Question for the VR players...

Much as l hate to say it I'm looking elsewhere. All the current crop are either unfinished or crap.
So I'll fingers x they at least give VR players something to do with odyssey planetfall till they finally roll out a patch with VR working as we all want it too.
I'm still playing and no doubt will continue to do so.
But if another game arrives with the same immersion and flight model as well as virtually bug free and huge, I'll be porting over.
What I wont do is play elite in pancake.
That's the rub. Once you played it in VR it's impossible to go back.
So im in their hands. My cmdrs fate depends on their commitment to VR.

Currently not playing and I think I probably have played for an hour or so in total since the EDO announcement. I tried pancake again and its just not the same. For me this is a confirmation of what I had suspected that FD don't play their game in VR, if they did they would realise the importance of VR. I am actually enjoying the extra hours I have available for other things.

I've only managed to pay ED for a couple of hours since FS 2020 launched. I'm not quitting ED; it's just that I haven't played a flight sim since I had one for the ZX Spectrum in the early eighties, and if you think that the learning curve for ED is steep....

The great attraction of ED for me has always been flying around in VR. I actually pre-ordered FS 2020 on the basis that if I had to fly flatscreen, I might as well have pretty scenery to look at, but having used it for ten days I'm greatly relieved that it will soon have VR*: not only is the flatscreen experience, well, flat, but managing the camera system is a pain in the ejection seat.

As I say, I'm not quitting ED, and I'm even still planning to buy Odyssey, but in flatscreen** it's going to have an uphill struggle for my attention, and Odyssey cosmetic sales really won't be able to compete for my cash against a flight simulator's vast market for functional third-party add-ons.

*Although the publicity has focused on the Reverb G2, the initial VR support is widely reported to be for all WMR headsets, which will include my G1.

**Like many others, I don't give a toss whether legs are VR or flatscreen, but I do want to be able to have VR to fly ships in Odyssey's clearly minimum-effort "tenuous" atmospheres and drive - where remotely practical to do so - ground vehicles in glorious Lookaroundvision.

I think I've logged in twice...

Currently playing MSFS 2020 (in flat screen with head tracker) and did try out ED to see whether it might be Ok like that. Killed one pirate lord, and landed on a planet and jumped in the SRV. It's simply not the same experience for me, not even close.

Honestly, I have played a lot, since premium beta, and even before the VR announcement I was becoming increasingly dispirited doing the same old stuff time and time again. I'm certainly not saying I've done everything there is to do in the game, but there's plenty I'm not interested in, and what I am interested in really hasn't developed much in the last three years, and the thought of repeating yet another pirate lord assassination (they are all exactly the same), or another planetary scan (they are all exactly the same) or another...

Well the only real motivation to log into the game for quite a while has been VR, and since I don't play ED to play an FPS game then Odyssey may well not add anything of interest to me if I cannot at least fly and drive around the new planetary tech in VR. I have the LEP, so if anything changes I can slip back in, but having watched an early livestream, I'm getting a sense of deja vu from when Horizons was released - lots of excitement about finally being able to get the scale of the game (they should try it in VR ;)), about being the first to actually stand on a planet, or to be able to scan plants and sell the data, sounds like nothing we've done before...

Will likely get a new VR setup to play MSFS2020 when that releases in VR (my Rift is old), so if Odyssey does end up supporting VR I'll be able to take a look. If not, I've had a good time with ED, and maybe I'll occasionally log into Horizons when I get an urge to fly one of my 30 lovely spaceships - in VR. :)

After the news dropped I tried playing on desktop for a number of hours (I've been flying exclusively in VR since I started playing). While I can appreciate the graphical fidelity, in all other aspects the game is next to unplayable for me. It feels like driving a car through a dashcam. I honestly did not expect the difference to be that big, and I can definitely say it made me lose most if not all motivation. I still play occasionally, but all my long-term goals have been put on hold indefinitely. I'm currently enjoying other games, and following the Elite news hoping Fdev will come around and let us keep VR support in ships.

Haven't played since selling my Rift. Horizons was becoming boring, so this was the ideal time to upgrade my PC as I do every few years, in order to get it ready for Odyssey in Q4. That has now been delayed until next year. Waiting for the new graphics cards to be announced and G2 on pre-order but they won't be getting used for ED now by the looks of it, or maybe just to test them out in Horizons before moving on. It all depends on what "not at launch" really means for the future VR in Elite Dangerous.

I was demotivated for a while after the EDO announcement, but have picked up again. Won't play EDO except maybe a few short rounds since I get it anyway, and won't get it for my other accounts - no sense having 2 VR computers if you can't play in VR, isn't there?.

I feel betrayed nonetheless, and I am afraid that the trend will continue, not getting EDO, not getting the next expansion, no more updates for VR players. Not being able to play with friends because some parts require the new stuff. I bought a game "made for VR", and I won't be able to justify spending money on it until we have a confirmation that it will stay a game "made for VR".

It is a bit like buying a game for your PC, that you can also play on mobile (not an expert here, but I think fortnite and robloxx support this), but the second expansion only works with the mobile, sorry, no way to play on PC...

I haven't been playing ED since April so the announcement has not changed anything for me. Whether I come back for odyssey or not is hard to say as so far I haven't seen any compelling fun game play that I am interested in.

That's I think the second best analogy I saw on the topic of FDev dropping VR support for Odyssey :)

My VR time is mixed..

It's a pain to break out the rig, clear an area, and shoo the wife/kid out of my hair for a quick hour or so.. If I know I'll have a few hours, then yes, I play in VR. If not, then it's pancake. So I still play in VR, but not as much as I'd like due to non-game related issues.

Do I feel like it's a downgrade not to have the OPTION to play in VR for the new release ? YES. I bought a VR rig to play ED, other uses and games were kind of secondary. Same for my HOTAS. This game takes a step back without VR.

Plenty of other pancake flight sims out there. Or games in general that will be competing for my time in the next few months : Baldurs Gate and Cyberpunk 2077 come to mind.

Do I think I'll play LESS if the new release doesn't have VR ? Probably. It forces me to start making choices before I even fire up the game : Odyssey with no VR, or limited options with VR ? What is the difference in mission types ? If I have to spend a few minutes deciding and planning before I even start the game, plus clearing my desk and setting up my HOTAS.. You know what ? You've crossed a 'hassle' thresh hold. Maybe I'll play something else.

VR is worth the hassle, it's beautiful, as I fly my ship thru an asteroid belt shooting up pirates. Whether I am Luke Skywalker in my Vulture, or Captain Harlock on the bridge of my Vette, I am THERE in VR.

I completely stopped playing ED all of a sudden, partially because of coincidental RL reasons, for the most part because of utter disappointment when the VR premonition was confirmed (to my own greatest astonishment). I did not leave the game, though, but somehow just can't get me up to login again atm and pass my VR time playing DCS and IL-2 instead. And, well, I somehow returned to WoT (which I thought I had left for good 5 years ago when ED came my way), having fun being called names and all in a toxic community again, and I enjoy being really bad at it. So that's where your silly decision finally put me, FD!

My playtime has dropped massively, but to be fair, it's summer too..
As a VR player, it's pretty disappointing.
I would probably hang in there if VR was going to be supported, because I like the game enough to keep playing despite all its bugs. But I mean I wouldn't be playing at all right now if not for VR, flying these ships in VR is just incredibly immersive. Sure you can use head-tracking, but it doesn't give you actual depth perception like VR, and THAT is the part that keeps me coming back, it looks and feels like you ARE sitting in the cockpit.
I don't really get the whole 'we cant do legs for VR' rationale. They say they're looking for ways they could implement that...
huh?
I truly don't see the need to 'bounce' with every step, just make movement fluid, you can play the crunch crunch noise and I'll understand that I'm walking. It shouldn't be that much different than driving the SRV in turret mode, in VR? I already do that, directional movements + mouse to look around, point, and shoot...
If you're really sensitive to VR, you may have to switch to pancake, like you probably already do for the SRV if thats the case?

idk, fingers crossed they decide to do it after release, sooner than later.
