Questions about the 500 mining grind for the engineer

Does the 500 tons mined to unlock the engineer have to be collected and sold or can it just be lasered out and left.....I have no inclination for mining and am looking for an easy out

I'm about to start unlocking her, and as I am able to unlock Lei Chung if I hand over 200 tons of gold, I figure I may as well kill two birds with one so will be heading to a pristine ring near Laksak. There's no way I am handing over 1,565,600Cr at will like that.

Maybe worth considering doing the same?

I was also thinking about mining that stuff, but finally i bought the gold at the nearby station

Thought about something like that, too - but then again, I might just as well mine the 3Ps, sell them and buy the gold and a new ship from the results. Or simply participate in a CG (ok, perhaps not this week ) and buy the Gold from there. Mining for Gold is rarely a good use of time (unless, of course, you mine for the relaxation value - like fishing, I suppose).
