PvP On/Off => More Ppl in Open!

Hi!

Today we have privat groups and Solo mode that lets us prevent unwanted PvP. But the cost is that our galaxy seems to be more empty.
Wouldn't it be better if we all could co exist in Open with optional PVP?

Let us choose to be in PvE or PvP mode. When you enter PvP mode other ppl can see your "PvP-flag" and attack you and you could attack other PvP-Players. You should also not be unwillingly pushed in to PvP by friendly fire, you must deliberately choose to set the PvP-flag. The PvP-flag should not be able to be removed until XXX minutes of no PvP-play. Pretty much the way the PvE servers work in WoW I think. It will be possible to taunt other players to enter PvP and then you are free meat for everyone.... As long as the PvP-flag is set you should not be able to flee to Solo or other groups.

If FD does it this way the OPEN universe will be a place for everyone, and the need for PvE groups will be less to none. In fact all groups could be instanced together in Open with the priority to be instanced together.
What do you think? Am I missing something here?

Unfortunately, its been proven time and time again, that when a pvp flag is toggleable it will be abused in one way or another, and that said open is meant to be "open" not "pvp" nor "pve" exclusively, but both, everything can happen in open, if you find yourself hunted by a lot of pirates, try to find somewhere else to go about what you do, usually the main trouble with pirates is only at hub arena, or well known routes.

When I click solo I do it because I want to play solo and not with others. That involves everything, not just PvP, its not all about PvP you know.

As you said Open should be for everyone, but currently it is only a place for those who accept PvP.

Well, In what ways will it be abused? Enlighten me please! I'm sure FD can make a good design if they know who it can be abused.

I never said they should remove Solo-mode.
I never said it is all about PvP.

What I suggest is a way for all to co exist in Open. If you want to co exist at all, that is.

'Sorry, you can't interact with this person because they have turned off their PVP flag'...

Please no. We don't need yet another gamey mechanic that will further destroy immersion.
You can lobby Frontier to create a PVE grouping option that would only instance like-minded players together, some sort of official Mobius group, but leave Open alone. We don't need more people in open if those people aren't going to be playing by the rules of open.

No this sounds terrible. Open is there for a reason and player groups are there for a reason. If you want to play with people but not deal with pvp you have groups. If you don't want to play with people at all you have solo. As it is fine.

I don't know how many ED players bought the game before it went on Steam, but Steam reports under 7000 players for ED at the peak in the last 24 hours. The lowest was just under 6000. I'm just going to double the number for simplicity sake. If 14,000 people are playing ED at once, each system has from zero to dozens of places where someone could be busy - Res's, planetary landings, stations, conflict zones, unidentified/weak/strong/distress signal sources.....You won't see anybody in these systems until they enter open space in Supercruise.

The Galaxy will seem empty no matter how many people are playing. Of course there are a couple of dozen core systems that will always have lots of traffic but outside that it's just random.

I was in a few systems where the station traffic reports said 100-200 ships in the previous 24 hours. 100/24= 4.16 per hour, so while traffic is light it isn't nonexistent but there is every chance you will not see a ship. It is in one of the places I mentioned above, or you're one of those 4 ships per hour.

PVP/PVE flags will not drastically change the feel of emptiness in such a large volume of space with so many places for people to drop off your scanners even if they are in the same system as you. People who joined Mobius are likely to stay in their solo/PVE galaxy, and people like myself who don't mind some PVP would be irritated at the carebears floating around cluttering the place up unless there was a game mechanic that made it quick and clear (such as scan info that said :pVE ONLY).

IMHO people can play solo all they want. It matters little if the play in open because the place is so vast. The game was partly designed to give us a feel for the size of the galaxy anyway.

I'm sure you would like a la la land where everybodies happy. It dosen't exist in open play of any game. There will always be those who's main enjoyment is harrassing others.

This was actually said in a forum post.Seems like he didn't want to co exist:
"In any case, I'm heading to Robigo tonight. And not to run any missions... so - hope you know how to deal with PvP with pilots that have zero interest in your cargo. ;)"

This is why people play solo.

Outside of the bubble Open becomes the same as Solo because space is big. I fail to see the big deal. If people want to play Open so they come across other real life commanders then stick around the major trade routes and war zones etc. The likely hood of coming across a real commander when you are 1000ly out from the bubble is logically going to tiny and it gets smaller the further out you go.

You said Open would be a place for everyone with this change, I disagreed with that. It won't be.

Opt-in PvP would make the galaxy feel even more sterile and unbelievable.

Before Elite, there was a reason I played EVE and not WoW (or another other MMO with opt-in PvP) - because the increased risk is more fun for me.
In Elite I only ever play in open mode for this same reason.

A PvP switch would make me reach for the off switch...

I play only in open and frankly i prefer to play against people who willingly choose an open pvp environment. The others can have the other two game modes.

If you want to avoid any chance of PvP then join the private group called Mobius. Last time I saw there were 50000+ people in it and anyone can join.

The no PvP in Mobius is voluntary but you'll likely get kicked out if you do any.

However even with tens of thousand of players in Mobius the universe is a very lonely place. Away from the core systems open is quiet so you can imagine how unpopulated other instances will be.

Unwanted PvP in Elite is not a big problem. It exists but it's rare. The fear of it is much bigger than the reality.

yes you are

20000 inhabited systems 100000 stations or bases = no problem with PVP as you are a needle in here somewhere so easy to avoid PVP

The optional bit comes in because Galnet points us to places where lots of people might be

This is indeed exactly why I play Mobius/Solo exclusively.

And heck Mobius already has your optional pvp. Just enter any conflict zone. Commanders in these zones may fire freely at opposing viewpoints ssels regardless of their pilots.
