Questions for community managers regarding VR

We all already know that VR Development is on pause. My questions to the CM's are simple. 1) Are we to expect that all development around VR is just done and that no more development will be done with vr similar to consoles? 2) Are the devs working on optimization for VR specifically? Reasons is stated below.

The reasons i ask question 2 is because through multiple upgrades, clean installations of windows, and now multiple windows operating systems I am STILL experiencing frame rate drops no matter what I do in the graphics. I've gone out of my way to upgrade to 32GB of DDR5 ram, 3080ti, and an i7-13700kf. Elite is installed on an SSD at this point and I've got a much better vr headset than what I originally started with in elite. I've overclocked my cpu to 5.2GHz, overclocked my GPU a little bit to ensure stability, enabled xmp profile and got my ram going at 6200Mhz and STILL stuttering right now as I write this and I'm sitting on a planet. Even in space while fighting goids, frame rate dies when people use the flak launcher. I am at my wits end here.

VR is no priority, and was originally slated to die with ODY launch.

This may still happen, if you consider FD history of killing support for hardware.

Are you running Windows 11? If yes, then you need to run the following at an elevated command prompt before you start the game.

logman stop HolographicShell -ets

You need to run that command each time after a reboot and with your VR headset plugged in. There's a bug in Windows 11 that results in excessive logging for Windows Mixed Reality and it completely cripples VR performance. That command turns off the problematic issue. It only affects Windows 11, so if you're on Windows 10 this does not apply to you.

There's more details about the issue online if you want to learn more. It transformed a disappointing experience in to one I am happy with.

I'll try this

The only way I run ED is in VR - and- pretty much the ONLY thing I run in VR is ED. For me "ED <=>VR"...

Yes, Odyssey messed up a lot of things in VR. (I have absolutely no interest in space legs or getting out of my ship...)

The biggest issues I have with VR/Odyssey is all the bugginess in its implementation (not frame rate).

The lighting calculated for each eye is often unbalanced to the point where I often have to rotate my ship to reorient the light source (star) in my view to prevent my brain from going nuts trying to determine why the lighting is so inconsistent between my eyes. Also, why do I have text flashed in my face when coming out of SC each and every time?

I will say, my Pimax 8KX headset was doing "OK" with a 3090, lots of memory, a fairly fast i9 and an X299 chipset but I did have to tweak some settings to get decent frame rates in heavily textured scenes (space stations). I recently replaced the 3090 with a 4090 and now I've basically been able to remove a bunch of "compromises" which I had previously applied.

That being said, the graphics implementation in Odyssey is not nearly as good for VR as was the legacy engine. It was definitely a step backward. If you are going to try and run VR in Odyssey, you will want to have some very stout hardware, and be willing to invest some time tweaking, to overcome much of the new graphics overhead we have inherited.

I had always hoped the dev staff would ultimately get around to resolving much of these challenges (and bugs). I'm happy that the Galaxy Map finally works (mostly) in VR. It would be a shame to never see this game reach its full potential in VR just because FDEV doesn't understand how really good it COULD be...

VR never did take off. My finger in the air assessment is too many people suffer from various ailments when using the headsets. This limited the user base to a select few who where dedicated enough to buy the systems required, who invested in the headsets AND (importantly) did not get ill using them. This number it seems, for the behemoth Games Producers was simply not enough. I believe this is why the AAA titles have been so few and far between and why VR development in ED took a back seat. Luckily for me it seems that the particular demographic outlined above quite likes Racing and Flight sim games both of which are very well catered for. ED is also still a very good VR game as long as you stay in your ship or SRV. A few minor gremlins have crept in with Oddy but nothing that cant be ignored for the epic game play.

I am a VR only player in ED, logging over 3000 hours in Horizons 3.8 / V`R.
Sadly now that Horizons 3.8 has had all progress removed from being matched in Odyssey, such as planet/system tags, credits made I have lost interest playing.
I used to play only in Horizons 3.8 knowing that my progress was at least transferred over, now ED just doesn’t get played.

Yes, the one guy that did VR in FDev left the company didn't he?
I don't know...don't keep up with who does what and when. I just think it's funny that FDev has already said, multiple times, that we've got all we're going to get. But the VR crowd is calling that being 'development on pause." 🤷‍♂️

Have they said that? Typically they avoid definites like the plague, last I heard it was all "never say never" and "not at this time" and whatnot. That can be translated from PR speak pretty easily, sure, but it doesn't cost them anything to lead the last believers on a bit longer.

You're right. They haven't explicitly said that, but I've read into it. Just as others might read into it to fit their narrative.

At this point, it will take Fdev to do something to get me to want to play Elite again after the Horizons 3.8 legacy move.

I just don’t care anymore.
