Question from a Newbie

So I am about a week into learning Elite Dangerous and I am playing with an HTC Vive and an X-56 Rhino Set Up. I am starting to get the hang of all of the controls, however, I have run into one, consistent problem that literally kills me every time. I will be in the middle of an intense dogfight, and every time when I need to be the most focused on it, a window appears called "Known Engineers". It is completely blank, takes over my whole view, and I cannot exit. I am then forced to blindly flail around with this giant useless display blocking everything, unable to fire, until I am inevitably killed. What in God's name do I do to stop this... I have tried everything and its completely destroying the experience.

Go into configuration options and find the one that controls what happens when you look at the right hand display (Status I think) and change it to "nothing". Then create your own binding to bring it up (make sure it's something you can't accidentally press too).

You are basically looking at that display, without realising in the heat of the moment, and pressing A and that brings up the Engineers screen.

You could also just get in the habit of making sure that screen is on a different tab so it doesn't do that. Your choice

Ok, so I can see how that is happening. My problem with figuring out how to fix that is that in VR those displays seem to pop up when I look in their general direction. Is there a was to disable that? I also am realizing I have to reach over the POV Hat that controls which window is active to hit one of my weapons groups, but to prevent that I would have to re-bind each window associated to that hat somewhere else to fix the problem. I am not sure how familiar you are with the X-56's setup, but do you, or anyone else have suggestions for a good place to remap all of these?

As I said, there is a setting in Controls that determines what happens when you look at each of the 3 displays. Find it and change it to nothing. Above that you can set keys to bring those up. I would recommend a combination of a button with left/right hats. That button should be something you don't press in a battle
