Quick cancel for system/galaxy map

I'm way out in the middle of nowhere, and the system map can take several seconds to load. Galactic map is quicker but still not instantaneous. While I'm waiting for this, and while the system map is up, the ship throttle and attitude controls do not work. So let's say I run the discovery scanner, line up my ship for some fuel scooping and surface scanning, and then switch to system map to check out what's there. Then I realize that I'm coming in too fast. I have to wait for the system map to load before I can cancel and change speed/direction.

I can cancel FSD with the touch of a button if I realize I'm about to overheat. Why can't I do the same with the system/galactic map?

On a related note, all secondary screens should auto-exit if I'm overheating. I recently came out of GalNet news to discover my heat indicator at 158% and my systems melting around me. I'm half way to the galactic core and suddenly my ship health is half what it was. Not cool.

I have the same issue when exploring. I would love to see a means of instantly cancelling the 'Load System Map' that effectively locks me out of ship control .. usually because I have selected it by accident.

Not long ago I accidentally hit the system map button on my HOTAS while I was in the process of landing my Corvette. It was in a large system, for which the system map has a ten seconds loading time. I immediately knew that I was going to crash onto the landing pad or into the control tower, but there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.

Thankfully my shields took most of the hit so my ship was not destroyed, but not being able to cancel delayed commands like this (opening the maps, launching, going into the hangar, going to outfitting etc.) is a real PITA.

I use keyboard exclusively. Loading the maps, takes a lifetime and I have found hitting the 'ESC' key, a couple of times, does the trick of counselling the loading of those screens.

I want / need this too.

I sometimes play on an old laptop, and its been known to take up to 4 minutes to load the system map!
Hitting it by accident while docking, fuel Scooping, or in combat can basically mean suicide!
Or just while traveling, you can overshoot your target by 10,000s of Ls! Lol

It never made sense to me how that worked. You're flying your ship and you turn your head to look at your nav computer. Evidently, while that computer is working, you absolutely cannot turn your head to hear alerts that you're being attacked or your ship is melting. It makes no sense.

I bind the Galaxy/System maps to a toggle switch on the Saitek X-55 throttle controller. Galaxy opens 2 sec, System ~5 sec, both close instantaneously.

I'm overheating [...] Not cool.
*snicker*

Three month old thread. I think it just comes down to safe practices. What I see here are players getting distracted at the stick then complaining when they get burnt. I dunno, but flying into a sun doesn't sound like the best time to check the maps. Maybe throttle down before opening them? Seems logical to me.

My issue with the suggested is that if I'm in a high pressure situation such as overheating, I don't want my galmap to close on me when trying to jump out. A superior solution would be to have ship heat, proximity, and under fire warnings still be audible if focus is elsewhere.

Being able to cancel any UI loading screen is a good change in my opinion.

A responsible pilot never uses the cell phone or other distracting things while driving. Everyone knows this leads to accidents. Stop getting engrossed by the galactic map panel and forgetting to look back at that huge star you are hurtling towards!

Seriously though, I still think a mini-map of the stars within jump range could be put on the sensor display disc, just as the current system shows up when in super-cruise. Make it a third mode, toggled by key and restrict it to a certain volume or spherical range with the player ship in the middle.

There is a coding limitation of displaying the full galactic map view as a HUD overlay or 'side panel', FD tried and it just wasn't going to work. But I think my idea would be cool and work. The Orrey view could also reasonably have a Sensor display version since we sort of have that now with stars and planets showing up when in Super-cruise.
