Newcomer / Intro Rare goods trading distance.

After carrying out local delivery runs and a bit of exploring I have landed up at a platform that supplies Motrona Experience Jelly. I have read that the optimal distance to transport rare goods to maximise your profit is about 125 light years. Does it matter in which direction you travel or where you trade, or is the distance simply the defining factor?

I sold a cargo hold full of rares about 200 ly away from their origin and didn't get much more than I had gotten at 130 ly distance before.

Basically, fly off in any direction for >150LY, then sell.

Ideally, you would have two "zones" where you can collect (multiple) rare commodities on various stations until your cargo hold is full. Then travel to the other zone, sell everything and start filling up again.
I always choose the "fastest" route so I have less jumps. Then I let the computer plot the course or have a coffee break while refueling every now and then in a corona.

After delivery, when your hold is (almost) empty, it's also a good opportunity to do some bounty hunting and camp a nav point for a few minutes. Just to keep things interesting.

Further, get the scan package, so on the way, you can chart star systems. Analyze the star for fast cash or fly and analyze everything in unexplored star systems for a little detour and even more cash.

Also, while docking at various systems you can check the upgrades for sale and spend your money. Or take local delivery jobs if it's on the way and you have cargo space available.

Makes an interesting gameplay without just hauling freight from A to B on the same route over and over again.

YES, for rares there is an optimal distance, increases ot a peak then goes down again. The optimal distance is dependent on the base price of the rate commodity, increasing distance with increased base price.

Yeah, distance is the only facture. To get good credits the best is to sell items at a distance of ~160ly.
You can go farther, but it's probably not worth it ^^

The graphs featured from that article, e.g. :

actually come from this forum thread: The Quest of the Lavian Brandy which feature a few more graphs showing ideal distance (130-160ly) you need to travel before selling rares.

Here's one possible profitable rares circular route (although the amount of tonnage you can now pick up may have decreased somewhat depending on the STATE of the system):
