Python!

It's a great ship - had it pre-nerf and engineered it's even better than that. I fly it more than the big three combined.

Congrats @OP - make sure you get an upgraded FSD and dirty drives on it as a priority.

i saw a few references to dirty drives. what are they? i was thinking just getting upgraded thrusters but now the dirty drives have me thinking.

My thoughts are that ship balance is in a sad state when only one ship out of dozens is highly anticipated as a goal among players.

Like nobody posts about wanting FdL's, Cutters, Anacondas, and Corvettes? I think the only thing that has changed is the fact that more people are posting about ships here instead of the correct sub-forum. I'd be more concerned about how engineering is removing all disadvantages and how that affects balance.

Let me know when you can engineer an FDL or 'vette to have the same jump range as an Asp. :p

People post about grinding rank, or about what they've already been doing in their FDL. Little about anticipation or excitement.

Indeed, most of the time when they get to the FDL and are inspired to make a post, it's about how disappointed they are.

That's because the Python is the ship to grind in. People default to it as a means to "finish" climbing up the ship totem pole without any thought of what they do when they get to the top. They have plans for the Python which delve deep into the imaginary glory of it's earning potential. The big 3 are a "I have it now so I'll use it." sort of thing. Hardly anyone is drooling with anticipation by the time they get done grinding for those ships, because they've already gotten their fill of the game sitting in a Python and there's nothing new left to experience. It's just more of the same.

If I was to start a new account and buy me a Python, the very first thing I'll do would be Dirty Drives 5.

Then it's a beast.

Python is my favorite ship in the game, and the only reason I went to an Anaconda is for fighter bay/7A prismatic shields. Word of warning, tho-- you can get in over your head quickly and I'd consider it very vulnerable until you get A-spec (and it's expensive rebuy). But once you engineer A-spec shields, engines and weapons, you're fairly safe in anything but Combat Zones if you play it smart.

Let me know when engineering the jump range of a FdL or Corvette to be the same as an Asp has anything to do with... anything?

People post about how much they like the various ships all the time. They just don't tend to do it here.

The disappearance of weaknesses. It only applies to firepower, everything else that FDev has been using to gimp ships remains gimped.

Put a poll up asking what everyone's favorite ship they're currently flying is.

I dare you.

As long as it includes the "none" option. I have access to all the ships I want.

The Vulture is probably my favorite to use in the game and the Eagle is probably my favorite to pilot.

Don't get me wrong, the Python can be a beast, of course, and very effective in terms of game-play.

Congratulations!!!
The Python was the end game ship for me. Though I have the Vette, Cutter and Conda, they were all a by product of what I can do with with my Python.
Problem is, you need to know how to fly her. She is not the beast that people keep talking about. But when you learn, she is so much fun,

I agree to disagree. I also just got a Python, after much debate with myself about the short FSD Range, but after Engineering, i think i can live with her 31ly range. Also, i blow NPC Elite Condas out of space with ease (as long as they are alone) and a friend of mine bought a conda...he's dumped about 200m into the conda (i've scratched 120m with the python) and he has absolutely no chance...his shields are gone in a matter of seconds and he can't even get past my second ring of shields.

It is an absolute beast - if you can handle her. She's a bit sluggish and you have to fly her with both hands, and you need to constantly shift your power focus (haven't engineered my distributor...need to get access to that engineer first)...but if you do, the python is one of the best ships in the game. Also, i have to say, she has the best looking cockpit of all the ships and with the extra pack, she looks quite good. The only downside i have with her, is the damage model, compared to the 'Conda...which is none existent.

I even blew a Federal Corvett out of a CZ yesterday...however, i had 6% hull left and limped with failing FSD and thrusters back home, no ammunition, burned out everything...but it was one hell of a victory for me.

Curious. My Python is geared and engineered for combat and it cost in excess of 230 million. My Conda, with discounts, is close to 500. Sounds like your friend's build is not very well geared for combat. Trade Condas are easy to take out.
You managed an impressive jump range with a Python that can fight. Mine goes a smidge over 21 ly with grade five fsd boost. I'm curious about your build. This is mine:

Engineering makes it quite the ship. Totally agree with you on good pip management requirements. Good use of boost and fa off also a must.

Go smuggling! Enjoy having the biggest ship that can land at outposts. Loved my Python. Enjoy the cockpit! Enjoy the engine sounds! It's fun to fly.

Not sure how you'd get a Python to 230m, except with reactive surface composits, which to me, do make absolutely no sense. -34% of ThR is a no brainer for me, since pretty much everything that fires something against me, is either Lasers or Plasma Accs. And having -68% of KiR is also not an option, since there are some few missiles flying around, but no where near enough to justify 130m just for the hull plating.

He has a pretty good fitting on his 'Conda, no A-Parts though, since they are way beyond his financial capabilities at the moment (and probably will be for a long time). That is one reason, why i probably never going to get a 'Conda - it's just to expensive and not justified for anything PvE - IMHO. PvP, maybe, but i have absolutely no interest in PvP except with people i know and trust not to blow my ship up and know, when to stop.
Anyway, he can manage in Hazardous RES.

That's my fitting for combat - i lucked out with the FSD, but i was talking about an empty freight python ;) Combat-Ready she also has a smidge over 21 Ly, but i'm in the process of getting the Grade 5 FSD Boost, which should get me around 23 Ly...although i'm not sure if it's worth it. (However, 41 Ly of Range, unladen and empty sounds pretty amazing for a python...that's ASP X territory...45 ly was the most, i managed on my ASP X)

And this for hauling freight

276 Tonnes Freight, ~ 38 Ly unladen and ~23 full. Depending on where and what i haul, i alter between no shields and a 6C Fuel Tank, which still gives me around 210t, but a huge amount of range (around 250 ly - IIRC, starchart seems to be broken at the moment at EDShipyard and Coriolis hasn't been updated recently to include the Engineering-Stuff)

She's a must have for engineering.
As for dirties, they give you more speed in exchange for a few downsides:

I have put on the clean drive variant of the dirty drives on my Python. It's a little less fast (boost to 380) but also with fat less downsides... With this modification and some good shields armor and weapons i can make it for hours now in combat zones...
