Newcomer / Intro Rank in Federation

Hi folks,

I have about 40 million credits, and want to maybe save for the federal assault or federal drop ship. I might rather save longer and get the bigger one. But I'm not a member of the Federation and it said I have to be Ensign or Lieutenant (can't remember which).

When I google search it says do missions to get reputation in right panel. When I look it says I'm ALLIED 99% and a RECRUIT 100%.

Is there anything special to get from recruit to the next rank? Or I just keep doing missions?

My current ship is the Vulture and it just does not have enough space inside. Want to get something bigger and with more guns and a bigger power plant.

V/r,
Bryan

Oh I just found it on the page I was on. At the bottom.

Once a pilot reaches 100% rank progress, Federation-aligned minor factions with whom the pilot has a "cordial" or higher standing will begin to offer promotion missions for the Federal Navy. Completing a promotion mission will increase rank by one level. Note that rank progress continues to increase and count toward higher ranks even if the 100% mark for rank has been reached; no reputation gains are lost while waiting for a promotion mission to appear. Federal Navy promotion missions usually include the phrases "Federal Navy" in the mission title, for example "Federal Navy Acquisition Contract" or "Federal Navy Covert Transportation Mission".

Doing the missions for the Feds. But check that the missions you take are from The Federation only (Faction allied to the federation) ...AND check that the mission reward is as much REPUTATION as possible. (Just take the REPUTATION element reward each and every time, no matter how attractive another reward may seem). You will be offered the next 'rank up' mission once you have reached 100% with each level. If you are not immediately offered a 'Naval' progression mission keep on doing missions as the percentage gained for the next level keeps increasing 'under the counter' or 'behind the scenes' without being shown. Enjoy and you'll soon get where you want to be. o7

Dropship is level 3 rank, Midshipman.

Assault Ship is level 5 rank, Chief Petty Officer.

You see now how to do it. There are a number of ways to increase your fill rate, including passenger and data missions at select locations, but any completed mission from a Fed-aligned minor faction will boost your superpower rank. You could get this done in a few hours running incursion rescues at the damaged stations right now. But for that you need something other than a Vulture I reckon.

For the same sort of money as those ships you could also consider a Chieftain, which is not rank-locked. Definitely has more guns!

Okay maybe the Chieftain is better for me. I will take a look at that one. I feel like I'm not a great pilot so I need to just rotate, point and shoot. Hence more guns.

Chieftain is a good ship, and for me, better than either of those Fed bricks. No offense to anyone who owns one of course. I love the Orca and no one else does so that's how it goes.

Chieftain is agile, packs a punch, has good optionals, though three are military, which is not an issue since it's a combat ship. It's a good choice too, I think, for players without the ability to do G5 shields yet. Pack it full of HRPs and MRPs and have at it. It has two large hardpoints to match the firepower of your Vulture, but then adds a medium and three smalls. Versatile, agile, hostile.

I am at a mission. How do I see whether the guy giving me the mission is with the federation or not?

Sorry I don't have a screen shot. I'm trying with F12 and Steam VR is not taking it.

Okay I might be an idiot. Now that I asked that question I see it on the top right.

But what I don't see (yet) is how to tell whether this will increase my rank.

The Fed rank missions also have the Fed "icon" as a backdrop displayed in the mission list. The ones that increase rank the most will have "rep +" or "rep +++" against them. To rank up after getting 100% of your current rank, you'll be offered a follow up mission with a "chain" graphic in the description and it will say something about Fed increase.

It will say Navy in the mission name. If you don't like what is offered, usually just reloading the mission board will serve up a new one, not relogging, just exit and re-enter the mission board. It could also remove it completely, in which case another reload is likely to generate a new one, and it could also move it to another faction, so check through them all. I tend to skip the strike missions, and look for courier. But others will do if the ship I am in is right for it. I am talking about the rank-up mission you will be offered when your superpower rank hits 100.

Okay yes my rank said 100% I think. I have looked and never found the rank-up mission, but I could be misinterpreting the mission names.

I did do a scan mission just now. It said in top right the superpower was federation, but then I scanned a federation post. So now I'm wanted in 2 systems, which is funny. At least I know how to do a scan mission. There was a big white cylinder which I scanned and then everyone started shooting at me and I ran away. Or maybe I did 2 scan missions. One was to scan multiple things in a station, and the other was to find a hidden post and then scan the cylinder. So I am wanted in both places.

I will check back and look for the Naval mission. If not I will recycle the board.

Okay I found it. Yes it does say Navy in the name. It is called Federal Navy Courier Job and the reward is very small and it's a chain icon.

So I think the reason I skipped it before was I thought it was beneath my level. It says at the bottom next rank Cadet.

Well I guess I was wrong. I looked after turning in that mission. It still says Cadet and 100% for my Federation rank. Weird.

That just means you've done enough fed rank missions to get a few promotions. You have to do one promotion mission for each rank, so you successfully went from recruit to cadet. But due to the fact you've gained a lot of fed navy rep, you already set for your next promotion mission!

Keep in mind that many non courier and delivery missions will involve you in something illegal, there is a reason (deniability) they hire scruffy mercenaries like us to do the work.

Yes all the rank up missions will have a chain symbol and appear at the top of that factions list, but check for the navy/naval type clues in the description as not all chain missions are rank ups some are merely follow up missions.
