Question on pvp, ships and ganking..

Ive heard people mention that pvp in this game is rock, paper, scissors. Is there a ship/build that is faster/ more maneuverable than the typical gank ship and capable of harassing them?

Several ships are pretty good and close to each other, and yes have rock, paper, scissors. Then there is the FdL which can beat everything except probably a good Corvette. That being said there are a couple fdl builds that are better than others but its common knowledge that ship outclasses everything else in pvp, esp in the hands of a good pilot. The issue with it lies firstly in its unusually high shields for a medium ship as well as its speed/maneuverability (all are well above average). Secondly it having a 3sec boost interval, which may not sound important but do some canyon races and you will see how powerful that makes it. It may be the only ship that can actually be in a permanently boosted state (others are typically 5-6second interval and most ships are above 8sec), which means it can change direction very easily and quickly without having to worry as much about drifting too far away as other ships of the same speed. Thirdly for some reason it has 6 utility mounts which gives it even stronger shields and flexibility. And despite all that it has high firepower with a cl4 hardpoint.

Pretty much it outclasses smaller faster, slightly more maneuverable ships by having very close to the same maneuverability yet much higher firepower and shields. It has better shields and maneuverability and a bit better firepower than other medium ships. It is fast and maneuverable enough to have significantly higher ToT when up against large ships, with the Corvette being the hardest matchup because it has better firepower and shields but can pitch very quickly for its size. However a few smaller faster ships can stay mostly out of its targeting if they are piloted really well.

So yea, FdL had the advanced against almost every other ship. You can make a build that specifically works well against the meta fdl, but it probably won't be good against much else.

It's rock, paper, scissors if the skill level is the same only. If whoever you are fighting has a higher skill level even the scissors will not cut the paper. Git gud is the way. Probably by then you will start ganking too.

Surely if you git gud you have no need to gank, you can take on competitive opponents. Ganking is for those who need an ego boost by beating someone who can't fight back.

Fast and maneuverable? iCourier, (I)Eagle, Viper and, somewhat slower, Sidewinder.
Don't bother with guns, though - you won't be able to punch through a typical PvP shield.

Sounds very limiting playstyle wise with such a dominant ship

Get an Imperial Eagle (cheap!). ENG a Med Rail LR/SP, make the IE as fast as possible (YouTube that) toss in a fuel scoop and have fun! 😜 And you did say "harassing" and not killing them. So, this will have an advantage even over the valuated FDL!

Imp Eagles suck for high speed agility btw. Use a Viper, or just a Courier. Courier isn't great at the agility thing, but still way better than the FakeEagle.

Meet me in Pomeche! Ha! My IE will run circles around the Viper! Hmm, looks like you're a NEWTON'S GAMBIT FA/O pilot ... might have to rescind that challenge. FAO is my weak spot :(

Real PvP has nothing to do with ganking. Most of the "gankers" I've found had terrible flying/combat skills, their best tricks were "face rebuy/C Log".

Lol. Believe me, it's the Imp Eagle will be your weak spot. :p
Ship can't accelerate worth a damn.

Try Achelous 8A though! More fun than Pom :)

Edit; Looked at that build you linked. Dude - that's bad. Skimped distro on an Imp Eagle = straight-line only.
Try this instead and you'll get much better agility and overall be faster: http://s.orbis.zone/b3t-

That's it. Once you git gud you have no need to look for easy targets. The reason to go after easy targets is if you haven't gut gud but you want to feel like you have.

If you just want to survive a gank and escape then most ships if G3 engineered and above with decent shields/hull are capable, even a sidey, as long as you know how to evade of course (there are plenty of posts about that). A typical ganker ship has a lot of dps and has to be fast as well, so that usually means FDL, frag Mamba, frag Krait or similar. They don't usually have a lot of thermal weapons, so a class A shield (or ideally a prismatic) with the reinforced mod is certainly a good idea. If you want to kill a ganker you need a fast and mobile ship with good defences. A frag mamba can only do damage from close range and it probably won't have much therm resist on its shields so beams with TC could be effective, plus a grom missile to stop them jumping away. I have also surprised a few with reverb torps, even elite players. If you get ganked by a wing, just jump away, you may still get one of them if they have a badly engineered ship and you have a fully engineered corvette say, but it's probably not a good idea to stay and fight.
