Rant Time

I remember long ago (2.1), I didn’t have quite enough to rebuy my relatively new AspX after it bellyflopped into an asteroid while evading some baddies, but there was a system in place that basically worked like a loan that I had to pay off, and I got to keep my ship. Does that still exist?

Yep, its limited and capped though so if you've got a very expensive ship or are still paying the last one off it won't cover you.

Its designed to help noobs rather than bail out people with an inexplicable gulf between their space-cash and knowledge.

Yup, it does, it is still rank based, and if you used it previously you still have to pay it back.

Long story short: ship got biffed. At no point was it implied that if I couldn't afford to rebuy my ship, that I would lose the ship permanently.

I very much view that as a self contained explanation. If you can't rebuy your ship, what exactly did you think would supposedly happen? They put it in storage so you can go out and save up the money to "buy" it out of storage. The only way I can see that working is if you have to pay the original purchase cost and not the 10% cost.

You learnt a good lesson. "Don't fly without rebuy."

I think that having a 5% rebuy rate and being able to rebuy your ship with all engineering is a sweet enough system, all you have to do is make sure that you can rebuy the ship in the unfortunate event of getting it destroyed. I find it hard to understand why some people go out into space without rebuy, get their ship destroyed and then deposit salt in the forums.

Tough luck. :)

There should be more hints on the loading screen. Like:
"Any ship could be destroyed."
"Combat Eagle is able to destroy stock Anaconda in 5 seconds."
"There's no endgame ship in the game."
That would be a good title for a new thread: "Loading Screen Hints - Post your Suggestions" :)

1. All the information you need is present in game.
2. You can get a loan if you don't have enough funds.
3. If that doesn't help, you can deselect expensive modules and reduce the rebuy costs.
4. If that doesn't help you can earn the missing money in CQC.
5. At this point you already screwed up 4 times. Blame T.j.

The game warns you about the rebuy issue on the load screen if I remember correctly, but I guess if you're new that might not mean much. Welcome to Elite Dangerous! You're gonna learn some painful lessons over the next few months, because this game does not hold your hand when you're new.
Yes, I think that you're correct, but it's easy to miss I guess. Something so central should be made clear to players from the outset, so it's a valid criticism. I would have thought that it would be forced home during the new starter experience.

Y'know what really ticks me off? When you sink countless hours into building up your arsenal, only to have it wiped out in one fell swoop. To make it worse, I only get one chance to repurchase my ship. FIX YOUR poopoo, FRONTIER!! Add an insurance agent/contact or something that can give other players the opportunity to repurchase their ship. Until then, you will receive no more of my business. Good day, and thank you for making me waste my time.

The age old mistake in ED of purchasing more ship than you actually can not yet afford and when you don't allow enough cash left over for the re-buy cost, been there yup and done that and no I don't feel sorry for you because 'your're learning' lessons you won't forget. (Yes I think we all learned the hard way as well) ;-)

I'm not criticizing the OP, I did exactly the same in my first week of play - flew a T6 without rebuy until I sold off the cargo it was carrying... never made it to the station to sell the cargo... Lost interdiction, was stupid enough to fire the pea-shooters on the T6, hello Sidey, my old friend... Easy enough to do, instant lesson in rebuy too :)

Oh dear. User error then. You seem to assumed this was like most MMOs where there is nothing to lose, death is meaningless and everything is easy. You flew without a rebuy and now you are shouting at clouds because this is clearly not entirely your fault.

I think you will find little sympathy here. Have a tissue. Learn, adapt, succeed. Or go away and play something else. But shouting at clouds here is pretty pointless.

Long story short: ship got biffed. At no point was it implied that if I couldn't afford to rebuy my ship, that I would lose the ship permanently. As I stated in the initial post, they need to add an insurance contact, so that there is more than one opportunity to rebuy.
So. You lost your ship, didn't have enough for a rebuy, and you thought your ship would magically turn up in your hangar? It's been a long time since I lost a ship, but I'm fairly certain the rebuy screen is pretty obvious. And they even give you a loan up to a certain amount.
I'm sorry in advance if I misunderstood your rant

I must say, it has been a while since I saw a no rebuy thread. I think mining riches have really minimised the mistake problem.
To the OP, don't stress, you now know more than you did the last time you were in a sidewinder, so progress will be faster.
We all did it. Some got away with it. But really, try not to fly without rebuy :D
