Questions on Player Factions....NPC/CMNDR?

With all this talk of player factions, I’ve realized I know next to nothing about it…..please enlighten me.
They are basically the NPC generated factions in individual systems that human CMNDRs “adopt” and fight for/promote to send them into expansion, correct?
Is there any way to identify yourself as part of a player faction?

Also…….this sounds fun as hell, does anyone have any good system factions that are actively being supported by human CMNDRs?
This looks like the shake up I need to breathe a little more life into the game for me

So, "player faction" is faction that some player group (large or small) have asked to be added to game. They can name, choose location (some limitation) and some other stuff. If Frontier is okey with their suggestion they add it in to game. "player faction" is faction that some players have named. Thats only difference that there is to other "NPC" factions greated by frontier. Players have no control over their faction as player factions work like any other faction and can only be influenced via BGS (back ground simulation). They don't get any special benefits from their faction and they have no mention of it on their stats etc. and for the faction they are like any other random player. Any player that comes across system that has player faction have same benefits than those who have worked for that faction (like improved ship yard and some other small changes players can do to factions via BGS.) and their actions against and to support said faction count same amount as those who have "Their" faction.

So its way to name faction, which is nice if you like to play bgs but brings zero benefits over other CMDRs.

Each system has three or four procedurally-generated factions which have been in the game since the faction system was implemented. There are also some "hand-crafted" factions added into the game by the Devs, such as the ruling factions in Sol, Alioth and Achenar. Then there are the so-called "player factions" which player groups have asked to be hand-crafted and added into the game.

Each one operates under the same rules. Players are free to work for or against any of the factions and all three types of faction are (or can be) supported by groups of players. The "player groups" all have a core group of players that support them... unless of course the players that formed the group have all stopped playing the game. Most of the procedurally-generated and Dev-inserted factions, on the other hand, don't have a core group of supporters. But some of the largest, noisiest and "most famous" player-supported factions are actually procedurally-generated ones which player groups adopted long before player factions were invented. The Dukes of Mikunn and the Social Eleu Progressive Party are two that come to mind.

If you're looking for a player group to join, just browse through the player groups subforum and find one you like.

As for formally-in-game aligning yourself with a faction such that other CMDRs can see your allegiance, no, you can't do that. We've been told that formally aligning with a minor faction is something they want to implement in the future, but for now, all you can do is add a fancy logo to your forum signature.
