Quest 2 - My Initial Impressions

Hi all, first time ED user here and after having done the initial tutorials only yesterday, I already feel the need to get myself a VR headset to experience this game with maximum immersion šŸ˜‹. I also play racing sims like the OP does so this is just another reason to finally take the plunge (or that's what I say to convince myself at least). It will be my very first headset so I thought the Quest 2 would be the most affordable and all round best option seeing Zuckerberg already stole my data anyway. Should I go for the 64gb version or the 256gb version? You guys think the extra GB's would come in handy in the long run when VR games become bigger in size? Or you have more than enough with 64GB and just install or uninstall games from it when needed? Using a PC and steam so everything is on there already anyway but it would be good to know. Cheers!

I’ve got the Rift S & Quest 1 (and probably getting the Quest 2) - I’d suggest getting the 64GB version - the games that you’ll be playing most of will be the ones already on your PC. The Quest exclusives are things I’ve played a few times, enjoyed for the hours they last, then deleted. The few I’ve left installed (Beat Saber, Vader Immortal, The Climb) have left acres of gigglebites left.

The future is as always hard to predict, but here are my two cents: I also bought the Quest 2 for PC gaming, and while I have some "standalone" apps and games on the Quest installed, I hardly use them. They are nice and it's definitely a cool experience to stand in your living room without cables (which you even could do for PC games using Virtual Desktop) and everything, but in comparison to PC games they just lack behind. To me, with the little experience on the apps I have, they have too much of a "mobile" feeling to them, without too much depth. So, if you are a PC gamer, I think you will probably not install too many games/apps on the Quest, which are also not too big anyway. Save the 100 (?) extra bucks and invest into VR games. ;-)

Oh, and welcome, Commander! Godspeed!

Thanks! Now all I need to do is double check is if my stomach is VR ready as well. Only one way to find out.
True! For me I felt dizzy a bit in the beginning, but it was never too bad and got better over time. Still, I had a much better start in comparison to when I tested a Rift some years back - I tend to believe this is because of the higher framerate and lower latency.

A word of advice - don’t try to ā€œpush throughā€ any nausea. Take off the headset if you start to feel any symptoms.

The initial training level with Oculus (a caravan with a little robot) is good to start off with. Elite can be a bit intense to start - just sit on the pad and soak it in for a bit. Short play sessions should build up your VR legs within a week or so.

Oh, and ā€œmaintain vehicle horizonā€ for the SRV worked wonders for my planetside drives.

Hope you enjoy that first EDVR moment as much as I did - I’m still feeling it since 2017 😁

Yeah I kinda figured the space environment and the spaceship turning around in all directions is probably one of more difficult scenarios to start out with, whereas in a sim racing game for example you mostly move left and right only. Also I wear glasses I already read in this thread that you can use the Quest 2 with them, but they are quite big and get scratched easily so I reckon VR prescription lenses are a good move?

Project Cars 2 is superb in VR but I find it to be a bit of an intense experience as well šŸ˜… - I think part of my problem there is frame rate issues though. I like the eye-candy too much!

I can’t advise about glasses or inserts - reviews I’ve seen have said there’s enough space in the HMD, but when my eyesight finally packs up (and I can tell age is taking its toll) I’ll be getting some inserts. They don’t look too expensive and it’s one less little bit of faff.

Actually I find this video and it seems you can just use them with glasses on due to the included extension, the dude is wearing big ones as well:

ps. if you like Project Cars 2 you should pick up Automobilista 2. Runs on the same engine so VR works great but it's an upgrade in FFB and physics compared to the former. They are continuously improving on where SMS left off.

You absolutely don't need any more than 64GB.
I can't remember where but I listed all the games I have installed on the standalone Q2 (at that point obviously). There is alot and some big games e.g. Saints and Sinners, Robo Recall, a couple of Darth Vaders, The Climb and loads of smaller games. I still have a good chunk left and don't feel remotely close to worrying about space.

Assetto Corsa the first one! Wait for a frequent sale and grab the whole lot for peanuts.

I have PC2, AM2, ACC but keep returning to AC. Fab physics (I think the best), easily the best ffb of all listed and runs like a charm. Also looks fab with the Sol mod. Your 1080 is better than my 1070 so you can crank up the HMD even further. I get 90Hz with nearly max setting (I turn off reflection - which you cant see in the cockpit, lower mirror res and have high shadows).
TBH my system can't run AM2 or PC2 very well at all, but I am all about the feel of the cars for muh immersun! and AC has that in buckets.

Edit
Might have been unfair to AB2, I uninstalled ages ago and I hear it has had some good updates

Did you try this mod in VR already?

Sorry for the off topic šŸ˜‹

I think we're talking at cross-purposes a bit. I'm aware that the sole battery lifetime is probably around 2h, which I think is what you are referring to. My question was what the on-time would be with the Quest 2 hooked up to the PC. I found similar posts than what you linked to, so indeed battery drain should be lower when connected to PC, but noone seems to give any hard number here - I had hoped guys in this forum probably would have some experience with this.

Are you all playing with Virtual Desktop, i.e. cable free?
Depending on the output that your USB-C port can supply, it can either keep it charged, charge it or slow the discharge rate. I have an Alienware m17 r3 with a PD Thunderbolt (USB-C) port. It is capable of putting out enough power to keep my Quest 2 charged while I play. Not sure the exact power out of the port but it's enough.

Regarding the capacity of the Quest, as always it depends, but as @[VR] andysonofbob says 64 is currently more than enough. It's only a matter of convenience. As for future proofing the device... maybe. But currently there's no standalone quest VR game that big. And I am sure that developers won't cross that boundary anytime soon. Worst case scenario - you will be taking a laptop with you on your trips to change games.

Bought the 64gb version thanks to the advice of you lovely people. Should be here next week (y)

Sweeeeet!

It might take a couple of days for your Q2's firmware to update. And the Oculus Home software also need to be updated though I don't see why it wouldn't be when you download it! If at any point it says 'Link beta' or similar, it hasn't updated yet so will look rubbish.

What system have you got? Mine is rubbish [waiting for the 3080s to be in stock!] so I have to have the slider at lowest.

We're in the same boat mate! My 2021 plan was to get a new GPU first and then VR so that kind of fell into the water.. I'll try and get an RTX 3 series this year but so far my specs are GTX1060, Ryzen 5 3600 and 16gb RAM. I did read that the Quest 2 is one of the more gentle headsets when it comes to requirements. At least I hope it will be.
