Quest 3 game breaker problem

Hi all, bit he bullet and moved from a HP Reverb G1 to a Meta Quest 3. New unit arrived on Saturday last and I'm pretty impressed with the stand alone features like mixed reality (the first encounters demo is a laugh and amazing) but I digress....

I need to play PCVR (not wirelessly due to the layout of the house and existing wireless topology plus I'm not shelling out even more for another router...and thats IF I could get it to work ;)) hence the purchase of a good quality charging/data cable (Kuject) and now the problem.....I almost immediately got an error in the headset stating that there was 'liquid/dirt' in the charging port and that the port would be disabled, or words to that effect, end result....no charging and NO data throughput AT ALL., and this doesn't resolve no matter which USB 3 port I connect to :(

Didn't even get into ED to try and set up some graphics properly (but at first glance it did appaer to be much clearer and sharper that the G1)

Does anyone here have the same issue when connecting via USB 3 cable to the PC?

A quick search on the Meta community forums threw up a disturbing number on this issue, namely here....

....524 posts!!!

Apparantly it's an issue directly related to the latest firmware update v62. Before that there were no reports of this. It has now been 4 weeks since the issue was raised!

I really want to love the Quest 3 in ED.....but.....

Please respond if you have it or had it.

Cheers guys
Bob

What are you waiting for? RMA it

I had a go on the Quest3. It is a fine device. Lots of annoying steps to get it to work. Very unuser-friendly. When setup all was fine. (You will not be able to get decent quality in pc games using wireless)

You probably know this but just incase not you need a USB 3.2 port
I know you have said you can't play wireless but just to confirm the facts about wireless connection to the Q3 if set up correctly.
I play wireless by using "Virtual Desktop" not the Meta APP Link software or Steam VR and the image quality is very high with both ED Odyssey & MS Flight Simulator

Hi, I already had this problem when I tried to use a usb c magnetic adapter.
I removed it and then everything was fine back again

I tried elite with my Q3 wired without it and everything is fine.

this usb c magnetic adapter., works perfectly with my PSVR2 with my PS5 but on PC or with the quest I get this message.

It might be related to the power available through the cable, so have you tried to change the cable and plug an another one to the PC? A smaller one? maybe v62 add a length restriction or other power voltage specification ?

Thanks guys.

GroG79 - my return window on Amazon is till April 1st (apt or what....that date is called 'April Fool's Day' here) so I'm hoping for a quick'ish hotfix (yeah, right!) from Meta (without doubt a firmware issue) so the trouble is....unless I can manually stop the update....it'll probably arrive (the replacement) with v60 firmware (knowing my luck it'll be up to date at v62!)

Added to that, they announced a 'pushed' update on March 14th so whether you have updates turned off or not it'll grab it regardless (wondering if I could disable the wifi in the headset?) I agree though, it's very nice and definitely a jump up from my Reverb G1 (and I also found it fiddly as hell to set up....don't like cell phone setup's)

DeckerSolo - yes mate, definitely plugged into one of the four 3.2 ports. Just for daftness I plugged it into a lesser port and it complained about it :) I know how you prefer to play ED, I read avidly your previous posts on how you set it up :) but for me it's a non starter due to cost and general ing around with the existing set up here :(

I have a replacement cable here now (from INIU)......trying to build up the courage to swap the other one out......but I'm nearly certain we'll be back to the same issue.

Cheers
Bob

My missus bought a Quest lll against my advice ( I said get a G2 reverb) and a Chinese charger/data cable for it too.
19.95 she paid for the cable on amazon.
She's had nps wotsoever with it. And she says the image quality is defo better with the cable rather than wirelessly.
Urrrghh ! G2 is better though. I've had her headset on with exactly the same settings as l got on the g2.
Just my penny worth!

Patrice_from_CA - thank you, I definitely think you're on the right track. Cable is advertised as being Quest 3 compatible and I'm utilising the Oculus power adaptor and mini cable. Going to try the replacement cable shortly.

Dragsham - Glad to hear your wife has had no issues (neither did anyone else until that firmware update came along) but I think, at the moment, I agree with her.....definitely an upgrade over my G1....but to be honest I haven't been able to try it out in ED fully due to this issue! (funnily enough I too tried for a G2 on Ebay but got outbid, then I saw the deprecated announcement of WMR by Microsoft. That did it for me)

Well, well.....it seems to be working! Replaced the cable with the one from INIU and voila! connected AND charging.....fingers crossed it stays this way 🙏

Now I have another problem, I cannot for the life of me get ED to work in OpenXR (it did work the one time because I enabled the 'Turbo' experimental setting in there)

The only way I can get the game to run now is I start the game by calling up my PC desktop (with 'dash') in the headset, and using the controller I point to Steam in the task tray and then click on 'Elite Dangerous'.......no OpenXR (I verify it's not working by trying to call up the Openxr tools app...no joy)

If I use my mouse at the desktop (outside of the headset) in order to start the game in Steam, it comes up with an Openxr error (one of them was error 13)

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance for any advice
Bob

Ah yeah wmr.
I connect using OpenXR. No issues at all.
I assume you mean you are using OpenComposite. But whatever you use is irellevant. Be aware that the G2 will not work anymore once Microsoft decides to completely remove WMR from future versions of Windows - for which I have seen speculations as early as Windows 11 24H2, which comes late this year. It is unlikely it will be removed via "normal" updates, but if you update your OS regularely, it will happen sooner than later.

Advocating any WMR headset at this point is a very bad idea. If you're the type to keep your OS up to date, your WMR headset is bound to become a brick (this is why I will stay with 10 as long as possible). WMR is dead, and WMR headsets don't run without WMR.

Personally I use Minimal ED Launcher to start ED in various different modes*; with or without VR, horizons vs ody etc via individual desktop shortcuts. I started using it because ... I actually can't remember, but it was related to OpenComposite, no SteamVR on a Steam version of the game. Basically just create a shortcut/s to minimal launcher and edit the target line with the arguments you require. I just open the Oculus Dash, and from the monitor view I start ED from one of those shortcuts. No SteamVR.
My son edits the ED argument line within Steam when he switches from VR to pancake, but both of us use Minimal Launcher for the same result - Steam game, No SteamVR with OpenComposite.

*I really only use Ody with VR but it's handy sometimes to fly pancake if I'm just moving my carrier or a bit of Engineering.

HTC VIVE Pro 2 with base stations. Does anyone rate this hmd?
On paper it looks fab.
Is it a pig to setup?
Does it work with steamVR?
Seen as the g2 will no longer be supported (I wasn't aware of this till now) is the pro 2 a worthy successor?

I prefer tethered for elite seen as I'm seated it's not and issue. Is the pro 2 OK as tethered?

Update - Finally bit the bullet and purchased and setup a dedicated wifi 6 router to run ED in Virtual Desktop.

Not a high price bells & whistles one, just a TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 AX3000......but boy! what a relief from all those dreaded error messages I was getting
with the third party data/charging cable (still convinced it's the latest update that's bricked that particular route to PCVR)

Eventually got the router conrrectly configured and working (everything dedicated to the Quest 3 @ 5 Ghz, SSID, channel width etc etc) but was stumped as to why
it was still showing as 2.4Ghz in the headset.....DUH!.....joined the new network in the headset, entered it's password and voila! 5Ghz at 2401 mbps :)

Kept one of the data/charging cables just in case Meta eventually fix the probleme but to be honest the performance and clarity in VD is fanatastic!

Thanks DeckerSolo for inspring me to follow your lead on using a dedicated router and VD for ED. You were right all along :)

(on a side note.....set the VD Streamer to VDXR and starting the game in VD from a desktop shortcut pointing to my Steam installation of ED but still not got the OpenXR tools to pop up when I press my relevant hotkeys for it  )

Cheers all for your advice
Bob

@bobtuck I'm glad to see you have got things working to your liking.
Looks like you have a better stream rate than me, I've only got 866mps to headset (probably because other things are using my 5GHz network).
Have you got both the OpenComposite Runtime Switcher app and the OpenXR Toolkit apps installed?
The OpenComposite Runtime Switcher is where you switch between OpenComposite (OpenXR) or SteamVR to run when you launch ED from your desktop.
OpenXR Toolkit give you various "in headset" options.

....well shiver me timbers! Minimised as much as I could, the game start up, managed to get the OpenXR tool pop up (so it's working) and like you @DeckerSolo I have only 'Turbo' selected and guess what? I actually prefer it running through Steam (along with SteamVR popping up too.....so obviously no OpenComposite)

Probably subjective and differs from system to system but to my eyes the latter looks a little sharper with a tadge more clarity. Go figure!

I have VDXR selected in VD as well as the AV1 10-bit (Quest 3) Running on....

Windows 11
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core Processor @ 4.2Ghz
32GB Vengence 6000Mhz ram
1TB Crucial T700 Heatsink, M.2 (2280) PCIe 5.0 (x4) NVMe SSD and
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

.....spot the weak link ;)
