Question for kickstarter backers

The minimum fee to get all expansions at kickstarter was £80.
I joined at the mercenary edition stage and I have paid for Horizons, i didn't buy the second chance one off payment for all expansions for reasons. I will buy the next expansion if I'm still gaming by the time it comes out and at that point I will have paid out more than a lot of kickstarters (I'm not including all the other cosmetic stuff I brought because I'm sure lots of others have spent a bit on that too).

Anyway, will you still feel that you are owed more than the rest of us plebs when you are not contributing to the development costs?

Yup, I totally get that Mr Ant but on the flip side, without everyone else paying for the expansions the game won't develop very far

And I don't have a problem with kickstarters getting them for free, it's just the regular posts about I paid a nominal amount and now I'm entitled

Not a backer but after getting base game and horizons I have then bought a heck of a lot of cosmetic luxury non essential items, like a HOTAS, head look contraption, as well as numerous skins, laser colours and decals. I haven't added that up, just in case a copy of this post is sent to my wife!

Strangely not any beta access, as my game time is limited and I want to retain my progression, paltry and slow that it is.

I don't feel entitled, maybe some backers have some warped sense of "without me this game wouldn't be here" attitude?

I don't think thus is anyway the majority, as I think 90% of backers just play the game and don't bother with forums, Reddit or the faecesbook stuff, too busy buffing their Condas! :)

I backed on day 2 of the Kickstarter to founders level (£150) and would have backed further but was banned from doing so by my wife.

Am I happy with the game? Yes, it has been the only game I have played since it launched. Are there parts I would change/improve? Yes, I have ideas but that's for another time. Do I feel I am owed more than late adopters? No! Kickstarter is a funding pledge, that is all. I am now a customer like everyone else - yes I have Founders World access without being Elite and I have the physical collectors edition with map, polo shirt, etc.

I paid £150 to see Elite 4 come to fruition. That is in progress and I am happy with how it is going.

Some pledged far more than £80.

Less than 6,000 of the 25,681 Kickstarter backers pledged at a level that included expansions (don't know how many backed to that level in the Backer's App though - it ran from about the end of the Kickstarter until just before the launch of Alpha). Even if another 6,000 backed in the Backer's App to the level that includes expansions that would only make 12,000 - out of well over a million sales....

Who knows how many bought the LEP for £35 (the first time round, available until 29th July 2014) or for £130 the second time round.

I bought the Mercenary Edition just before release (1 day to be exact). I never even use those skins, but then I bought the Lifetime Expansion Pass about a year later. Totally, super happy I did. Best game currently (only original Halo is better...)

FWIW!

I get this, Kickstarter was a long time ago now, it grates when you hear "I am a backer and...."

FWIW I am a backer. (and?)

Yep. When I see comments like that they go straight on my ignore list. The "Founders in lockdown" thread increased my ignore list by an incredible amount. ;)

Backer here too.

Ok, the website states funds were a little shy of 1.5mil so on average the 6,000 may have paid about £140? (I think that's a pretty generous figure), lifetime pass plus a load of other stuff including pushing their agenda.
Money well spent but still won't mean a thing without lots of others paying for the expansions

I pledged £40 for kickstarter and paid £35 for LEP.. Never felt felt I was owed anything other than the game being developed..

.. as it turned out I got amazing value for money :)

Maybe I have missed something but what makes you think we are all so self entitled?

I backed at Alpha level during KS, so £200 I was unable to play from week 2 of general release until late Dec 2016. So missed on on 2 years of game play.

I have some nice founder decals, a few permits, acess to the private forums which are dead and for some reason aload of black paint jobs for every ship I buy; oh and beta access for update which I dont use.

I have also bought about 4 copys of the game for others and some cosmetic stuff from store so have continued to support the project.

I dont expect anything else, I paid for ED and all the expansions as a show of faith in a game I loved as a kid is all. At the time I didnt even know how many expansions were planned and still dont. Anything else Frontier sends my way (eg the black skins?) I see as a bonus and certinaly do not feel either entitled to or expect.

So my original question do I sound the least bit self entitled? :)

Edit: just seen forum thread you are referring to, given my answer here I think its obvious I really dont care! Very early on I seem to recall cosmetic extras avaliabe in the store for ££ we had to pay then so that seems like the score was clear early on with reguard to such items.

I was something similar but tbh it was so long ago I can't remember what I paid but your figures seem about right. I do feel like I have cheated FD though with how much value I have got from my megre outlay, more so when all future expansions are free. To this end I do buy stuff from the store and I bought a second account with horizons when season 2 was released.

Engineers will prevent me buying a third account for me at S3 but I will buy one and gift it away on a mates stream. I don't really feel I'm owed anything from FD having paid around 5p an hour for the game so far, a figure that is dropping constantly. I still criticise them for stupid things though [haha]

Beta Cmdr here.
For us Beta guys the choice was easy, we KNEW, there wa going to be a game...
The Kickstarters did not know that for sure.
I do not envy them, they took a chance and it paid off well.
I took a chance and Elite Dangerous has been my best investment in gaming EVAAAR !
3200 hours for a 100 quid, Dat is a gi' me!

Cheers Cmdr's

I'm a backer, 3 accounts, 2 arms and 2 legs and all that other inconsequential jazz.

I'm not owed anything other than access to play the game FD makes - that's what I paid for, not some kind of creative control. I signed up to their vision not some kind of scheme where I pay x amount and they make (specifically) my personal space opera dreams come true, although as it happens their vision of space future funk heavily overlaps with mine so it's all good. All I expect is continued access at the levels I paid for on the various accounts.

Unless you are setting the scene for some kind of anecdote/superficial purpose even bringing up being a backer as preamble to expressing an opinon (as though it adds weight to it somehow) is not cricket really.

Missed KS but Premium Beta here, but with a 2nd account I have paid for Horizons on so still contributing.

Only got Sol permit for PB, LEP, beta access, the black paint jobs, free eagle with pirate paint and decal and access to cobra IV. Best thing was buying wire framed cobra.

The only thing I would want to do is transfer the Cobra IV to my 2nd account as I'm not going to fly anything other than a cobra on that account. Fancy seeing how far I can get 1984 style again.

Comments like this are a bit disappointing frankly. All I feel I am owed is what I paid for as per terms of the KS pitch and agreement. Nor have I ever detected any sense of superiority or entitlement from early backers, unless expecting to receive what was paid for is considered so.

Looking back the £80 level now seems like a very good deal (several years down the line with hindsight), yet many folks paid way more mostly to help the project get past its funding goal, which was looking unlikely for a time. This was of course in the face of a much more polished and professional pitch from Chris Roberts and Star Citizen.

Folks who've bought the game in the sales have gotten it pretty cheap too and haven't had to put up with Frontier reneging on the things they promised backers. If I could go back in time, I'd simply prefer to have bought the game at release, or gotten it dirt cheap in the sales. I'd have saved myself a lot of frustration if I done so.

In this case the grass is not greener on the other side.
