Question for mouse & keyboard lords.

I've recently got back into using mouse & keyboard, mostly for comfort reasons.

But I'm a bit of a scrub in combat flying on this input, and I would just like to politely ask how you have your controls set up?

Right now I'm basically using default ship controls.

WASD = thrust and roll
Q E = lateral thrust
Tab is still boost
Shift WASD = Pips
Z C = Pitch, mostly for supercruising with relative mouse, but comes in handy for pitching while using a menu in combat
X = stop
Ctrl and space = thrust down and up
R and shift = targets
F and shift = enemies
V = Target in front
T and G = heat sink and SCB
B and N = subsystems
F1 - F4 = wingman selecting and targeting
Caps lock = FA off, in case mouse hand is too busy
\, the one above return = landing gear because thrust down + L makes a server bookmark, probably annoying for Fdev
U = hardpoints
J and K = Super and jump
O = nav target
Numpad = fighter orders and a few random things like orbit lines and camera
Menu navigation is still default
Everything else is still default, I think. Maps, silent running, FSS on F keys.

The rest of the important stuff is on the mouse, but I got one o' those fancy ones with lots of buttons.
Under-the-thumb = firegroup cycle
Other-under-the-thumb = FA off
Other-other-under-the-thumb = 50% throttle
Mousewheel = throttle
Mousewheel click sideways = highest threat
Mousewheel click is still headlook

Can greatly depend on 2 things :
How much you want to use the mouse. If the answer is 'always' then an even spread of keys will do. If its 'sometimes' then you want to pool the keys between the left and right hand.
How much of a ninja you want to be. If that's any answer other than 'nope' then you want your free hand to operate fa off and laterals. So they want to be well grouped for that hand.

I fly kb only. Right hand does roll, yaw, targeting and speed. Left hand does pitch and other ancillary commands, with a fire button each. It's a non ninja setup, thrusters are on numeric keypad, so only used in non combat situations.

Mouse for pitch (fwd/back), yaw (left/right)

Mouse button 1 - primary fire, 2 - secondary fire

Mouse wheel roll back pips to shields, fwd pips to weapons, wheel click reset pips.

I use a Logitech G402 so it has buttons for browser page fwd and back so they're mapped to vertical thrusters up/down

Roll keyboard Q - anti clock, E - clock

Strafe left A, strafe right D

I use the number keys for panel control, FSD, comms etc really down to what suits you best

Thank you guys. I'll give all these a go later when I get on the rig.

Would you recommend turning off mouse acceleration? I've seen this topic crop up.

Couldn't find mouse acceleration in windows settings but my mouse does have multiple sensitivity settings that can be adjusted on the fly (very useful for agile ships with fixed weapons)

I really couldn't tell with any degree of accuracy. But I think I use pretty close to a default setup, with a few additional bindings.

I know my mouse is still pitch and roll, though I've been playing with some alternate setups lately.

What kind of sensitivity are you using? Mine too is adjustable.

I've also read about deadzones. Anything I should know?

I think you are good to go after swapping roll and yaw from initial presets, turning relative mouse on, and turning sensitivity somewhere around 50%. I prefer controlling main thruster with thumb, from "space" and "alt" buttons, but this could be a wrong decision. "Windows button" plucked away. Couldn't find mouse acceleration either, maybe such thing no longer exists. My new "stick" is Logitech G502, it has a button for changing DPI settings. It's like changing flight assist off when no flight assist was turned on in the first place. No point playing with a mouse if it isn't flight assist off. In a way this is starting all over again, squeezing everything from this game. But there are also flashy LED light options so its okay.

I'm aware of the challenge. I'd like to git gud at fa-off so that's part of the motivation.

But yeah, re-wiring my brain is tricky. :D

It's hard to make a recommendation. Personally, I turn it off because I prefer the sensitivity to be consistent, but I've read that professional FPS competitors tend to use it. Makes moving that 1 or 2 pixels to get the perfect rail shot easier, but I find it makes moving 10 or 20 pixels feel awkward and I overshoot. Much of a muchness I s'pose.
