Good evening,

I'm taking my computer to work and using my phone as a Hotspot for the Internet. I've looked through various posts but can't find a definite answer.

How much bandwidth per hour does this game use. I have 15 gigabyte of data per month on my phone. I've never bothered to see how much I use in a session online.. I understand that fsd jumps are the loading screen for the next system.

Do you think 15gb will be enough to get me through the night?

Play in solo and you'd be ok
if your phone has android, you get quite nice traffic reports and you can make an idea about the traffic after the first session
Just make sure you set your laptop connection to the hotspot as metered to reduce the amount of traffic made by windows itself

I shall do that. I'm using Samsung galaxy s9. I will switch off all unnecessary carp.

Then 15GB per night is OK.
Once I played SOLO three days in a row with sleep/eat/toilet breaks only using mobile data plan. I measured data usage. I barely spent 2-3 GB. I understand that it is kind of floating values, but I do not remember exactly because I did care not to cross 5 GB limit. And I do remember that I did not.

I started at 22:15 ish, set my computer up, put the phone near a window and setup the hotspot.. fired up the computer and connected straight away, good 4G connection. fired up ED and spent about 2 hours mining. Made 350 million buckaroonees.. what do I do now, I think ill get my Sirius permit ive been meaning to get for a while.. I simply headed to the system and went to the main station and I didn't even have to complete any missions, it was just collect permit straight away.. nice!! I then headed to mark Qwent and collected the invitation, did not have to do any missions it was waiting for me.. nice!! internet was fantastically stable and didn't use much at all. the entire session, which was 4 hours = 171 Megabytes.. that really shocked me, I thought It would have been in the gigabytes.

I really wish I had bought my headphones, playing elite dangerous without sound is so not right.. proximity alerts go unheard, interdiction is quite difficult when you cant hear.. I had no idea that sound was so important in the game. my friend was online in his server and im usually connected via the microphone, I also suspect that this is why the usage on the data was so low.. there was no VOIP to eat it all up.

ive reached my 1 Billion credits goal and a few days ago I got ELITE in trading.. ive got 3 engineers unlocked, ive still got my trusty python and my dbx, sold my Slug of a Cutter.. that was just too big, took forever to land and take off.. was like a barge and rebuys were stupid.. im glad ive made all my money back now.. onto the next goal of 2 Billion, spotting the void opals has gotten much easier now, practice makes perfect.. I was using prospector limpets at a rapid rate of knots in the beginning, now its a 50/50 I got a void opal rather than a 90/10 so im saving a huge amount of limpets, having to eject them to free up space now.. im also much better at seismic chargers, 3-4 per rock instead of 8-10 so im able now to fill my cargo hold quite quickly, it was quite difficult tonight though not being able to hear anything.. I rely on the sound of the nice lady telling me my limpets have expired. manually checking all the time is distracting..

its now 5:45 am and im goosed.. ive got another 1 hour 15 minutes before my shift ends and I can go home.. computer packed up, cup of coffee waiting for the sunrise..looking forward to doing more night shifts in the future.

To be honest, I'd have been shocked if it was the other way around. Several GBs is downloading the whole game, as opposed to check in and exchange some bits and bobs with the server. And I'd imagine that Elite didn't even use that much (unless you can tell by app?) as the OS/other apps may have been using some of that bandwidth instead.

Samsung has quite nice hot spot features, if you're really bothered with using more internet plan than planned why not set a limit? You can easily do it with your phone. I have S7 and it's under Settings / Connections. There you can set your own limit and your phone will give you a totice when you're going near. You said you have 15 GB. Set th elimit to 10 or 12, leaving the rest for other use and play freely.

Above may be treated as a general advice for all mobile users - check if your phone has such counters and limiters. Then you wouldn't play in fear of crossing your mobile plans limits.

The thing that can gobble up lots of data ("lots" being relative) is a big friends list.
You should be fine with 15GB, but for anyone on a tight limit, friends are the first thing to cull.

played using a 4G Mifi for years.... as I live on a boat.. with discord open and voice chat there, I use about 50Mb/hr playing the game. Without the Discord/voice, well less than half that. You only need about 2mb/s upload/download for there to be no lag, so even 3G connection is fine. Ping through 4G tends to be better than landline, so no issues with lag.
