The whinging about whinging posts are beginning to get worse than the whinging posts :)

He said it "might even be just a few hours" if the game were at such a stable point then. He said the length of the beta depends on how many issues they were dealing with. If the game were completely perfect and bug free a few hours would suffice. But we all know this is not going to happen and it will be longer.

Let me clarify that, the beta builds are unlikely to be perfect and bug free, the quick verification test is to try and catch major show stoppers before it goes to the wider group and that would probably take a few hours. If a showstopper is found then it's delayed until it is fixed.

If the project runs out of cash [snip] this bru-ha-ha on the part of Beta backers who feel slighted will be a walk in the park compared with how Alpha backers will suddenly feel about things.
Not really. This alpha backer understood that he was donating money and not purchasing a product, so while it would be a shame if it ran out cash and never got released, I knew exactly what I was getting into. I would have nobody to whinge and whine at but myself ;)

It truly is bewildering that some here didn't/don't get this and need/ed to be told the obvious.

Be certain in all cases, that among your loyal backers, there will be, always of many good souls, to bring back in the stable, the lost sheep

:p

Show some appreciation for beta and gamma backers. PAX is coming, release a backer demo with a couple of offline scenarios for everyone, so every backer can take a look at basic gameplay on their own PCs.

Look at it this way. The Alpha backers are used to getting multiple Gb updates over the course of a couple of days, with discussions along the line of 'is X.y+1 more unplayable than X.y'. Unleashing this sort of instability on the presumably significantly larger pool of Beta backers is silly. Beta backers for the most part will be expecting to be able to play without any blocking bugs.

All that has been revealed is that Alpha backers are being forced to Out-of-Box test the beta releases before the beta backers have to upgrade. I assume this isn't just for beta 1.0, but all incremental beta stages too.

I've clocked up a grand total of 321 minutes playing since Alpha3, mostly limited by my free time not aligning with the build at the time being stable enough. Exposing beta backers to the risk of new and exotic ways of getting persistent crash-to-desktop or worse is just madness.

The MP nature means that players have no choice about sticking with an older version - once a build is pushed out, it seems to be clear within hours if there is a big problem (and we've seen once or twice a new release pushed the same day to fix issues).

We don't know how it's going to work yet. It's entirely possible that alphas will still have access to the beta server while the new version is being tested, and testing will be optional. It's also possible that betas won't have any access for days at a time between builds while large problems go through an alpha process.

We simply don't know. The one thing I've learnt this week is that you really can't assume anything about how the beta process will work. Until solid information comes out, everything else is guesswork, wishful thinking and worrying. Next week things should get clearer.

Michael steps in for clarification and being his friendly self, yet the backers carry on their quarrel like nothing happened.

maybe the quarrel should be shown for what it is, a circle jerk, and left alone...

have a great weekend everyone btw
