind of thing, but none of the regular PvPers here will ever admit it.

Emissive + seekers. Most pvp ships have them.

But doesn't that sort of prove his point of rock/paper/scissors? ie: You need "rock" ("Emissive + seekers") to counter their "paper"?

ED is getting more and more rock/paper/scissors IMHO. ie: More and more down to outfitting than simply how well you use your load out and fly during combat...

Wow..... you guys just can't wait to attack each other. I made a question thread and it instantly degenerated into meaningless off-topic passive aggressive debate.

If they did activate silent running, but it doesn't do that to your weapons, you only lose lock on your target.

That was chaff that he launched seconds before SR.

I thought the same, but there is no other explanation. I mean how else to do you explain this? http://prnt.sc/d15htp . You can see the lead indicator but none of the gimballed trackers are moving.

Reason why gimbals aint tracked him, its because silent running does break lock, also cause gimballs act like fixed as well on top of that...

Thats why I always fly with Emissive rounds.... If my opponent lost shields and activated silent running or just poped heat sink, rest of my guns always never lose track of that taget.... even if they runs at 0% heat.

Well, e+s is very much a hard counter. That's true. It's also an easy one to fit on. The other standard is feedback Cascade Rail, which nullifies SCBs very effectively. TBH, I think the hardest part of pvp these days (and what ruins it for me) is the need to grind out engineers. The advantage of a meta ship with engineer meta is not counterable so the entry price to pvp is ridiculously high. Anyway, we're going off topic. I don't agree that SL builds ruin pvp as they come at the direct cost of no shields. The way to deal with it is to eyeball and aim fixed. Emissive + seekers just nullifies SL builds completely which is why most FAS's now linger in docks, collecting dust.
