Question for Beta players... Chieftain miner?

Will the Chieftain make a good miner?

If it's doesn't, just thought that I'd pop my little bubble of hope now rather than being disappointed later. :p

Doesn't have enough compartments, two size 5 and some smaller. Better stick with Clipper Miner in this price bracket IMHO.

It's more designed around combat as 3 internals are military only.

It doesn't have many general purpose slots. I basically put shields, a fuel scoop, and a advanced scanner in one and I was down to two small slots remaining. Reminded me of a Vulture. IMO it's pretty much worthless outside of being a pew-pew ship, which is apparently what FD wanted.

If you fit mining lasers to all the hardpoints it'd cut through an asteroid like butter, but you wouldn't be able to do much else. Three of its internals are military so you couldn't have a refinery, limpet controller or limpets in those. The remaining optional slots are 5,5,4,2,2 so once you've got a shield, refinery and a couple of controllers in there there's nothing left for storage. I guess you could forego the shield and hull tank it through the military slots, but it's still not a great choice. I might try it in the beta for a laugh.

It's kinda disappointing since I had painted the hopeful picture of the Chieftain being some competition for the Python... oh well, the bubble is burst.

Thanks for the info guys... I'll just stick with the Python. :)

The drawbacks of the Chieftain modules are similar to the Federal Gunship. You may want to choose a ship based on its physical attraction, but the design of the ship forces you into a specific play. Neither ship can fit an optimal role outside their intended purpose.

Though IMO it would be nice to tear down those barriers. Having more diversity and choice is never a bad thing.

With the number of internal slots it has, I'd be amazed if there's ever a medium ship that's a better miner than the Python.

I tried it. It wasn't a laugh, it was awkward. I'm not even going to bother uploading the video, the memories are too painful.

Out of the box the Chieftain is a perfectly fine mid-tier combat ship or mission runner / bounty hunter, basically any role where HRPs or SCBs might be useful to offset compromises elsewhere. As others have suggested in other threads, it might also be good for wing-based anti-Thargoid operations. I'm strictly PVE, but based on video evidence with some Engineering love it might even find a niche role in PVP. The weapons convergence is great and it's pretty good at power and heat management.

But it's no miner, trust me.

Isn't it the point though that there are 'horses for courses'? The Chieftain was built Lore-wise as an anti-thargoid warship. Seems to me that folk are welcome to choose one of the many diverse ships to fulfill a different role.

I believe we need more role specialization not less. Not every ship should be able to do everything with the only difference being the shell design.

IMO the Faulcon DeLacy multi-role spine is fine the way it is.
