Re: Neutron Star Jumping

Best advice. Look it up on YouTube. There are some excellent simple vids telling you everything you need to know.
Basically you can enter the jets of the star, and then jump between 2-3 hundred light years in one go.
I used it to jump to Colonia (22,000ly's)
Took me 88 jumps, and about two and a half hours.

You enter a neutron cone for 10-15sec in order to Supercharge the FSD and a 400% jumprange.

That jumprange boost is the bonus, if done properly only costs ~1% FSD Module damage - hence using it regularly needs an AFMU equipped.

As it needs a Fuel Scooo to work but doesn't refuel the Ship (only boosts jumprange for a single jump), it affords faster travels or allows to reach very distant Systems.

If done improperly, it's extremely dangerous. So checking out a few Videos is indeed highly recommended.

I have just watched a couple of videos and I will try it in a cheap ship.. I've lost my python too many times now with stupid in my brain..

Can someone enlighten me as to tbe Neutron Star Jumping. What Is it? How is it done? Do you need a specific setup? What are the benefits?
How I do it:

  1. Approach the end of the cone at a slow speed (20m/ms or less)
  2. As the ship touches the edge of the cone and message 'FSD...' zero speed
  3. When 'FSD Supercharged' message given full speed ahead
  4. Jump...
White Dwarf stars, approach much faster to be able to escape the cone when you have entered it... (I lost 2 ships to the same WD star in one session when a beginner!)

Always maintained FD should put up a training mission so Newbies can practice without losing their ship.

Having been to Beagle Point a couple of times, neutron jumping becomes second nature. However white dwarves still frighten the bejeebus out of me and I have them switched off in the Nav Map. If by some misfortune you do end up in a WD system, good news I the boost is less than a premium jumponium will give you, so as long as you have the materials you can still get out.

If you do eventually master neutron jumping, don't forget you still need to visit a normal star at frequent intervals to top up your standard hydrogen fuel.

Pretty much same here - aim towards the end of the jet, and enter it as slowly as possible (you get kicked out quite quickly if you enter it at speed).

I avoid white dwarfs these days. The paltry boost isn't worth the hassle.

Oki, just keep in mind small Ships are far more vulnerable to "cone wobble" (uncommanded roll & pitch motions) than i.e. large Ships.
Try to be well below 0.1c when entering a cone in a small Ship, that'll drastically stabilize the short trip inside.

I also avoid White Dwarves.

Is there a reason they are more dangerous than Neutron stars? I would have thought the latter are denser and therefore should have a longer tail effect than WDs, but it's not the case in game.

Search for 'Jackson's Lighthouse' in your GalMap, it's a Neutron Star within the bubble. Take a nice cheap ship and give it a go. It's actually very easy.

After a while you'll be opening up your GalMap and plotting the route to your next NS whilst you're coming out of the cone having boosted. Just make sure you have Orbit lines turned on to see the exclusion zone when you jump into the system and steer clear of it. The YouTube videos will show you what to expect.

Don't forget an AFMU if you do the Highway to Colonia!

Aim towards the end of the jet cone, at least until you're familiar with the process. Keep as far away from the star's exclusion zone as you can (and have orbital lines switched on, so you can see the exclusion zone). Go slow. Sometimes you'll get spat out before it's fully charged, in which case just turn around and go back towards the end again.

It can seem daunting and scary at first, but once you get used to it, it's really nothing.

thanks for this topic and the videos

I may give this a go. I know, I should have already this but I'm slow. I enjoy my boring life in the ED galaxy but I need to expand my horizons and this sounds interesting. I'll definitely start in a low re-buy ship.

Edit: I forgot to ask. Do you have to route plan before you supercharge or can you do it after (GalMap) ? I know the answer is somewhere here but I haven't found it yet and I'm impatient.

The GalMap will let you plot routes using FSD boost, so will search for a route that contains Neutron stars AND White Dwarfs which you can get a smaller boost from but are more dangerous.

Most, or at least a great many, tend to use Spansh which plots a route based on your current jump range from whichever system you want to start from to your final destination. For that it’s best to copy the next system from the website and paste into your GalMap once you’ve boosted your FSD.

I've only used neutron stars a few times to check it out, but yesterday I tried a white dwarf multiple times. It's actually not that difficult or dangerous. Whereas the NS will eat 1% of your FSD a WD seems a little more greedy taking 2% it seems. Apart from that I didn't see much difference except for the lower boost of the jump range. Maybe the WD scare is hyped a little bit? Like the fright of getting caught with illegal cargo making people boost into a station smashing it into a wall or a fellow CMDR to avoid getting a stupid fine?
