Quick Tip : How to rapidly deactivate supercruise assist

I have literally just discovered how to do this and thought it may be useful to others.

If like me you were heading towards a specific location on a planets surface using supercruise assist, and it all starts to get a bit messy because your ship is trying to automatically orbit the destination you're trying to land at...

Simply have an option set up in your controls (I'm on xbox using the obvious controller) for 'TARGET NEXT SYSTEM IN ROUTE'

It will instantly turn off supercruise assist.

Previously I was bringing up the left hand navigation menu and switching it off from there, which wasn't fast enough for my liking.

(For all of those who never, ever, use supercruise assist and ripped the module from its housing as a matter of principle before you had even been given the keys to your ship... feel free to remind all of us as I would hate for you to miss this opportunity) :D

Edit: Er scrap that I made a mistake. It doesn't work as I explained it there. If the last destination in your route from the galaxy map is, for example a landfall on a planet it won't work.

However IF the last part of your route was the main system star, and you have manually selected the landfall site on a planet once in system, it will work as it switches off any assists and locks back onto the main star.

I don't think I've explained that very clearly but mess around with it and you'll find something that may be of use to you ☺

This is amazing info. I'd up you a bunch of times if it were possible. This is more useful than just deactivating supercruise assist, but also works for dropping target in combat, also dropping target on something you'd like a limpet to scoop without killing itself afterwards.
 
Super cruise assist? What is it? I've never seen it. Is it a new feature? How?

It's a feature found in the left hand menu when in the cockpit or on the deck of your ship. If you select a planet or station as a target, but select (I think it's the second option from the left) 'supercruise assist' it will lock on and bring you to your destination. You have to line up roughly with the target but it does the rest.

Planetary body : will bring you out of supercruise and into orbit around it

Station : will bring you out of supercruise less than 10km distance away

Port : same as the station, but you you will probably have to find the entrance as there's a good chance you won't already be facing it (port entrances usually face toward the planetary body they orbit, I think)

If you find it's not for you, or if you want to free up a size 1 module slot (could be useful on a smaller ship) simply remove the module when in the outfitting screen
 
Supercruise assist is very useful and way more powerful than manual.. you just have to use it the right way. I have one even on my FDL as it allows me to quickly jump through the RES sites looking for some 'surprise PvP' engagements.

1) Turn off the auto-throttle

2) Set your throttle to 100% and turn on assist while you fly towards a station/port

3) When you are about 6 seconds away, set your throttle to 75%

4) The assist will drop you even when you are still going way way over the minimum 1M m/s requirement for manual

This easily saves you about a minute of supercruise travel time in most cases.

As for planets? Manual supercruise works best for them and a loop around the planet is more efficient then decelerating directly or using the assist. Sometimes even 'crashing' out of supercruise is faster (if the settlement is right ahead or you want to land).. but I don't do it as it feels kinda lame.
 
When approaching a planetary base, I've sometimes had SCA jump me straight from supercruise to a few km above the base, skipping orbital flight and glide. Other times it just starts orbiting the planet though. I don't know what makes the difference; I suspect the size of the planet has something to do with it.

Maybe it's just having an ultra efficient good day!?

Good hint! Just an addendum: if you don't have a Next System in Route checked, just click on the Target key (not pointing to the Supercruise Assist target) and the SA will also deactivate.
 
SCA can also be turned off temporarily by setting the speed above or below the blue range. If you have key binds for 0% and 100% that's quick, too.
