Question about how things work around here

All the time I see people who come in here, start throwing around demands, dictating to the developers like they're disobedient children, moaning about how terrible the game is now and how it should be, then let it slip somewhere that "I haven't played the game in awhile, but..."

My question is, is this SOP around here, and does anyone else think it's odd?

Its a universal principle: the happy majority has just no reason to post at all.

The dissatisfied minory who are discontent with everything whine. The one that complain the loudest make an unproportional impression to the many non posting readers on the forums.

Social media per definition skew the reality of opinions.

You see the same generic complaints on most if not all gaming forums:-

- The game's broken
- The game's dying
- The devs are incompetent
- etc.

Rinse and repeat.

Game forums are game forums.

You forgot the classic (although it mostly works in subscription-based games):
If you don't implement feature X me and my 50 buddies (each with 4+ accounts) will leave.

On my less nice days when I see one of those, I'm reminded of that line from Full Metal Jacket, "Are you quitting on me? Then quit, you slimy [REDACTED] walrus looking piece of [REDACTED]! Get the [REDACTED] off my obstacle!"

Reminds me of the people who threaten to move to Canada after an election doesn't go their way, and then, to my disappointment, never do.

I havent played since yesterday, but when i do get the urge to play i usually just browse the forums till the urge passes. Big time saver.

Indeed they are. I visited the forums for Subnautica, and they apparently deal with the same exact issues from a disproportionately vocal minority of players.

Hmmm... the same (non-)players, by any chance? If the Subnautica forums are set up like this forum here, you don't need to play the game or even own it in order to complain.

Apparently this game is still die to die because of No Mans Sky so it's pointless complaining...it's gonna die any minute now....aannyyyyy minute

*cough*

This principle can be recreated on a basic level with a little baby and a decibel meter: Compare measurement of happy baby vs unhappy baby.

It's the same on every game forum I've ever been a part of.

With Elite the complaints are a lot more justified. The common message is ships and universe great but gameplay bad.

I think Frontier should create a website where people can upvote their suggestions so we can clearly see what's supported and what is not.

Aren't those number vocal enough?
Thing is, in addition to vocal "minority", some people just leave the game without saying a word.
It's just that ED have no real competitors people try to change the game from the inside, and more than in other games.
If all some people want to say is "What are you doing in my swamp?!", then I suggest they should personaly moneyback everyone who does not agree with the state of things.

Also this game works perfectly with the forum as complementory past-time to alt-tab while travelling or waiting for loading screens. This gives lot of opportunity to post something more or less (un)reflected.

That's how it works for me. I bet time spent in the browser and time spent actually in game are pretty much 50/50 for me.

Yeah, it is on a lot of them. Thankfully (?) the teams that create games know this :)

There do seem to be a lot of smart people with a lot of good ideas on this forum though who present those ideas in a constructive way. Smart people offering ideas is good for everyone, if nothing else it gets people thinking.

There is certainly no shortage of people causing toystorms though :D

It's easy to filter out the noise but complaining about imaginary problems for no apparent reason isn't going to help encourage new players who might not have their gaming forum winge filter tuned in very well.
