Question for other Xbox One X users.

I got an answer from FD support.

They think the fan spinnes up so much because I run 4K on a 1080p tv, I still don't have a 4K tv..
Because the 4K rendering takes quite some power and the fact that all that stuff needs to be supersampled to 1080p the workload on the Xbox is much higher thus generating more heat.
When running in native 4K on a 4K tv the workload is lower since it doesn't have to supersampled to 1080p first.

I noticed the loud fan spinning somewhere after the release of 3.0 though not directly after I bought the One X, plus ED is the only game that causes this so support advised me to consider making a bug report.
Maybe some optimization needs to be performed here.

Right now I swittched to 1080p quality settings and the Xbox is very quiet.
I'll make a bug report.

I used to run my 1X on a 1080p TV with ED in 4K "quality" mode without any fan issues.

Have had the fan kick in recently, though. I'm assuming that's down to the ambient temperature (around 30C)

My Xbox didn't spin up so loudly either at first, I noticed this the last couple weeks.
ED is the only game causing this though, no other 4K game does this.
Maybe ED needs some optimization after 3.0 or so.

The noise level of the Xbox One X depends on the room temperature as well. It's summertime. It's possible that it's much hotter in most of your rooms than even a short time ago. Sadly, the Xbox One X struggles with 4K games and it really spins up the cooling fan when it gets hot. I noticed that even a few degrees matter. At 27 (C) it's completely fine but as soon as the room temperature goes up 1.5-2 degrees it gets loud. Unfortunately I don't have AC installed and the Sun shines into my room half the day so it's not rare to have 30-33 degrees for extended periods of time. The Xbox One X spins up because of the temperature and the intensive graphics combined. And yes, it can be so loud that it's distracting. It works as intended, though, I just bet Microsoft never tested the console above 25-26 degrees.

Yup, used to experience that in our prior house with my gaming pc.
Our current house has climate controll though and the Xbox is in our living room where it's mostly the coolest.

It's not just you. The fan on my XB1X kicks into overdrive when I enter a station to the point that if I'm going to be a while, I descend into the hangar to try and calm it down. I use the 4K quality settings on a 4K TV.

Elite is one of the few, if not only, games to do this.

There are many games like this. Even smaller titles can do it if they use 4K graphics. A few months ago I tried the game "Nine Parchments". It's a top-down view adventure game with amazingly colorful but seemingly simplistic graphics. 4K/60 fps. It made my X mad, I was genuinely worried about the machine. Even funnier is that a lot of games spin up the fan when you go into the pause menu. State of Decay 2 for instance. And there are many, many more, mostly open-world titles. I'm glad Assassin's Creed Odyssey will arrive only in October, it will hopefully be cooler than it is now.

I finally got a 4K TV yesterday, so changed ED from 1080p/Quality to 4K/Quality.

The fan was noticeably loud when playing.

Changed to 4K/Performance... Still noisy.

Not tried any other games in 4K yet.

So it seems it's not the supersampling causing this when running 4K on a 1080p tv.
I'm running 1080p now and the Xbox is very quiet, just as quiet as when I'm playing Assassin's Creed Origins 4K supersampled or Ark or any other 4K title.
I thought it to be cool to buy a new Xbox and be able to run ED with better graphics, now I'm still tunning in 1080p unless I tollerate a second vacuum cleaner in the room.

We will eventually but we have some other priorities atm.
When I buy a 4K tv I want a good one that'll last quite a few years, not only for my gaming but also for the rest of the family, movies etc.

well just an FYI, my model is 3yrs old now. 55" Samsung purchased for $650 on Amazon. It's been a solid movie/gaming experience. There are more expensive ones out there, but for the price I really like it.

I'm looking into the new Qled by Samsung.
Preferably a 65 inch with hdr10+ but I'll make a choice when I'm actually going to buy one.
Our summer vacation comes first though and I wrecked my car on the circuit so plenty of things to loose our money on :)
