Engineers question on engineering the heavy duty Shield boosters - wanring, nerdy maths

Can confirm that running g5s on low grade boosters with speed builds is a thing. Going to reiterate that augmented resistance is a flat bonus regardless of booster class (albeit with diminishing returns).

Speed builds with those are fun, aren't they ? :)

FD did a good job enabling these kind of possibilities.

Guess that settles that, no upgrades for you. Seems a shame. I had fun doing all that stuff, and the rewards were more than worth the effort.

Ah I'm kidding really. I'm only just starting out on the journey, getting my Grade 5 multi cannons first. Shield tanking can come later. Shooting stuff hard is more important than surviving.

Generally, if you have a G5 thermal resist on your shield, you'll get the most out of 2 G5 resistance shield boosters and the rest of the boosters should be heavy-duty ones.

Actually, if you use SCB's, three resistant shield boosters + X HD is better. But yeah, absolute value (not by much) is for 2*Res + X*HD
Also, HD boosters on speed builds are a no go if you want to stay above 625 speed with a combat or exploration setup.

I really wish that ED itself helped you out a bit more in the outfitting screens.

And I agree Inara could improve too, but thats someones love child project and not paid-for like ED is, so its exempt from too-harsh criticism :p

Best thread I've found in ages!

Had two HD 0A on my FDL which gave me ~1600MJ (boost 539, jump 18.4)

Swapped them for two HD 0E and my shields are now ~1300MJ but... the power saving allowed me to swap my power plant to a 5A.

I've saved about 25t in weight which means I'm much closer to optimum mass (boost 543, jump 19.4 + feels much more responsive).

I run two G5 resistant A0's on my FDL and two Heavy duty 0Ds on my FDL. On my courier I run two grade 5 heavy duty 0Es. This allows me me to run grade 3 low emission power plant on both ships and the courier even runs grade 5 clean drives on high performance thrusters which is EXTREMELY power hungry. My courier runs ice cold. No heatsink needed even running a rail. I've gotten rolls as good as 47% boost on D boosters.
