Question about taking over a system

Our player faction won it's first civil war and we are now sitting at second place, influence wise.
The main faction still has a much higher influence and the other factions that own stations as well are more than 7% below us.

If I understand it correctly, we have to be within 3% of influence in order to start a civil war, does that mean that we have to push those other factions up in order to take over their assets?

Also, we are an anarchy faction, so no elections for us I believe.

You have to exactly match influence to start a conflict, but it will "catch" if you go too far. And yes, you'll have to push them up. Or, if their assets aren't very interesting, just let them keep them and push for the main faction.

As a follow up, when we push another faction owning stations up to our influence level, is there a way to make sure that the objective of the civil war is one of their stations?
I would hate to fight a war over a station we already own...

If both sides in a conflict own a station, both must stake one in the war. So if you win you get their station, and if you lose they get your station.

(And if a faction owns the controlling station, it must defend that one)

Once you're in control of a System and go into a conflict, the one you'll have to defend will always be the one controlling the System. So if you want to take over everything, you literally put everything on the line each time.

The other side will place one of theirs on the line. Which one is picked can be kind of random and depend on quite a few factors. However (at least in our part of the Galaxy) first everything in Space was taken before ground Ports became a thing to take over.

But as said that can differ depending on the System.

In my experience, the worst available asset comes up for grab during a conflict, unless it's for the system, in which case it's the best. I'm sure you tend to capture ground bases and the like first and only get to outposts later.

Yeah seems like it. First asset we got was the planetary base that was furthest away from the main star :)

Generally it is the most valuable asset that's at stake - which puts surface ports often ahead of outposts. But ruling stations can be different as unless there are no orbital stations at all, ruling stations are orbital, rather than surface-based. (Probably legacy from pre-Horizons and before surface ports even were a thing)

After 3.3 the faction status screen will show which assets are at stake, though.
