Questions Regarding Tip Off "Missions"

Over time, I've occasionally received in-game e-mails labelled "Tip Off" that instructed me to go to a specific system, planet, and coordinates for a "big payout." I thought these were supposed to lead to crashed ships or something similar.

Anyway, I did one two nights ago and it lead me to medium security installation that was already on the map (persistent). I was a little annoyed they didn't just list the installation, because that would've been easier/quicker to navigate to instead of lat/long coordinates. So I raided the base - took about 30 minutes and I racked up 70k in bounties - for a 1.9 million data package.

So is that it? Do these missions always lead to bases you need to raid? And is the "big payout" usually in this 1.9 million credit range? If so, I'll just ignore these in the future... unless I feel the urge to charge in and wreck a base.

It seems that there are at least a couple different types of these, I've only been to an Anaconda crash-site through one, myself--that one had a similar pay out from the data and scattered cargo (can't remember what it was, it's been a while), but the plus side was that it was lawless, so no fines or anything.

Good to know. I have a second Tip Off available to me right now. I'll go check it out. If it doesn't involve smashing another base (or possibly even if does), then I'll do it.

Yep,

Said it before but the best way to approach tip-off missions is to always be prepared to abandon them.

I usually accept them because they're a pleasant little adventure but if I get to my destination and it turns out to be a base and I'm probably going to end-up with a bounty as a result of monkeying around with it then I'll just abandon it.
It's not the danger that bothers me.
It's the fact that if I end up with a bounty I'll have to spend a week avoiding irritating bounty-hunters without succumbing to the temptation to space them.

As a rule, the crashed ships usually (in my experience) pay a couple of hundred-thousand credits for scanning the data-core plus whatever you can pick up in nearby salvage - which can sometimes be high-value goods such as Palladium but it's only ever half a dozen containers so you're not going to get rich doing these missions.

Mostly, they're just a distraction from whatever else you're doing at the time.

These are potentially one of the coolest features implemented so far.

Potentially...

I hope to see these get more awesome in future.

I've never had a "tip off" mission, but I've gotten a handful of unsolicitated "reglar" missions.

I wish I got both kinds much much more often. (Or, in the case of treasure hunting tip-offs, it would be nice to get them at all!)
