What utter utter poppycock! Sorry but that sounds about as silly as this whole thread. If you are really so bent out of shape by the way the game is being designed and run why are you still here?
Way to calm it down there...

We have yet to see if it's poppycock, unless you have clairvoyant powers hitherto not demonstrated. :)

It would appear that being an early enthusiastic backer has its downside:

Honourable?

However, my opinion of FD has taken somewhat of a nosedive I will confess. It does *not* bode well for the whole p2w/microtransaction thing in the future, but those discussions just give me a headache, so we'll just have to wait and see on that.
Whatever.

Not wait and see, not whatever; fight, never give up, never surrender.

You missed "I'm an Alpha, don't refund or upgrade."

Clarification came through that the recent decision to give the beta to Alphas first could be as little as "hours" lead simply to make sure the build isn't fundamentally broken. It was a decision by the devs, and given the amount of whining on the forums when something goes wrong, I can fully understand WHY they are doing this. The amount of whine now is far less than the amount of whine they'll receive if a bad build gets released. As many 'beta' backers have stated - they don't want to play a broken game, but a working one, so they are waiting for beta. This is actually one step towards fulfilling that wish.

The insurance perk is negligible and not worth the price of upgrade unless you really can't wait to 'play'... Right now it's a lot of bug squishing and not so much playing (at least for some).

Sure, you could get a refund, but you'll be missing out on some great gameplay (at least I assume so from the features we're testing now) and opportunity for feedback before release. If the recent 'perks' upset you that much, get a refund. In the end, I think you'll regret it, especially if Frontier announces perks for Beta backers and you're no longer there to get them. I have to think that FD will have something special for people from all stages of testing as a thank you from seeing what they are doing now.

The whiners need to get a life

I was beta, but upgraded to alpha after the newsletter.

Not because of insurance.
Not because I can play "sooner" than betas during beta testing.

But because my work flow is finally slowing down a bit and I can finally test ED as it currently stands and also make sure that it runs on my 4 year old rig. If it wasn't running well, then I'd be building a new rig (already picked out all the parts), but don't really want to part with the money unless I have to.

And I found out that my 4 year old rig is handling the game at high settings (Preset: High), 1920x1080 just fine. So what's my rig?
AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition Quad-core (3.2GHz)
Asus M5A99X EVO Motherboard
XFX Radeon HD 4890 1 GB GDDR5
8 gig RAM Corsair Vengance (I think DDR3 1600)
Windows 7 64-bit
FRAPS is telling me 20FPS in the station, 30FPS outside the station (flying to/around it with it in my field of view), and 30FPS in the asteroid field.

So I may upgrade when the game is officially released, but frankly it's running just fine right now, especially for these tired old eyes who played the original Elite on his Commodore 64.

That's the 'Do nothing' slot, had to keep things as simple as possible.

Thanks for posting, I cant give out any more rep apparently :(

Ok, I did choose that but is sounds so cold... If you had the money to upgrade, Alpha 2 or start of 3 might have been ok, but it's getting late in the game for upgrade, so you have to be really itching to play to do it. The 'perks' aren't really worth the price. Otherwise, if you're patience is good, wait until May/June (if it takes a really long time to fix netcode, about the only thing that seems to be limited play right now in a serious way IMHO)

I wanted to convey that I was in Alpha with experience. I'm really hoping FD has perks lined up for everyone involved. Didn't ask for what I got, and don't *plan* on using my insurance perk...

I understand the wish of the devs to limit damages of a bad build to a limited number - easier to fix the damage. Didn't ask for that either, but if it makes the beta rollout smoother for those wanting a 'smoother' beta experience, so be it. Some have signed up for bug squishing at beta level, others (judging from comments on various polls about upgrading to alpha) want the smoother gameplay testing of the beta phase. Can't say as I blame them, but because there have been bad builds that slip by FD's internal testing (weekend of spinning ship loading animations where people couldn't get in game), getting a (from the sounds of it) quick test out in the open before full launch could stop such a thing from happening. It would be cool to allow for an opt-in to the pre-launch test, but that would be more time devoted to setup, and pause game development... Something I think no one really wants to see. Let's face it, I think we all really just want to be playing full release ED right now... :D

Fair enough.

I'd like to say for the record that when beta rolls around I *personally* don't want any 'perks' whatsoever that aren't part of my 'pledge' level, and that aren't provided to those on pledge tiers below me, unless I've earned them in-game.

At release, after a period of faffing about with toys from my kickstarter pledge, I'll be starting proper with 100cr and a rustbucket.

Most people are happy or do not mind.

"Do nothing" can mean "I'm happy", or "I'll wait and see", or "do something but none of the above".

If you are really so bent out of shape by the way the game is being designed and run why are you still here?

Perhaps he is a backer who would like to see FD reconsider their tactics? This is the only place that any backers outside of Alpha and DDF can suggest a change.

It's a bit like "support our troops", people complaining about decisions the politicians make doesn't mean not supporting the folks out in the trenches.

The amount of whine now is far less than the amount of whine they'll receive if a bad build gets released. As many 'beta' backers have stated - they don't want to play a broken game, but a working one, so they are waiting for beta.
I haven't seen that. Perhaps their expectations need to be lowered now so they'll not be disappointed later? Of course, it perhaps comes back to the pricing model, "I paid 100 quid to be waiting for xyz?"

I think the answer to this dilemma is to rename what was 'Alpha Beta 1.0', 'Alpha 5.0' (assuming Alpha 4.x was planned to be the last major Alpha release).
Then when 'Alpha 5.0' is rolled out, and assuming no major show-stoppers (like the SSOD), follow up with 'Beta 1.0' 24 hours (or whatever) later.
It's just semantics anyway.

EDIT - or call it 'Alpha 4.9'

I'll wait until Ultra Mega Awesome Premium Beta is available in the store and get access 25 minutes before the people who just have Mega Awesome Premium Beta... That will be a storm in a tea cup I tell you...

No, the main complaint is that having backed to the level of premium beta, access to the first round of private beta testing. A new concept of pre-beta beta testing has been conceived to sell more alpha subscriptions.
Did you not see me ask Michael about this early access for Alpha testers and his reply of it being for no more than a few hours? Nobody, not even me, would be stupid enough to buy Alpha just get those few hours access above Premium Beta! I really hope that I don't get some kind of unfair advantage over you in those few hours KickahasTier.

He said it "might even be just a few hours" if the game were at such a stable point then. He said the length of the beta depends on how many issues they were dealing with. If the game were completely perfect and bug free a few hours would suffice. But we all know this is not going to happen and it will be longer.
