Q about NPC behaviour

If you drop out of SC in a system so your sitting in your own patch of space do you ever get NPC's dropping in?

I'm sure this happened to me, I dropped out to use the toilet, when I got back I could see the hostile scan message in my comms, I keep meaning to try it out.

Never had it happen to me. I often drop out of supercruise to an empty instance to idle and have yet to see someone stumble across my signal source.

I dont now about random space locations, but certainly after visiting a USS and collecting illegal cargo, Ive had system ships drop in to scan me.

If I do this, I make sure I'm running nice and icy, as attention is the last thing I want when afk. I think that depending on your heat sig, you may appear as a USS to other super-cruisers (Not tested - can anyone confirm?) and may attract attention form npcs too (again, I've not sat around watching and waiting to test this out).
I like the thought of staying in game while making a brew - my commander is definitely the type to need a cockpit cup holder and zero-g mug :)
I just wish my ship could alert me to any new contacts while in the galley (Mobile app anyone? :D)

I don't think NPCs stumble across you if you drop to an empty instance with no destination lock, but any players who were in supercruise with you before you dropped should be able to lock on to your FSD wake. No idea if new players jumping into that supercruise instance would see the wake or a USS though. Given that USS are randomly spawned in front of you regardless of speed, I don't think a player at sublight would show up as one.

Thanks for the responses guys n gals, I decided to play it safe and log out. I just hate replotting my route. Much less of a hassle in 1.1 though :)

One advantage to logging out instead of idling in game is you're not burning fuel or building up wear and tear either. I once left my ship flying on a random direction in SC while I went for a bit of dinner, and when I came back and jumped to a starport, the wear and tear bill was a bit of a shock. Made me reconsider ever doing that again.

Personally I land when I want to leave the computer, unless I am grabbing a beverage quickly...

....and even then I am worried something is trying to blow me up when I get back

I think you are probably right about all of this. I think it would be nice if heat sig, and other activity might represent as a USS for SC players, and attract inquisitive or marauding Npc's in the future, if it doesn't already.
Silent icy ships should really stay as lost as a needle in a haystack though.

Wear and tear wont destroy your ship, its capped. I dont bother repairing the w&t on my explorer or trade ships. Just seems a waste of cash

I thought not until last night.

Dropped with no destination lock in a system I was scanning.
There were no NPCs in the system, but one joined my instance about 5 minutes later - which is too long to have targeted my wake.

So it can happen.
