Questions without Answers - Current List and Status

Any chance of a yes / no answer as to an orrery?
When are the placeholder USS / combat zones etc going to be integrated into the game properly?
Will Powerplay / CQC ever be shown some love?

Ever since I first installed the game over 2.5 yrs ago I've found that when I'm cruising past a star (e.g. fuel scooping), if I look at the star as I go past it, its surface texture tends to render in very noticeable jumps every few seconds (i.e. <smooth transition> <smooth transition> <jump> <smooth transition> <smooth transition> <jump>).
Yep. I have asked about it a couple of times, but no one seemed to be bothered about it.

I thought it was a crappy gif anim they hadn't bothered to animate properly (just loops back to starting frame), s'what it looks like to me. I hates it!

ohh we are bothered. At least I am, and my brother, and My Gf.
It`s been here since before launch though... brought up many many times so I guess people have, just like me, tagged it as one of the many stinky parts of Elite and moved on or quit playing like I did

I think if people are quitting over an LOD bug, I suspect that wasn't the main reason ;)

The star LOD is likely due to it's sheer size. I know that they adjusted the LOD after coming out of a jump to help the star textures load quicker for consoles, and they adjusted the delay in loading to be as short as is likely possible.

It'll probably just remain one of those 'things'.

Please add the following to your list:

- Stutter when dropping from SC to a station
- Textures changing on suns
- Textures updating on planets causing frame rate hitches.

The first one in this list remains my biggest beef with the game at this point. With an overclocked 1080ti and 6700k running at 1080p 60hz, I don't think I should be having any frame rate/frame time issues with this game. ;)

And then there's the bug or whatever it should be called with uneven rendering of star zones. Closer to the core, there are areas where a square zone of stars is rendered with the stars, and another is empty or thinned out. It's not a major bug, but it's an issue.

Like this one (I have plenty of these pictures):

It's a pretty funny shot. Lined up the ships nose to the corner of the star field. :)

Oh and also, the system map. We need a better design.
Or simply add API to allow 3rd party tools to do the route planning live. No cut-n-paste, but simply one click load or something. Allowing an XML file with a full route, star-by-star whatever distance wanted.

Why do you think FD caved so quickly when the third-party dev's went on strike? :)

I can't say why they caved. I just wish they hadn't. Let the 3rd party sites all quit. Maybe then, fdev would feel the pressure to build sensible features into the game properly instead of being able to use external sites and programs as a crutch.

the fact that fan-made sites "going on strike" put any pressure on them just illustrates the amount of wrong the entire situation is.

That also, but I was talking about the System map, not Galaxy map :p
Displaying a concentric model on a 2d plane is not the best
Remember these ?

Was doing the Guardian Ruins mission a couple of weeks ago and I noticed there were some seriously complicated systems involved in that; places that had 3 or 4 stars, all with little mini-systems orbiting them, and moons, and "rogue" planets which seemed to be "orbiting" by themselves. Somehow.
IIRC, the highest planet-count in one of the systems I visited (was paying attention 'cos I was trying to make extra credits with full scans) was something like 74.

The Orrery seems like a good idea - and it would be if they could get it working properly, and reliably - but, given the procedural nature of the ED galaxy, I bet it'd end up being a right PITA trying to code it all so it showed the orbits of all the bodies in complex systems, fitted it all on the screen and did it in such a way as to be useful as well as pretty.

The current system map works okay. It just looks really hokey - like something out of a 1990s RTS - and it's one of the most jarring gaps in the all-important "immersion" for me.
I wouldn't mind if they made the system map even more low-res but had it display in a cockpit HUD.
