Question for Beta players... Chieftain miner?

It's kinda disappointing since I had painted the hopeful picture of the Chieftain being some competition for the Python... oh well, the bubble is burst.

Thanks for the info guys... I'll just stick with the Python. :)

Maybe read some topics instead of guessing. It was always known to be the size of an Asp or FAS and aimed towards combat. How would it ever be a replacement for the Python?

If you had installed the beta and played for five minutes you woyld have seen for yourself. And unless you get godrolls on all your modules, you are better off with the new system, so sounds like you enjoy wasting time instead of looking things up.

Will the Chieftain make a good miner?

If it's doesn't, just thought that I'd pop my little bubble of hope now rather than being disappointed later. :p

The lack of cargo space is going to bite you fast! (No room for cargo + Limpets)

Couple that with the inability to add a very large refinery (5 Slots are the max and there are only 2 of them) and I would give it a big fat THUMBS DOWN for mining.

Its too bad since the weapons placement would make it ideal for multiple mining lasers in the two Class 3 slots.

If you're shopping for a miner the Imp Clipper is pretty popular. It doesn't need to be A-rated like mine. Base cost at 22 mil which may be similar to the Chieftain if it stays around 18 mil. Unfortunately one needs to be Empire Baron to purchase it.

If you don't mind 40 tons shieldless, I suppose you could.
It's a Federal Assault Ship with an extra class 4 military slot and better hardpoint placement.

If you're serious about mining, save up, buy the Type-9, soon with additional Class 8 slot.

My own Type-9 miner hauls 640 tons and is FULLY outfitted for mining, and does a lovely job of it. It even supports Multi-crew mining, which can make an all-day task of using up 640 limpets far more interesting.

These long overdue buffs to the old "Cow" will most definitely make it an even better miner than it already was. :)

Personally, I am a big fan of using a Corvette for mining, although I haven't taken my mining version out of the hangar in ages. But of course, the Vette being a heavily rank locked ship, it isn't something everyone can buy.

Once you Type-9 Mine, you'll leave everything else behind.

Except maybe the Python miner... but only if you're selling at an Outpost.

I've tried them all - even a Beluga, which is fun, but... in terms of raw efficiency, the Type-9 hands down.

Sure, the Type-10 has all those pretty hardpoints, but.. you're there to mine, not wage a private war with the dingleberries of the galaxy.

You don't crop dust with a 747. You don't troop-transport in a Cessna-174.

The Chieftain is not really suitable mining due the low number of optional modules slots and cargo space, it's currently a pure combat ship unless FDev decide to change things. There are better options at the same price range.

I've seen a few cmdrs mine with the chieftain in beta. Honestly it seemed a waste, like mining with a fed gunship or something.

I go with the T-10 since it quite manoeuvrable in normal space compared the the T-9.

When the Type-10 came out, I grabbed one and engineered it to get a little more maneuverability, but it's a little sluggish for my tastes. It's likely super for bulk mining, but it just didn't fit me as I usually do mining missions and most of the time for two specific materials, so I don't really need a huge capacity and the Python's agility and speed suits me better... just had hopes for another medium "do all" alternative.

I'll still probably end up with a Chieftain at some point... just not for mining. :)

It's a mining ship, not a ballet dancer.

My Type-9 hits a massive 70 in normal space, full throttle. I can push it all the way to 72 if use the forward thrusters while I move.

It feels like I'm flying a full-sized mining operation around... oh, wait, I am flying a full-sized mining operation around.

And with 640 Tons of space inside, 5 Collectors, 2 Prospectors and even a Repair Limpet (for those times I try to squeeze between rocks and it's doesn't go as planned).

It's a glorious sight to behold!

And for mining? Two turret-mounted medium mining lasers, 2 fixed Mining Lances.

And before you say "You don't need that many mining beams...", yes I do, and here's why:

1. Multi-crew. One person can man the turrets, I can use the lances, and we can strip two rocks at a time.

2. Mining Lasers have a 500m range. Mining Lances have a 2 km range. My prospectors are good up to around 3 km, so I can scout my rocks, close in on the one(s) I want, start stripping with the lances, and by the time I'm within 500 m, I've got that rock down to around 50%. If I use both together, it is actually faster than just the medium beams or the lances alone, but it does build heat pretty fast - of course, that last 50% is usually stripped off before I actually overheat.
