Question about release date

though it may not go down so well with those who have backed it, that remains irrelevant as we have already given our money to FD, but that's the thing, they can tell us that the game is not ready for release and I'm sure the community will say
" not a problem I want Elite to be the best game ever and if it takes another 6 months then so be it".

we wont know until FD begin their marketing campaign, I would think that if FD doesn't start their marketing campaign between November 2013 and January 2014 then we could be looking at a September launch.

What I meant was.....If the game was delayed because of tech issues im sure everyone will say no problem....

However...If the game is ready but Deliberatly withheld for 6 months for the anniversary then there are some that will kick off

Actually this isn't even an issue at the moment....So far there has been no hint of any delay that im aware of ?
Have I missed something ?

sure but if FD said we are delaying launch for technical reasons would you think back to this thread.

don't forget im just being a Devil's advocate and none of this may actually happen, an Easter launch is just as good as a sept launch, it could be that March launch will actually happen and that a September expansion pack will mark the 30th anniversary.

It wouldn't seem like good business sense to wait for the actual anniversary to launch - they could always use the term '30th Anniversary Year' if they really wanted to trade on the game's history. Sitting on a product for six months, with each month delayed bringing you closer to the release of a competing product, though... I hope and trust the business brains running Frontier are smarter than that.

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here. Yes September marks the 30th anniversary, but David I would guess, would rather celebrate it with something like an in game event and perhaps an intensive advertising campaign for new sign ups to join us all here. After all, he wants to get the game out to us all as soon as he can and that's where those people who pledged at the Alpha, Beta and DDF access levels come in: to help track down the last of any remaining bugs. There is evidence for this in the form of holding back the planetary landings so that it doesn't unduly delay the release of the main game. That says to me at least that he is keeping a watchful eye on the release date. And yes, "some" slippage "could" occur, that's the nature of game development (sometimes you hit snags), but right now there is no indication of this from Frontier. I say relax everyone and lets wait and see. ;)

I'm not saying Its going to happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if FD were to say that a further 6 months development was needed.

I think any delays will be due to the software itself and not any convoluted plan to delay until an anniversary that could easily be celebrated at any point in the year as opposed to an exact date ... It has been (nearly) 30 years since the release of the original, I don't think too many people are thinking about the actual "Birth" of Elite ... just that it came out in '84..

But saying that I doubt we will get a march release date...

1. The game isn't delayed, as far as we the population know.
2. I've pointed this fact out several times over the past (erm, it's august, the kickstarter was last year, carry the one, take of my socks ..... I've got two kids) 9 months, that a delay until the 30th anniversary would be good. Nothing has ever changed the current release date of April 2014.

If it is delayed, I don't care. I'd rather it late and working than early (or on time) and broken. Games released broken get a bad reputation and can keep it for years. Even well after it's been fixed.

Elite 4 has been coming since last millenium, another 6 months won't kill anyone but it might give Frontier's stock holders some heart palpatations. I don't care about them and Frontier should ignore them as well. If you always pander solely to your stock holders short term interests you just get crap products.

Quite the opposite in fact - they'd specifically come out and said that the game is on track for its intended release date.

They're not going to delay the game 'just because....'

It'll only be delayed 6 months to that date if its not ready yet....

Maybe they'll do a soft launch for all the kickstarter pledgers in March and a big campaign to push it the public around the anniversary date ?

The game was released 30 years ago, the month doesn't matter, it was 1984 and it will be 2014. 30 years. 6 months won't change that. Technically 29 years 6 months, but honestly only a few will really care and those that do and say hey you are 6 months off, please by all means, hold on and not play for 6 months. I will play day one.

The adds could say in 1984 Elite was released and now 30 years later 2014, Elite Dangerous follows in it's ground breaking foot prints with this release. etc... I see 30 years and sure the month is off, but unless released the exact same day it will be 29 years and 364 days or 30 years and one day. I don't see a lot of people worrying over it, but only a select few.

The you waited 30 years what is 6 more months? It is another half of a year and unless for technical reasons, it should not be delayed. Also it is 6 more months of money going out and none in as they are not selling the game to the public. That is not a good business strategy if the game is ready.

Nostalgia is fine, but very few even remember the release year and fewer still remember the release date without looking it up. The hard core fans will, and those that read these forums know as they see it all over 1984, but September? I didn't remember till I read it here. This is the 30th year regardless of the month. If it is ready release it in March, if it needs a month or 2 then it takes a month or two more. To delay till September would really upset a lot of fans to who even a month delay would be heart breaking let alone a full 6 months, just to make some fans happy for an anniversary release, if that is the only reason.

Also as a side note there was another thread about the release date months ago and they said the game was on track for a March release at that time. I heard nothing since to doubt their word.

Who knows guys but I've heard and read nothing of any delays. Would rather just wait for any concrete information and, as has been said above, if it was delayed to make the game more complete/rich, stable etc I'm more than happy with that.

If they delayed the release of the game, they should warn well in advance, the participants at the launch party.

Do you think that Frontier can "play" on the release date of ED, to avoid conflict with the release date of SC?

Michael has already posted in a similar delay? thread that everything is schedule.

I see no reason for any delay now. If they had wanted to release on the 30th anniversary they would have just said that would have been the release date in the first place.

Honestly, another thread on this? They've already (recently) said they're still on target for the original dates... personally, considering how much is still being discussed it seems like a hell of a lot to go still. I wouldn't be surprised to see slippage, but I cannot see an artificial delay just to hit to EXACT 30th anniversary as they could still use "30th anniversary year" as a marketing tag if they want.

Can this be the last thread thread on this until the alpha date, please?

I agree with Jabokai, if there were obvious problems they'd have said so. But in fact they've said the opposite. Technical problems aside, lunching on the actual point of the 20 year anniversary vs lunching in the 30th year, is just not worth splitting hairs over. David new well in advance when the anniversary was, so releasing it in time for that, could always have been an option. But that they timetabled to release in March, suggests that they won't delay for any other reason that a technical one.

Stop fretting, it'll come out when its done.

I think the phrase I am after is "Whoah hold your horses there Nelly" :)

Speculation and speculation upon speculation is not really helpful but can make for some interesting discussion. If we look at the FACTS we have a statements from Frontier saying everything is on track so if we accept this then it is what it is. Anything else is a guess and we all know how things like this start before you know it people are convinced there is a delay eg "Say did you hear Elite is getting delayed".....and to quote Ambassador Kosh "...and so it begins......"

Sure it will be ELITE 30th Anniversary in Sept 2014. Kickstarter gave a March 2014 date so what do you think would look good for the Frontier ?

Yes exactly....you got it....... A release as forcast in March and some celebration for the 30th.

Delaying for the 30th does not make a good deal of business sense considering the KS campaign as others have eluded it is MORE reasonable to think there will be some kind of special, celebration or some other surprise on the cards.

So if we stick to what we know we will be fine. Sure delays can happen but there is zero evidence so far. We will see more progress when the Alpha and Beta comes out. People wll then be in a far better position to make some points based on more tangible evidence. :)

So long as we all keep a clear perspective, look at the facts we will all be fine. :)

Alpha and Beta are not too far away remember ? :)

...you got it....... A release as forcast in March and some celebration for the 30th

I think this makes sense. Release the vanilla E D as planned in March (as long as ready ;) ) and then the 1st official update is 6 months hence to tie in with walking on stations/planets etc and a huge party on Founders world!
