PVP players needing acess to Activities.

Recently I been killed...

I have though aboutmy view on PVP before.
Why people get frustrated with ganking, or do it.
But now I understand more about both sides of this topic.

I was always meant to be a PVP player, but after delving into the game, my focus had to change.
Today I'm happly doing a lot of AX combat, trading, and some research.

While trying to advance our understanding of the Unknown Relic, I stopped at a known Guardian SIte to farm more Relics. By this point I've spent some hours gathering a lot of probes, links and all kinds of thargoid itens to shove in the Thargoid Structure and other places like the Maelstrom.

I don't own a Fleet carrier, so I was doing everything on the same Anaconda.

When I had to do further tests and came back to gather 1 last unmodified Guardian Relic. I was killed.

I was shocked.
What would be gained by this player parking a combat SRV on the Guardian Structure just to kill incoming players so defenseless.
I was frustrated that I lost all that diverse cargo that took a long time to gather. But this player, his situation is way worst...

Above all, I was mostly intreeged about why isn't it obvious the reason this happens [ganking]. And most obivously it's solution.
This is a thread about why is ganking so annoying and what should be done to fix it in the current game possibilities.
So I'll ignore the hours I invested on that journey to talk about a far more important issues.

Grieffers are Grieving
I've started playing ED to be a PVP player. Have a figher better than all others and fly some inventive Ship build.
Very soon it became clear that I needed to work for that.

  • I needed a better ship
  • I needed to engineer it and progress a lot of the game
  • And I needed training.

All this time you are grinding credits or materials, probably trading and doing other things you hadn't imagined.
Even enjoying it. All leadding towards that combat ship that will finally enable you to handle yourself in PVP.

Eventually some ganker will come and atack you, but after reflecting you will think: OOOH, one day I'll have a ship to deal with them.
After all that farm, doing Wing Missions solo, watching videos, building your ship, becoming ''ELITE''.
Now it's time to kill some players.

But where? How? Do I need to interdic random players? Or keep running around searching for wanted people on a 1x1 Milky Way?
Maybe go to CG systems and call people out for duels...

The PVP player will try everything, but unfortunatly there is no easy acess to pvp. Unlike any other activity, there are no missions for that.
There are no definitive ways to engage in it within the game. All that effort you put into preparing for it will become frustration.
There is no PVP...

The player knew this was no arena FPS where you match make, or a medieval MMO where you PVP:Queue...
But thye knew there was player vs player gameplay, a war in space, piracy, squadrons, every feature that points to player combat being a part of the game.
It was one of the reasons that brought them to this game, this space. Made them work so hard and explore a bunch of different experiences, yearning for that moment you would put fear in the skys.

Soon this same player will randomly atack another, just to see if it sparks some feeling of action.
To see if it atracts a response from a PVP player, and reward them with the so desired experience.

The player who killed me would never destroy an Anaconda with the Combat SRV, it was released into the game, but there is no situation that requires or incentivises it's use.
The same goes for another player who parked their Fleet Carrarier nearby just to kill unsuspecting players with it's Viper MK IV.. When would he use that fighter/bomber fly-by build? There is no cenario or activity for those players, but all the features in the game point towards it's possibility.

The frustrated player became the fear in the skys themselves, because they are moarning for something they never had.
Yearning for something that was already lost.
Think about it. Players are loosing hours of their progress because some one else lost even more hours in expectations.
Basically every one ends up loosing because a group is bored and abbandoned.

Recently I been killed... and I wish it happens again.
But I wish it was PVP oriented.

-I want people to destroy each other, and do it over and over again, because it's fun. And if I'm not up for that, than that player will easly find someone else.
-I want to know that the person who destroyed me had a reason. Because the gained a lot of materials, or money, or commodities... what ever I understand could be a possibility, even If I'm not sure.
-I want that players actions to have meaning for the both of us.

I want a pvp feature.

I've been trying to get into PVP for a long time, but I'm not a ''Discord/Group'' player. I don't wanna look in external sources for PVP. A huge majority of the playerbase wont.
The game is not meant to be played externally.

So besides being ganked or duelling a friend, PVP players have no way to achieve their desired gameplay.

Many people want to engage in combat with other, but lack:
-acessible methods
-incentives
-progression

There is not a single feature pointing you towards / instancing you with / incentivising duel with ; another player.
There are no rewards, generic or unique, to destroying or interacting in combat with a player. Any material dropped could be farmed in bulk. And Player bounties are very very low.
Piracy is very different from combat, as is mostly unviable in PVE and PVP because of the modules necessary for the gameplay, and how they aren't effective in their job. Compared to most Activities.
There is no way to engage in early PVP besides following the same 2 steps mentioned. With another player who hasn't unlocked engineering yet.

There is the argument that CQC is for the PVP players, but is so separate from the rest of the game. It's so limiting.
It is literally another game. One where I can't build ships, engage in huge battles, use any medium/large ships, or even the smaller ones we own.
There is this whole match making feature for it, also a matchmaking feature for multi-crew.

Why is there no matchmaking for PVP? Is it because it isnt immersive?
How about a consistent/recurring Community Goal-like system about PVP actions in that system? A single system that doesnt spawn NPC's, and missions are for combat in that system.

I could list various different changes to modify existing scripts to include PVP elements, ajust existing mechanics, incorporate new ones.
There are so many existing features that could make PVP acessible, but not a single sign of change.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wan't to end this on a positive note.

-For the guy that ganked me, thank you.

It reminded me why I started playing this game.
Why I get frustrated faming for a fleet carrier, or unsatisfied after killing alot of thargoids.

It's because I want PVP, to test my skill AGAINST other players.

So yeah... Go out there and commit random murder. Fight for the Thargoids.
Make use of the current narrative and start pushing for a change.

Make community goals unbarables, Thargoid repel impossible, make PVP happen.
If the narrative pushes the game foward and we are telling a tale of war.

Go do war.

And for the rest of you, fly safe o7

I think ED is not meant for this kind of PvP. If you want dogfights with other players as your main game incentive perhaps there are other more suited space games out there.

What about the often mentioned San Tu community? Try to get in touch with them, perhaps there you can find what you are looking for.

If someone can't get challenging PvP and decides instead to simply gank people who can't fight back, i don't see why FD should do anything for players like this.

There are people like the guys at San Tu who set up friendly PvP matches for those wanting to test their skills, and everyone who takes part does so willingly in a ship they can fight back with.

I understand ED is not a PVP game.
I would'nt be playing it if PVP / Combat was it's main focus. As I said, love to do all other things.
It's a Simulation / Sandbox

I don't support this intrusive PVP behaviour

I'm pointing out that ganking / frustration is a consequence of the game's handdling on PVP.
-Allowing PVP
-Not supporting PVP players

Not only would there be less frustration with random ganking.
A good aspect of the game could me more flushed out.
Third Party initiatives to support a faded feature wouldn't be needed.
And player ganked might be less frustrated understanding the pattern and reasoning for ganks.

While any other activity like mining or exploring, even PVE is acessible at will. A PVP player depends on another, and the game does not provide a bridge.

Imagine a game like World of Warcraft [ very diffrent, but MMO ]
-Allowing World PVP
-Not supporting acessible/exclusive PVP activities

Even though the game is mostly combat PVE, players that want PVP and can do it, will do it.
Without direction Incentive or progression, this players will lead to a situation where high level players are in populated areas hitting random people until they find a duel.
-Because the game has factions[teams], combat, possibility to damage another player, and players wanting to play against others.

Players who choose to gank do so for their own reasons - not necessarily out of frustration that a game where other players, and therefore PvP, are an optional extra does not contain features that require PvP.

Even if a PvP driven game feature were to be introduced ganking would not stop.

.... and there seem to be a significant number of players with no interest in PvP - so Frontier has to think about them too.

Not because of frustration.

Mainly because PVP in ED is a perfect incentivization of griefing
(a pvp-er will not win anything out of a pvp fight, the only thing a pvp-er can hope for is to make the other one lose something and extract salt out of it)

And secondly, because they can - there are no real C&P mechanisms in place to prevent griefing.

I don't think ganking would stop with a PVP system.
But this anwser would change.

PVP should desincentivise griefing

If there was any reasoning for a combat, than a player ganking is litterly outside that reasoning.
Currently there is none. As you said, you win nothing but the time in the experience, the other player loses.
What if no player loses in a specific cenario, or what if a player won something while the other didnt lose?

Would this player still go do the griefing combat? Or is the lack of options so huge that griefing is one of the only options?

These are PVP specific desires, features. The support im talking about.

And about the frustration of the ganked player. Would you reather die for nothing and not understand the reason?
Or be sure that the only reason for that action is: This person is horrible

Couldn't agree more.
-Ganking will never stop
-A majority of the playerbase does not care about PVP

But my reason to bring up the topic is this very same.
[ A number of players with some interest in PvP - so Frontier has to think about them too. ]

Hope the point eventually comes across as intended. I think the game and players would benefit alot from even the smallest change to PVP feature support.

Then there would be collusion to "win" rewards designed for contests with no actual contest.

Some players have no interest in PvP, "justified" or otherwise, so would rather be left alone by those who choose to initiate unwanted combative interactions.

That some players bought a game that does not support their needs is not Frontier's fault - nor do they necessarily need to accommodate them (although they may choose to).

For example:
  • it's been clear for years that some players want PvP to be able to be forced on other players;
  • some players don't accept that players in Solo and Private Groups share the ability to affect the mode shared galaxy;
  • some players want an Open-PvE game mode;
  • some players want Solo and Private Groups to be removed from the game completely.
.... and Frontier have not changed the game to suit those players.

October, last AX CG before U14.

I was in open (on 3 different accounts - due to the heatsink rewards), joining random AX CZ. Gankers were there too.
1) On one account some tried my Shield tank Cutter and obviously failed to do anything, but still an interdiction was a waste of time for me (and for them too), and while in the AX CZ i had to bail out once to get rid of a persistent one.
2) On another account i got no ganking attempt (shieldless krait mk2)
3) On a 3rd account i got ganked twice while flying a shieldless Challenger in an Ax CZ, fighting interceptors/scouts, already damaged. So i've seen the rebuy screen twice. Once i managed to get back in time to still get credit for the Hydra we were fighting, the second rebuy was just in time to send me to station to cash in the bonds and switch to another account. Luckily, i haven't lost anything. But if i would have lost my 150 millions, that evening bonds, it would have been very painful

So, even tho i didnt basically lost anything, and they didnt won basically anything (except yet another bounty) - i was still griefed (in italics because i wasnt really felt griefed because ultimately i havent really lost anything)

So, even if FD removes all death penalties, griefing will still occur.
Maybe because there is still a type of penalty they cannot remove - we do lose out precious gaming time with every attempt. No idea, just saying.

Edit: they also managed to ruin several instances that were progressing nicely, by killing some players and driving the others out of the instance.
In this case, it looks like the gankers seen people having fun and decided to put an end to that. Pretty much like having 3 kids building a sand castle on the beach and a 4th come by and ruins it. 🤷‍♂️

I think things are being analysed though a very numeralistic mentallity.
PVP is about subjective enjoyement as much as any other activity.

Wanting to win is not the same as wanting to compete.

The scenerio where no players loses, or only a single player wins, are both subjective to ''fun''.
If both players are ACCEPTING of certain conditions. No player loses in ''fun'', credits or time spent to perform that activity are not the matter for the fun factor in competition.
If a player only enjoys winning, then he will only have fun with a victory, if this same player enjoys competing, it will have fun with the PVP activity itself.

Currently, both players lose in some aspect.
The player ganking is probably not having much fun, the one ganked had no fun + frustrations.

Yes, I do go to Shinratra. I do eventually find a propper duel, but it's about acessibility / support.
No waiting around asking people. Looking for player groups in the internet. An in game activity in par with others.

All of these features and desires are excludent...
As I said, there are already features in the game that offer all the base necessary to implement a basic support for Complied PVP Actitivy.
-Player finding [ CQC Match making / Multi-Crew Finder ]
-Private Instancing [ Private Groups , CQC, Separate Server Shards creating different instances in the same place]

If you can quickly find an do PVP without bothering anybody else. That's all it's needed.

This would more than allow PVP interested people to engage in the activity without negativily affecting any other aspect of the game.
Also it's not the most time consuming development feature possible, with everything already in the game.
Is this bad or undisered for the playerbase?

before the engineers, maybe until version 2.1 we had player versus player interaction because it was just possible: you fitted a ship with some weapons and give it a go! with the appearance of the engineers this is not possible anymore. unless you are especially fitted and trained for "pvp" you are faced with something like "chaff, target lost, chaff, chaff, target lost, target lost, drive malfunction, fsd not charging, eject, eject...". this one not even had a chance at least to TRY to engage in player versus player interaction. this is a totally one sided play with no chance for the other. when a game design is made so bad that your attempt to return fire or to just leave your pc alone having a nice coffee until your ship is dead will end up in the same result it is no wonder that players often tend to just "pull the plug": they simply never had a real chance to TAKE PART in this so called "pvp" - which was never player versus player because there was no player versus player interaction possible at all. -.-

Indeed - and some players take no enjoyment from either initiating or being the target of PvP.
Someone must have been getting enjoyment from interdicting me whilst I was delivering for the CG last night. Six times in a row in five minutes, you would have thought that they would have taken the hint that I was not interested and left me alone. I high waked out to put an end to this unwanted interaction.

So, I lost 10 minutes of playing time dealing with the ganker and delivered much less cargo than I would have liked (to support the community goal) because I had to fly a ship (with engineering) to win the unwanted PvP. The only reason that I say "win the PvP" is because if has been put forth that surviving the encounter is part of the PvP and "winning". In this case, using the "Brave Sir Robin" tactic!

We all want our version of ED don't we. :)
I want a pvp feature.
Nice. :) Just leave us out of it, it must be optional.

PVP should desincentivise griefing
Griefing isn't the only reason why people stay out of Open & PvP combat. Griefing isn't really the only problem - the same way PvP isn't the only solution.
People, behavior, toxic attitude, noise, technical peer2peer issues, distractions while doing something else. The list goes on.
Combat isn't the only thing in game, people will often want to "do their thing", often undisturbed. :)

Currently, both players lose in some aspect.
Nope. I don't lose out. And that's not for others to decide, that's for each of us individually to decide. :)
