R9 390X or GTX 980Ti for ED?

Going to buy a new gpu in about 2 weeks and wondered if anyone had any feedback re these two cards?

I will admit that I am loathe to go the AMD route after previous bad experiences (though we are going back a few years) but currently the R9 390X looks better in benchmarks / has 2GB more memory / similar noise levels and is £330 vs £490 for the 980Ti.

Most of the above info is gleaned from various internet sources and I realise real world experience for any one game are often different.

Thanks in advance for any help! Bit of a minefield buying a gpu!

If you are on a budget, 970 or 390 is more than enough for Elite. If you are dead set at those prices you mention, 980 to beats 390X by far. then again, you pay a good bit more.

Be aware though, AMD cards do not work well with Win10 and latest drivers with Elite, dropping you down to 15 FPS a in SC. So unless they fix that, I recommend 980ti (still massive ovk for this game).

Edit: By 980 I mean Ti.

Apparently, and I only have this on what Ive read here, that ED is more suited to AMD. Which suits me as I have 2x6950 2Gb cards. I too was about to upgrade to a ti980 until I found this out and as my ED still runs at ultra no probs, i decided to delay it until such time as everything else is sorted out. I only wanted to upgrade for other games in the future not ED. So I am waiting until Dues Ex is released before I upgrade. I have no prefs AMD or NVidia, both have been excellent for me whenever.

Have you seen a benchmark that backs that up though? All the ones I'm seeing are rating the 390X slightly faster than even a Titan.

Am thinking with the higher res / high framerate Oculus CV1 it might be worth invesitng a bit more to get the grunt needed so going the route of "buy once / cry once" :)

I am using an old HD6450 AMD card and it works flawlessly with Elite. With Win 10 its even better than 8.1. I've had zero trouble with any AMD cards in 20 years and build boxes as a sideline. I like the Catalyst interface better too. Our forum has lots of examples of folks rolling back there Nvidias after experiencing problems.

I have old history with AMD / Ati cards but I feel they may have sorted out those problems so may be prepared to give it another go with them. Especially if they are £150 cheaper for the same performance (though still not sure if this is true.)

I am playing the old Deus Ex on Win10 in compatibility mode! Good times.
I shop mainly by price and usually buy year old NOS comp parts to save money. I will probably get whatever 2G AMD card that's on clearance soon. I can't justify anything too expensive. I'm not doing 3D rendering, running a VR set or using a 4K UHD monitor so it would be overkill for me.

980ti is much more powerful card. you won't use at the moment that extra 2gb of VRAM of 390x. 390x is just re-branded 290x and at the moment I'm on 295x2 which is one card of 2 of 290x. I can say that both cards - 390x an 980ti have far more umph to run ED yet you won't utilities both cards in full. This is due to ED engine being very "specific". It is still 32 bit engine and both camps - Nvidia and AMD report stuttering and problems. I play very comfortably either on one or 2 of my GPUs and find not much problems. These problems are common of what other players see - stuttering and drop frames. If this card is only for playing ED - 390x is more than fine if and you will save yourself some cash. If for other stuff 980ti is the fastest card around and you can't go wrong with it

for benchmarks for other games check here:

it's just an example of many 390x around

Ah thanks! These are the first benchmarks I've seen showing the 390X as slower.
Unsure why I only found ones showing it as faster...

That's helpful!

Didn't see that you were getting it for High res. In that case the 390X may beat out the Ti in some games due to the VRAM alone, but very rarely in the marks that I've watched.

But again I want to stress that with Win 10, AMD's newer cards like the 390X will not perform well in Elite.

so my 2 cents

I bought 2 sapphire Dual-X 280x 3gb cards(around $200 each) and have not regretted it. I can play all games at max settings at 1920 x 1080. If you want a 4k card you will need to go for something more powerful but for me this is a great card. Prior to this I used a GForce 650 Ti which also was a great card for me for years. I gave it to my nephew since he only had intel 4000 graphics in his PC.

I probably could have waited for the 300 series cards to come out but these work well for me. check slickdeals.net for offers on cards sometimes you can find a really good deal posted there.

Note: you don't need two cards to run ED. One will work just fine. I just always wanted to run in CrossFire/SLI mode to see what it is like. :) I'm a geek like that

you need a heater for cold winter: AMD, you want to play with high FPS: NVidia ^^

I suspect this is like saying a new R1 is faster than a new Fireblade. Usually the difference is in
10ths of a second. Sure its faster if you can actually use the extra it gives you. Most peeps cant and wont really feel the difference. Also where one is quicker the other is slower and vice versa. Unless of course you are a pro and need every 10th you can get. But for us plebs there is little to gain imho. Unless you have money to burn then I'd guess I'd buy the biggest and baddest too. :)

Besides both my 6950's are OCUK water cooled specials from back in the day (2011 I think I bought the rig from them). Its run flawlessly since they delivered it.

980 and 980 ti are two different beasts. The 980 is slightly slower than the 390x in many games, the 980 ti is the current god mode of video cards.

The 390x is more than enough to run ED for years to come though, unless you're running 4k or a Rift. Any more than 2 1440p monitors and I'd also jump to the 980 ti. So if you're still on 1080p and don't intend to get a new monitor anytime soon, just grab a 390x and save the cash.

1. The 980 does not beat the 390x in every test, far from it. If you watch some of the independent test's you'll see a different picture from what the likes of Nvidia tech tips... oops meant to say Linus tech tips will have shown. At 4k the GTX980 falls behind the 390X.
2. I have a 390 8G and Windows 10 - All you need to do is optimise the game again and win 10 runs fine... I get around 105 FPS, same as I did in Windows 7.
3. 980ti compares to the FuryX and again when you go past 1080p the 980ti begins to fall behind... This is before we even go near SLI and Crossfire where the scaling of the AMD cards is far better then that of the nvidia cards.

I know you obviously have your favourite GPU maker for some unknown reason but when you are just objective about it and read all the reviews not just the biased ones you get to see the real picture.

1. Are we talking about the Ti vs 390X or 980 vs 390X? The videos I linked compare the Ti and the 390X (unless I'm blind), and in games such as BF4, the 980Ti clearly out performs the 390X.

2. May I ask how you did this? I'm getting 15 FPS in Supercruise with the same card and OS, but the same FPS as you get only in Normal Space. Nothin I've tried works.

3. Wasn't my intention to compare them. In the video I linked the Fury X comes out on top.

Edit: My original post was 980 only when I meant Ti. Sorry bit misleading!

still it was a nice diss!

I'm using an EVGA GTX980TI Super clocked ACX 2.0. I have elite running maxed with DSR enabled at 4k res. Getting 130 fps with 144hz monitor in space sometimes higher. It's more than enough for this game. If you got the dough it's a great purchase, if not, my old gigabyte 770 oc 4gb was great at running this in 1080 not 4k DSR though.

The only information we're lacking is what kind of display is used.

ED isn't anywhere close to making either of these card sweat in 1920x1080 on a single display. So it's really just a question of fanaticism for like 95%.
