Question~!

What kind of fuel does the ships of the Elite Universe use?

[wacky] According to Elite Dangerous lore, all the systems on your ships are powered by electricity. Yup, nuclear reactor powered electrical spaceships! Those three systems: SYS, ENG and WEP that you allocate power to via the pips settings are electrical capacitors that need recharging as their stored energy is used up. Your ship is sort of like the DeLorean time-machine in the movie Back to the Future that is, the nuclear power plant is simply there to provide (1.21 gigawatts!) electricity, which powers the Frame Shift Drive and all the other modules. The nuclear reactor though, apparently runs on hydrogen plasma which the ships are capable of scooping from the coronas of stars using a fuel-scoop.

Yup.

Yes the power cores are Fussion cores, They heat Hydrogen into a plasma state and then compress it to create fusion converting Hydrogen into Helium. This process creates a 0.7% loss of the mass which is carried away in the form of kinetic energy or other forms of energy, such as electromagnetic radiation. This is harvested by the power core and used to power the ships.

Im fact when the Thargoids attacked the human space stations in the pleiades we got to see inside a powercore. This is a tokamak fusion generator.
The walls are superconducting magnets which twist, compress and spin the plasma at super heated temperatures allowing for fusion to take place.

Deserves a rep. Thanks for the share

I did some testing in my science-winder, measuring fuel consumption in comparison to one and then two mining lasers, which draw a handy 0.5MW each. The ship powerplant supplies 1MJ from 22.2 grams of fuel hydrogen by my reckoning.

I thought they ran on dark matter on Futurama.

Which, as we all know is the end product of digestion from Nibbler.

Hydrogen according to the original lore.
Previous games also had military drives that used some sort of fancy anti-matter containing stuff but we seem to have lost those for this game*.

* Advantage, smaller/lighter drives (so better range). Disadvantage, non-standard expensive fuel that leaves behind radioactive waste.

I'm sure I read about a second drive type fuelled by an alternate energy source/fuel the details of which have been lost due to industrial espionage or something like that.

Also in previous games the military had a separate drive system where spent fuel was highly radio-active waste product.

I'm more a fan of the wonderfully twisted geometry of the stellarator-type reactor's coil design :p

I thought the Power Plant ran using a form of bio methane created by placing baked beans, cabbage, extra strong mints and cola in a bio-digester to fuel the organism and Power Plant. Other ingredients can be added by the organism according to taste.

Personally I'd hope that by then we would have figured out a-nutronic fusion based on the proton-boron (or other) process.
Less radiation and the chance of direct conversion of the emission products to electricity.
Boron is still pretty plentiful so fuel wouldn't typically be a problem, though you can't trump hydrogen for that.

Perhaps a-neutronic for ships, where you could probably save some mass and then use hydrogen for static installations and maybe larger exploration ships?
