Newcomer / Intro Question about Engineers

Hi all,

So I have just started to embark on a new journey in material gatherings and engineering. I am currently at Dav's Hope doing my grinds.

I have a question - Can I jump straight to G4 or G5 upgrades or do I have to go through any ladering? (i.e - G1, G2, G3...in a sequential flow). I have already achieved the necessary rep with my engineer to G5.

Thanks!

You have to go through each stage (G1 to G2). The first time you do this for each engineer it will take quite a few materials, but once you gain reputation with them it will be quicker (most G1 'rolls' will only take 1 or 2 turns ).

Also, Dav's hope is ok, but Exigeous has the most efficient way to gather all materials though.

Funnily enough, I have no qualms about relogging for Dav's or Jameson etc but the task kill and restart for HGEs is an exploit too far for me (the quit to menu and restart as in the video was stopped by F D I believe).

Efficient = Grinding

Why is a new player 'doing my grinds' instead of just enjoying the game?

Its a game, play it and ignore the YT vids til you've got 500hrs in, youll have a lot more fun and still do what you want, all youre doing is racing to a point where you burn yourself out and blame the game and missing the point of the game as well.

Your Question, you have to upgrade through each level until the next level is unlocked with that Engineer, dont have to fully complete level 2 to unlock level 3 and one level 3 will complete level 2 at the same time. If taking a Level 3 to a new Engineer to upgrade to 5 you may have to start again at 1 or buy a new module, upgrade that to 3 and then do the one you want to 5.

The vanilla module or weapon starts at level 1 always until engineered.

If changing the engineering Rapid Fire to Long Range for example, will need to start at level 1 again and will permanently lose all 'memory' of RF to will have to start at 1 again if switching back.

New players have just as good a sense how much work they need to put into a game to get anywhere. If it's too much they'll look for ways to shorten that overhead or don't start playing at all.

Hi all,

Thanks for the helpful replies. I am actually not a new player - been playing ED since 2015 - just never got around to Engineering and Material gathering over the last few years. Spent most of my time saving up $$$.

Hi all - just a quick question regarding material trading - is there any "trader chart" that shows the conversion rates for materials?

Also any good places to get G4/G5 raw mats?

Crystalline needle deposits some 1KLY outside the bubble (can't remember the systems but someone will), the crashed anacondas.

The trader shows you the conversion rate. Trade sideways within a level is 6:1, Trade vertically up a level is 6:1, so up two levels is 36:1. Trade up one level and sideways is 36:1. Trade down one level is 1:2, so one down and sideways is 3:1, etc.

It's a good time for mining. You pick up a lot of grade 1 and 2 mats plus a few grade 3, and you fill up after a couple of trips, so you can trade up, I filled up my entire raw mats like that, but it took a couple of months.

Hi all,

Slightly related topic - I am having issues trying to fire my turrent guns on my SRV. It keeps saying incorrect cockpit mode (see screenshots). Despite binding the key under mode switches control setting (J5 is the key I bound it to), the issue is still there. I have attached two screenshots to depict this.

I am getting the same error even after going into my turret mode (second screenshot).

Any idea what's wrong?

Been to Dav's once. Got annoyed by about 5 loops.
Never been back. I get all my resources by gathering as I go, with the occassional trade up when I get full.
Raw Mats are the only thing you cant really get without purposfully spending time doing something non game (grind)

\you don't need to task kill; you just restart the game client in the normal way.

hi all so I found out what the problem was... there is cockpit switch mode for SHIP and for SRV and both are separate keys! Anyway, I managed to resolve it and I am all good now! Time to farm some raw mats!

Also, dav's hope is still spawning good stuff in case some people are still wondering.
